To the fans of "Super Eight Group"
a 7" single with them has just been released (on Dolores)
Tracks are:
a1: Lady of the sun
a2: People get ready
b1: Mister Man
b2: Let it shine on you

I'm not a great fan of this type of music, but I must say it's a good
single, all 4 track are great pop songs, along the same lines as ocene
colour scene/beatles etc. I think it would sell loads if if was giving
a helping hand, but I must say I think dolores has spent as little
money as possible on this record, it a losy cover, black print on
orange paper. Nothing printed on the record, so you don't know which
side is which, until you hear the music.

It's on white vinyl which is nice but when playing the record, it looks
like its been stored next to a radiator all winter! (a windy day a sea).
Also it seems to only pressed in 250 limited edition copies,
so lets hope that if this band release a LP/CD  that these tracks are on
it, it would be a shame otherwise.

Has anybody else heard this record? what did you think.

Yup, and a hint of Kate Bush, with a caracteristical vibrato... Mmm,

I recall them playing an unreleased song at GIno, must have been
december 95. It was titled "I don't want to be alone", great emotional
stuff. Is it on the new album?!

Umm, M3 is not really the reference i would drop. OK, it's lighter but
not _that_ light. Nina still have some belly behind her voice. 
The mood was melancholic, but not mellow. Nina was powerful, had more
confidence, was open and the natural centre of the stage, now that
there was no bass player at the front.

Three days have passed, i'm feeling sort of normal-ish again - i've
even begun to put my records back in their sleeves after all the wild
dj-ing and since someone wondered i'll give you all an inside view of
what went down in Stockholm this past friday.

It all started out in a mild and rather swooning fashion, Christer
dj-ing for the first time and spinning Sukpatch and Madison Electric
in the still rather sunshiny stockholm night. And at about 9 PM the
very humble and honorable Chris Suretoss entered the stage and started
to rock the house - great originals (one with a very interesting
tunage on the guitar) and a couple of cool covers (mountain goats song
and the razorcuts). Fifteen thrilling minutes later it was all over
and John-=D8 was at turntables blasting "Your New Boyfriend" by
Rocketship while smiling madly. Popkids were bopping along, Chris
Suretoss was surrounded by newfound fans and Cessna were - putting it
mildly - getting a bit nervous.- It was after all their very first
show.

But they took the stage by storm, dodging strange microphones and
wobbling drumkits, they overcame all their fears and the crowd was
starting to get it on. Smiles were everywhere and when the mike realy
started to work properly there was no stopping them. Guitars jangled
and it all ended in a furious - in a very twee sort of way - cresendo.
YAY!!! PURE  POP HITS!!!

By this time the crowd was realy getting crowded and to sold out sign
was almost waved - but we just keep packing them in. The POP
festivities had just begun. Stefan was wildly spinning the Teen
Anthems and everyone was grooving along to "Hideaway" by Comet Gain.
And The Red Sleeping Beauty EXPERIENCE was just a few minutes away.
Only problem was Kristinas stagefright was getting bad. But I think
Gunnar of the Grand International sort of broke the ice when he
*threw* himself out the door and landed smilingly on the pavement
outside - Kristina was back to her old self and when they all piled on
stage (well the floor in the corner of the room) they were the
ACTION!!! Horns punched the air, Callis basslines grooving close to
the Northern Soul he was raised on and the POP was EVERYWHERE. Even
outside where I had too watch the door to keep all the popkids who
wanted to crashpop 'til tomorrow. Kristina told me on Saturday that
she just couldn't believe the atmosphere - just pure smiles - and
she's gonna get into mountainclimbing so she can be as cool as the
Teddybears Sthlm next time they perform - and they will soon, no doubt
about it.

Their set left moisture dripping off the roof and the bopping just
wouldn't stop when Per - who looks just like a miniature Ed of the
Chemical Brothers - spun Tiger Trap and The Crabs and The Pastels 
and... There was no tomorrow! The Grand International outdressed the
crowd and it looked like the audience was near bliss from my point
view - behind a very flamboyant - but flimsy - sixties drumkit.
Everyone was on their feet. Spilling beverages on each other without
getting mad and hating other bands - i bet they even sold records that
way.

