Do not miss TaMtAM Club. It's not so close to the centre,
but it's a cool place an ocupied youthclub, with shows every
day... There is a vibrant scene
If you want adresses I could give them to you, because my band
Samhallets Botten (Bottom Of Society) played in FishFabrique,
Gora and Tam-Tam about two years ago....
I'm a bit jealous of you, going there...I'd like to return to....

Hang on folks, here we go again. The gig season at Herrgarn has re-started.
Malte Holmberg and his pals in MAZARINE STREET made a big success the last
time they played here, about 1.5 years ago. So it was a quite big crowd
this night and I think most of them were satisfied. I had heard rumours
that the latest album is more melodic than the first one but live we still
get funky, groovy, dirty and blues spiced rock n roll a la JOHN SPENCER
BLUES EXPLOSION. Perhaps not the kind of music *I* prefer to listen to in
my stereo, but live it works fine. And I think it was a good move to make
that "diverse sounds" guy a member of the band - his saxophones,
tambourines, sound samples, scratching etc. etc. adds another dimension to
the rough music. But I do not quite understand why they bring their
keyboards player when they play live, *I* never heard him through the
massive guitar walls. But that is the only piece of criticism I can come up
with. To sum up: this concert was an orgy in loudness, distortion, weird
sound effects and groove. And it was a quite entertaining orgy, IMO.

...nah, not a new exciting death-metal/powerpop crossover act from the
Kola Peninsula, just news that I shelled out on a new hifi system
(remote control! the works!) last week, and was finally able to start
ringing my friends and get them to return my generously-loaned CD
collection. My CD player having been dead since the summer. You can
imagine that I've been listening to a lot of P3 since then.
First on the turntable was a lot of bob hund actually, 'Ett fall och
en losning' of course, but also a lot of the last album. They are
still so good it's frightening. Just when I thought I was going to be
mature and get into Stephen Simmonds. Hey, well maybe next year.
Finally I got to listen to the small but perfectly formed Cessna CDs
known as 'Bordeaux'. Good stuff! Some of it familiar from my
photography sess... er I mean the International Pop Underground gig last
summer, makes me wonder what Cessna are up to now (Kimmo?), how well
Bordeaux sold (Alexander?) and how Finland's furriest drummer is
getting on in Helsinki ;-)
To inaugurate the CD player I impulse-bought a whole bunch of stuff.
Wes' 'Alane', Stephen Simmonds 'Tears never dry' (hey, I'm allowed to
like soul music too!), Chumbawamba's 'Tub-thumping' and what turned
out to be the best buy of the lot, the Bear Quartet's brilliant 'Moby
Dick'. Next question is: how good is the new Mopeds' album? Anybody
know?
Astute readers will realise that I must have got a job if I've been
spending all that money, and indeed this is true, in very same
building that scan-indie's very own Marten Sahlen cut his teeth.

Thanks! Um, not well enough for me not to remind everyone that if they
want to support my upcoming trip to Scandinavia (March/April, or so) in
ways besides putting me up, they can still buy the Cessna album direct from
Radio Khartoum for the nice price of US $11, or 90 SEK, including airmail
to anywhere in the world. E-mail me directly for our US and Swedish
mailing addresses.
Now that I've gone and spammed the list, I guess I might as well make my
announcement. I'm quitting my job this month, and before I sign away my
freedom to the next employer, I'm going to be taking a nice, well earned
vacation. Visiting friends in Finland, Sweden, Estonia, France & Germany.
For most of March and April. I wish I could come in Summer, but I've got
to take my freedom when I can find it. Anyone who would care to meet with

OK; so all the BQ fans says this is their best album. The only one i
have so far is Holy Holy which i found to be a bit dull, compared to
the emotional live show.
How do these albums compare?!

I think HEDNINGARNA is considered more "ok" than NORDMAN ;). At least they
are much closer to the "real" tradition of folk music - not as much
"plastic content" in their music. I have only heard the "Kaksi" and "Tra"
albums and the latter one is, Imo, the best of those. If you want something
similar you should check out GARMARNA. They are much younger than the guys
in HEDNINGARNA but they play music in the same tradition - somewhat
modernized Nordic folk music. Actually, I think you can hear soundclips by
GARMARNA on the internet. If you glance through the scan indie digest
archive on the Scan Indie web pages I think you will find some links in one
of Erik Soderstroms "Weekly news" messages (posted late 1997/very early
1998, I think). Or if someone else could post those URLs once again?

Not much really; there's a three-track 7" coming out on Fantastic Records
(another US label) as well as a couple of compilation apperances here and
there. We played our fourth gig last Thursday with an awesome local band
Kevin. Maybe we'll go and record some new tracks sometime in the spring,
but we'll see...

Maybe it's just me, but I was slightly disappointed with "Moby Dick" as it
was somehow too "rock" for me... Their sound became a little harder and
colder on this album, maybe because it wasn't done with Kjell Nasten?
Anyway, I find the warmth of the earlier albums more attractive. And I
liked Urban Nordh's style of drumming better...
As far as "Holy Holy" is concerned, there's one classic track ("Tibet") but
otherwise I agree that it is a bit dull. In my opinion their best album by
far is "Everybody Else" with "Family Affair" as close second. The music on
"Everybody Else" is beautiful and melancholy.

Gbg is known to have the cheapest CD's in sweden, so you should take
the chance. I'm only there once a year or so, I'm not the right person
to guide you.
CD-specialisten (the shop formerly known as Rock House) Bengans,
Skivhugget are some of the biggest in the business. Maybe someone else
can give a description on where and how?!
The opening hours on sat are normally 10-14, maybe one or two hours
more if it's a big shop.

Haven't heard much stuff by Hedningarna, but in case you're interested in
indigenous Lappish folk music with some contemporary elements, check out
the three albums by Annel Nieiddat (also known as Angelin tytot here in
Finland). Two first albums "Dolla" and "Giitu" are more traditional and
folky, while the third, "Skeaikit", has got some more "danceable" drum
loops and is otherwise slightly more "experimental". Maybe they have a
fourth album out already...?

Hey C'mon you swedes! somebody sacrifice yourself to the altar of
rock'n'roll and email Rainer that you'll buy all the recorded Bob Hund he
wants as soon as he sends the money to you... i'd do it but i think CDs are
a bit cheaper in sverige-land.
This is how i buy virtually everything foreign i listen to.
We're all brothers in rock'n'roll... and sisters too.

#2 The grand tour:
Take the tram to Stigbergstorget and enter Bengans. Walk down to
Masthuggstorget and visit Skivhugget. Then walk along Andra Langgatan
and visit Andra Langgatans Skivhandel. Continue until you reach
Jarntorget. Follow Landsvagsgatan to the right at the other side of
Jarntorget. Continue until you reach Lilla Risasgatan and enter
Lime-Light. Walk back along Landsvagsgatan until you reach
Haga Nygata. Visit Satisfaction, then continue until you reach
Sprangkullsgatan. Cross it and continue on Vasagatan. When you reach
Nedre Fogelbergsgatan walk a few meter along it and enter
Vinylkjellarn. Get back to Vasagatan and continue until you reach
Chalmersgatan. There you will find Dirty Records. Now you can prepare
to live on bread and water for the rest of the month.

For record mailorder companies, I suggest you take a look at the
Scandinavian Indie website's "Links Links" page. The address is:

Under "mailorder companies" you'll find a list of the ones I know
of who are on the net - and from there you'll probably be able to
