Mew, who performed at this year's Roskilde Festival, are brilliant indeed. I would describe their sound as...well, Slowdive meets the Smiths, but that's not really an adequate description. I'd say they are distinguished by their use staccato guitars and Jonas Bjerre's boy choir voice ( and ditto looks). The atmosphere of the music is dreamy and romantic... Their gig at Roskilde was ace. They used to appear very shoegazing, literally meant, but they have altered into a more obliging attitude... The songs from their debut album 'A Triumph For Man' sounded as good as ever with the string and brass treatment they got onstage, especially Panda, She Came Home For Christmas and I Should Have Been A Tsin-Tsi For You. The latter is the closest they've ever been to a nationwide hit. And the new songs from the forthcoming album were even better! The closing Comforting Sounds was everything that a real ballad should be...and a female tap dancer appeared onstage for a tap solo in the middle of the song!!! Only having heard it once, I still remember this song, it was really catchy! I can highly recommend Mew to anyone who likes sweet, melodic and dreamy, but yet melancholic pop tunes... Other great Danish bands at Roskilde were Speaker Bite Me, luksus and Psyched Up Janis...more information is coming up, if anyone is interested... Cheers, Anna (who saw Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine live onstage with Primal Scream and never is going to remove the mascara she wore that day...;)) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 08:01:50 +0200 From: "Barczinski, Reiner, Celanese/DE" Subject: Danish tape-chain update -> Wanna have! Hey! I wonder, why I hear from that danish tape chain for the first time the last days ... has that happened while I seem to've been unsubscribed for a while ?! Well, never mind, if it just would be possible to put me at the end of the chain, too ! So, who's responsible, or who's got the list and wants to put me in it ?! Tak! Reiner ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 00:44:53 PDT From: "PopBox Inc" Subject: Bolgstockfestival '98 I guess I'm a bit early, but though; those of you who happen to be in the mid-norway in august 9th and 10th, should pay a visit to Bolga (Frei) outside Kristiansund - and the Bolgstockfestival. It's a little and local festival - but for sure Scandinavian!!!! And Indie!!!!!!! The lineup so far: Israelvis, Jokke & Tourettes, Cornflakes, Tad Pole, Blew, Phy and further more...... Check out: http://home.sol.no/~sp1002/bolgstock/ for information. It seems to be mostly swedes in this list for the time being, and I can registrate that neither we Norwegians nor the Danish get ONE SINGLE ANSWER when it comes to the football world cup in France.....guess why???? Well, I'm really happy about the Danish heroic win last night over Nigeria - and I for sure hope they kicks the Brazilian out of the cup!! Besides; that would've been really cool......the World Cup Master of all times, Brazil, have to leave France without anything.....two losses in a few days, both from Scandinavian teams!!! That is Scandinavian Indie for sure!!!! Regards PopBox PopBox Inc. I'm also interested and would like to be added to the list if possible. Also I would like to know something about these tape chains. These tapes contains indiebands from the country where the tape came from (ie. danish bands in this tape) and is there any restrictions about the appearing bands. I mean are they all unsigned, unreleased bands or are they established bands? And is there some musical direction which the bands must perform. As we all know indie is quite a large scene. Subject: stubnitz etc. Just got back from Roskilde by way of sweden, and must now correct my view of sweden. while raiding record stores i briefed myself with the case of Stubnitz, and must say your authorities are just as fucking degenerated idiots as ours. it's a complete farce! i hope the "rave-comission" gets a really bad collective constipation and explodes in a messy kaboom... On happier note, i'm quite jelous about all the record stores in stockholm. Freak Scene was a ball what with the bad service and thorough garage collection. also a few great used stores at or near St. Ericksgatan... there was this store absolutely jammed with records that were totally impossible to wade through because of the way they were piled, but i still found a few cheap Amon Duul II LPs criminally cheap, and ran out of bad luck and found Devo's New Traditionalists LP with one of my anthems "beautiful world" timo. ps. I compiled one in early 1996 or so (I think?)...maybe it was the first chain tape on this list... And there was another tape compiled by Mr. Riitamaa, if memory serves. As some of you may remember, I did compile a CD with Finnish indie bands, but due to poor packaging on my behalf, the disc was damaged on its way to the US, and never made very far before turning into a piece of waste. The compilations I did featured both established (like 22-Pistepirkko) and unsigned (All Stars, Dada Girl) bands. Maybe I should add that I never got the first tape back, and the same happened to the chain tape with music released by the great Spanish pop labels Siesta and Elefant, which shouldn't be interpreted as discouraging anybody who wants to spend a few hours on compiling a chain tape of their own :) Kimmo kimmo saaskilahti * solaris@sci.fi * http://www.sci.fi/~solaris/ aleksis kiven katu 30 a 14 * 33200 tampere * finland ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Jul 1998 08:50:30 +0200 From: Mats Larsson Subject: Re: stubnitz etc. timo riitamaa. wrote: > Devo's New Traditionalists LP with one of my anthems "beautiful world" Did you find a copy with the Subgenious poster?