BY this time it was way past twelve and The Lambrettas and The Vertex
were getting their five fame filled minutes on the turntables and They
Go Boom!! and eventually even the Milky Way flexi - Small Factorys
great "Giant Merry Go Round" paving the way for Papas Fritas "Kids
Don't Mind" and McCarthy - Stereolab - the genius of Komeda -
Eggstone. At about three in the morning things finally were cooling
down and it all ended with Per fading out with the Field Mice classic
"When Morning Comes To Town".

It was a start of an era. The INTERNATIONAL POP UNDERGROUND had found
it's way to Stockholm and lodged deep in our hearts we knew that we
were all a part of something special.

Subject: Bear Quartet

Well, time for a short review. I went to see Bear Quartet at Bottleneck
Sthlm, yesterday, and my ears are still ringing.

Apart from being a loud concert it was fun. I showed Matti and the boys
my photos from last time i saw them (Tre Backar june 1993), and they
were quite amused. Matti looks strange, cause he has his eyes closed
on every picture. Last night too, he has a way of headbanging with
his eyes closed and tongue out that looks outright stupid. In a way
they are perfect anti-rockstars. Jari looks like he's been shrunk,
like a schoolkid jumping up and down, a miniature man.

I must say i don't have much BQ on record, so i didn't recognize many
songs. Mattis mumbling/humming didn't make it easier...
One song was like:
hmmm hmmm
hoo hoo
gone gone
nn nn nn

Ok, you get the point. The guys next to me in the audience were real
bear-heads, they digged every note, in a free flowing jazzy way.
This is maybe old news, but their new (?) drummer is from helsingborg,
and was LOUD. You wouldn't believe that they fit together, coming from
opposite parts of sweden, but the drums hushes the rest of the
musicians from getting too lazy.

The final track was "Did you have a heart?", great prolonged version
with Matti freaking out on the guitar with a drum stick, wailing like
crazy, Jari sitting on the floor abusing his guitar for minutes...

Good stuff, all in all. Made you happy to see all this "spelgladje".

Nope, not yet. It was planned to be released at the Hultsfred Festival
the last I heard, but things have changed since. I'll include a full
update on the whole thing in the upcoming Selected News (as soon as
I find the time to put it all together!). But for now - nope, it's
not out yet.

Chris,

In this Wellmeant thread, the poor girl has been compared to
Alison (Cranes), Belinda Carlisle(Go Go's), Susanna Hoffs(Bangles), Kate
Bush and Harriet Wheeler. The only thing I want to say is can't we be
satisfied with that and just say that the girl has a beautiful and
personal voice? It's obvious that the girl sounds special since you can
make so many different comparisions.

And..
If she would sound exactly like Harriet, with a band sounding like
Status quo, how fun would it be then? The vocals is only one thing of
many components in a band.

To answer your initial question, yes she sounds a little little bit like
Harriet Wheeler but the music doesn't sound like the Sundays at all. So
if you love Harriet, you could hate The Wellmeant anyway.

ob.scan: L.A.M.F. needs a guitarist! this is really funny. they seem to be
desparate, and everybody's having a fun time saying no. they can't even get
a session guy to play 6-string when they're supposed to go to the studio any
day now. maybe they should be nice to people for a change...

Why "poor girl"? If those who like Alison, Carlisle, Hoffs, Bush and
Wheeler takes time to listen to The Wellmeant it cannot be bad for the
band. See, we have already managed to make Chris interested without saying
more than that her _voice_ (not the music) sounds like those people
mentioned above. I don´t agree that it would be sufficient to just say that
she has a "personal and beatiful voice", some people would probably say
that about Tom Waits' voice too. All this "name-dropping" was just intended
as a service to all those who hasn't heard the band.

OK, I agree on that. So, perhaps we should try to do the same kind of
comparisons about the music then. But I leave that practice to someone
else, I think. About your question: I think it would sound fun if the band
sounded like Status Quo. Not especially good, though :-).

yes, it's a shame. Hopefully there'll be a festival next year though.

Some people who were planning to go to Trastock might like to know about a
small-ish Finnish festival taking place in Pietarsaari (Jakobstad) which is
on the Finnish side of the sea - you can even take a ferry there from
Skelleftea! The festival is called "Hotter Than July '97" at as you can
imagine it will happen in July, on the 18th and 19th to be more exact.

