Do anyone know if Radiohead is comming to Sweden? /Daniel ----------------------------- Date: Sat, 12 Jul 1997 11:52:25 +0100 From: Erik Soderstrom Subject: Re: Fidget on da radio in da weekend > SR bjuder upp till dans: [snip] And here's the translation: Swedish National Radio asks you to dance: ---- Flipper: Summer chat with Nina Natri and Louise Weibull from the pop group Fidget Swedish National Radio - channel P3 on saturday July 12th, at 17.05 (also broadcasted on sunday at 22.10) Flipper continues with their own summer hosts and hostesses during the show's second hour (after the 6 o'clock news). On July 12th, Nina Natro and Louise Weibull are behind the wheel. They both play in the pop group Fidget who has been (and still are) our favourites for a long time. ---- //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jul 1997 23:52:58 +0100 From: totte.pop@swipnet.se (Totte Pop) Subject: Re: OASIS in Sthlm >Hi! >Do anyone know if the Verve will open for Oasis in Sthlm this autumn gig? >Do anyone know if Radiohead is comming to Sweden? > >/Daniel I'll let you know after the show! So I come back from my journey to the homeland and what do I find? Lots of messages apparently in reply to the one I posted asking for suggestions of swedish music. Though it was a let down to find out it was all the same message by the same guy, I'd like to just thank everyone who DID give me their suggestions before I left. Special tip of the hat goes to Michael Rehnstrom for pointing me in the direction of Liberator and the Dorian records comp "A chance to shine". Besides giving me a chance to finally hear more than 15 second .wav files from Aquadays (who, imho are completely brilliant, at least based on "June") it gave me a chance to really hear how much good indiepop there is in sweden. I played the CD for my girlfriend (a non-Swede) and she was duly impressed by the ammount of talent a country that small seems to have for writing great pop songs. God I feel a surge of nationalism coming on (though from what I gather that's a bad thing in sweden nowadays...). I was a little bit dissapointed by Fidget though, who seemed to have a lot of potential but whose songs just somehow didn't click. I convinced my sister to buy their CD so I could listen to it for free : ). Other major discovery while I was there (courtesy of a very helpfull employee at Musikorat in Uppsala) was Loosegoats whose Sebadoh-circa-bakesale-with-their-own-unique-thing-going-on-ness was a happy surprise. I'm having serious problems keeping myself from playing their CD "for sale by owner". Just brillyunt... One last ramble: on the punk side of things, the new Randy CD "The rest is silence..." is one of the most amazingly well-crafted punk records I've heard from any country. The tunes are melodic as hell, full of great dynamic and tempo changes and have a bad tendency to get stuck in your head. The lyrics are very political but in a way that can laugh at it self (as opposed to like, earth crisis). Not to mention which, there's a cover of Lita Fords "Kiss me deadly" which has to be heard... One of the best punk albums of the year, easily... So that's about that for my unsolicited opinions. I'd love to hear any one else's opinion on any of these bands. So thanks again for the help and, um, yeah. -Martin Kicking back with a Herrgards Ost sandwhich made with cheese smuggled into the country... ----------------------------- Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 17:53:56 +0200 From: Michael Rehnstrom Subject: Re: Going to Sweden and coming back... Nice to hear I was pointing in the right direction. You shouldn't always trust me when pointing out directions, I am known to enter the wrong apartments and sometimes even the wrong buildings when I am about to visit people ;-) > employee at Musikorat in Uppsala) was Loosegoats whose > Sebadoh-circa-bakesale-with-their-own-unique-thing-going-on-ness was a > happy surprise. I'm having serious problems keeping myself from playing > their CD "for sale by owner". Just brillyunt... I haven't listened to the album yet but the songs I have heard with them are very good (in my very humble opinion, of course). Finally a swedish "copy" which is better than most of the foreign "originals". Their ep "Country crock" was one of the best swedish records last year, if you ask me. I do not know whether it is true but I have heard rumours that one of the members of Archers Of Loaf wore a Loosegoats T-shirt when AOL toured in Sweden recently. /Micke, just back after