You'll get to experience the best of Finnish pop with some cool Swedish acts
to boot: the Friday's line-up features Pansies (who recently released their
third album "Feel Easy"), Lemonator (a great energetic live band), Speaker
(from Sweden) and Tracey (an upcoming club act a la Massive Attack/Portishead).

Saturday's bands are Popsicle (!!!), Heed (also from Sweden - could anybody
give some info on them?), Superswirls (Sweden again) and Super (whose debut
album "Rendezvous with Super" should be spinning in every popkid's cd player
right now).

The tickets are 60 and 80 FIM for Friday and Saturday respectively.

Super will also be playing on a couple of Northern Finnish festivals later
in the summer: Suviyon sumutus in Suomussalmi at August 1st (other bands
that night are Lemonator, Thee Ultra Bimboos and Zen Cafe) and Down By The
Kemijoki in Rovaniemi (not to be confused with Down by the Laituri in Turku
:) on August 2nd, I believe.

Boo Hoo! Now I am really regreting being on the wrong side of the water. 
Any hipsters listen to this new album by the wonderful Pansies yet? I 
haven't been fourtunate enough to hear it. Any reviews will be greatly 
appreciated. Is the album anything like the quite fanciful, "fancy"?

you asked about Heed. I saw them at POpStad 97 in Umeå and they were
nowhere near pop. or rock 'n roll either. 
A man raps or whatever :-) and a woman sing in a beautiful high voice.
They are on NONS or rather an sublabel to it. At least I think so.
I think they were on Z-tv's "Toppen" for a few weeks ago, but i don't
know if they made it into the charts.

Yeah, I often feel the same way and sometimes it's especially painfull when
you find yourself in the spot of trying to convince people that they really
aren't just a gimick, out-of-nowhere band but rather a generally talented
bunch of people (the last album being an exception, IMHO) who've spent
their time doing the "relatively unknown indie-band" thing.  People here in
the states, especially in indie circles tend to have a pretty generally low
opinion of them as a band.  Witness the following bit someone wrote on the
american indie-pop list at eskimo.com:

        So okay, most of the music discussed on here is of the indie-pop or
indie-rock variety, but hey, lots of scandinavian punk and ska bands are
indie too so I'm just kind of curious if anyone else here is into any of
these?
        The few I've been able to get a hold of an have enjoyed are Randy
(great NOFXesque, very political punk), Millencollin (again NOFXesque but
with a twinge of ska-core and a much more lighthearted approach), Refused
(EXTREMELY angry hardcore), De Lyckliga Kompisarna (unfortunately broken up
pop-punk band which sang in swedish about stuff like pinball and vacuum
cleaners), Girlsmen (Very unique 2tone style ska with 1st wave samples and
a guy spinning disks.  I've heard these guys have dropped the ska from
their sound though, is this true?), and Chickenpox (fair to middlin' ska.
nothing extrordinary).
        I'm just kindof curious if anyone else here is into any of these
genres and if they have any recomendations of other bands maybe I should
check out if given a chance.

Fireside (mega-nice pop-hardcore) on Startrec (http://www.cabal.se/startrec/)
is a band you definitely should check out, esp. their latest album "Do Not
Tailgate".

Adhesive (skate-punk), Sober (punk-pop-hardcore) Abhinanda (sXe hardcore)

First if you don't mind I will change "Punk & Ska" to Alternative, so I can
name a few more bands that land somewhere in between (ie Garage rock)
there are quite a few good labels, bands, magazines coming out of scandinavia,
heres a few that I can name & have probally been named here on the
scan-indie before:

The Grinners, from the north of sweden, as far as I now have only released
one single but it's a great single, called Break her arm, it's fast and
heavy a cross between motorhead meets bad brains I guess (Sweden)

The Nomads, I would guess that they are known world wide, the Garage kings
of Sweden, have released two singles this year, the best being on Estrus
records called Pack of Lies, they have been around for 15 years or so. Do a
lot of covers, and are well worth checking out. (Sweden)

The Vikings, now the vikings are from Norway the land of Death Metal, But
the vikings are a long way from death metal, more rock n roll, in fact pure
punky rock n roll, band member S.Baise has played with the Devil dogs.
(Norway)

again from Norway there is Schweinhund, I don't know much about this band
having only heard one single "Bastard"  (which will be on the tape I'm
putting together "juicy II) they are very heavy but not to the unbearable.