a few days in the town/city with the highest number of restaurants/bars/pubs, per capita, in Sweden: Vastervik ----------------------------- Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 18:11:56 +0200 From: Michael Rehnstrom Subject: Doris Days I also feel a strong need to tell you about the four-track (two songs, two versions each) CD "Quiet withdrawal" from Stockholm-based band Doris Days. The reason is that this is one of the best swedish singles I have heard for a very long time. The title track, especially, is great. A half-acoustic guitar sound mixed with a cool trip-hop rhythm and a beautiful, female, voice. This is cooler than ever Portishead, even cooler than Massive Attack (the previous five words are some of the strongest I could come up with). The second song "To Ulrike M" is softer, even more suggestive, and without guitars. It doesn't reach the same heights as "Quiet withdrawal" but passes the "OK" limit without any problems. As I said, a brilliant CD-single. Just put it in the stereo, close your eyes and float away with the rhythm. Is there anyone who has listened to their debut album "Live in Poland". If it is as good, as this single, I should have a discussion with my accountant on whether I should make an investment. /Micke, floating in space ------------------------------- Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 11:41:32 -0400 From: Blue Studio Productions Subject: selling equipment Hi! There are songs on the album that blows even "Quiet Withdrawal" away, and that says a lot. Hopefully we'll see another great band from Estonia, who are in this field, releasing something here in Sweden soon as well. And if you like Doris Days, you're going to *love* them. (and as usual: more in the upcoming Selected News..) But until then, Doris Days gets my highest personal recommendations. P.S. Any luck contacting Coach Bob by the way? - You're welcome. Fireside........! totte.pop@swipnet.se (Totte Pop) -------------------------------- Date: Sat, 19 Jul 1997 19:07:06 +0200 From: Michael Rehnstrom Subject: Koop review Another splendid, swedish, CD-single I feel I have to tell you about. It is bands like Koop that make the art of making music really interesting to follow during the 1990s. Two guys, living in Uppsala, with a complete lack of respect for all these borders, created by narrow-minded people, between musical styles. Before I heard Koop people told me that they played techno. And Their single "Glomd" (="Forgotten"), released on label Superstudio Gra, is techno. And it is jazz. And folk music. And classical music. And poetry. And totally amazing... Both tracks - "Glomd" and "Jellyfishes" are very dreamish and suggestive. The title track contains techno beats mixed with samples from a symphony by Kalevi Aho and extracts from the poem "Glomd ar skogens gud" by Rut Hillarp. It is beautiful and it sounds very "nordic" (no, there are no samples with idiots shouting "Heil Hitler" and waving with swedish flags. But the samples they use - the classical music and the poem - makes you think of ancient tales about elves, spirits and other mystical phenomenons in the deep green forests up north. Hedningarna and Garmarna are the only bands I can come up with, whose music can create the same feeling, but these bands don't sound like Koop). "Jellyfishes" starts like a soft jazz ballad with vocalist Cecilia Stalin (not a member of Koop) taking a walk on a beach, the waves of the sea are heard in the background, accompanied by an accordion and a contrabass. After a while she finds a drum machine and a symphony orchestra (!) on the beach and decides to stay with them for a while. Poetic, isn't it :-)? And the music is poetic and beautiful - for ladies and gentlemen who _really_ wants to float in space. I wrap this up by asking if anyone has listened to their album "Sons of Koop" and if it is as good as I think it is (my wallet cries at the very thought) and if anyone has seen the video to "Glomd" - it is directed by noone else but Stina Nordenstam, I hear? /Micke, who sends appreciation to another Micke (you know who you are and why you get it :-) ------------------------------- Date: Tue, 22 Jul 1997 18:43:34 +0100 From: Michael Rehnstrom Subject: lollipop schedule There is now a complete schedule (artists, when and where they will perform)for the lollipop festival at: http://www.lollipop.se/start1997.html /Micke, still waiting for that knocking on his door ---------------------------- End of SIN Digest #4.29 ***********************