a new band that is just releaseing there first single is "The Whitbred
Blues Experience" the first single is called "Get out" and is very lo-fi
recorded on a 4-track in mono, they are in the same style as
Oblivians,ripoffs, jon spencer,Trouble Bound Gospel
it's been released on a new swedish label called Sorrento Audiofication,
which have a few nices surprices for us later this year, like a album with
the 1-4-5,s!!!
back to the band "The Whitbred Blues Experience" they also a have more
stuff being released later this year, another single and then a album, I
think. (Sweden)

The Hellacopters getting bigger all the time, rock n roll trying to sound
like Electric Frankenstein....
must be making lots of money at the moment! playing all the festivals and

The new Pansies album -Feel Easy is definetly their best album yet. It's
a bit more "rougher" and "darker"  sounding then the last one, but I
think their new sound suites them better.

Unfortunetly the critics here in Finland haven't been quite as pleased
with the new album as I am.

Hi Indiepoppers,

Bent Spanner, Arty Banner is playing at 'Skylten' in Linkoping this
Saturday (7/6). Two other local bands are playing too. Popeye and
Allgone. I'm not sure that I spelled their names right :)

It's the only time this summer except for Emmaboda (thanks Fant!) that
wer're playing live. We are busy recording our full-lenght album that is
going to be released approx. around Aug/Sept.

If you're in Malmo on friday check out 1st Floor Power at KB. Their
first gig ever, but they are really good. Jenny sings and plays guitar.
She hates me saying that she sounds a little bit like PJ Harvey, but she
does. The music is a weird hard poprockmusic. Maybe a little
devo/pixies/PJ Harvey sounding.... On keyboards there is Karl-Jonas,
drummer from ex. Chevy and Petra from Sobsister has jumped in on the drums.

They are opening for Red Kross, if anyone cares. I don't.

I heard that Linkopings second best band (after CBJ) The Pusjkins are
opening for Redd Kross in Stockholm this weekend. They are also playing at
a festival in Hagersten on Saturday (without RK, of course). When they
supported The Posies last year (in Linkoping) Ken and the other guys were
so impressed by Pusjkins' Posies/J Mascis/PJ Harvey kind of pop that they
asked the girls to support them in Gothenburg too (which they,
unfortunately, weren't able to do). Recommended!

/Micke, getting slightly tired of all these pop/rock heroes of mine dying
all the time. Rest In Peace, Jeff Buckley (unless it wasn't just a very
long distance to swim, of course)!

Subject: Bad Cash gig

The Bad Cash Quartet ended the season at Herrgarn yesterday night. Perhaps
it would have helped if I had been a Pavement fan. On the other hand -
there must have been some Pavement fans in the audience but noone seemed to
bother. So, as you migth have guessed, the music was very lo-fi with the
same aversion as Pavement against melodies built up in a normal way. Not
lousy, could become something in the future (these guys are _young_) but
there are only three things I will remember from last night: 1) one song,
don't know the name (it was no 4 in the playlist) ending with a beautiful
meeting between roaring guitars and a keyboard 2) one of the lousiest
singers I have ever heard and 3) a drummer that must have eaten two kilos
of concentrated coffee before the gig, whenever I was beginning to feel
bored I only had to watch him in action to cheer up again.

/Micke, singing along in Teddybears Sthlm's version of "The robots" at the
university tonight (Teddybears Sthlm, Fireside and Electric Banana Band
(!!?) playing at the university, starting at about nine o'clock. Hurry up!)

Subject: Teddybears + Fireside review

I like the idea behind the annual event "Sommar-X". Linkopings students end
a year filled with hard studies (for some, at least) by coming together and
listening to a couple of the best swedish bands at the moment. Could be
quite nice if it wasn't for two things. 1. Many of those people who pay
money to attend this event are more interested in the party, the low beer
prices and the disco than they are in the bands playing. 2. The organizers
show a significant lack of respect for the bands, last year Starmarket were
told to keep their soundcheck quiet because there was a lottery draw taking
place at the moment and last night Fireside had to make a shorter gig than
normal. The reason: the firework display following after the concert had to
end before midnight!

Now to the concerts. At 9.30 Teddybears Sthlm entered the stage. I was
worried that this "institution" in swedish hardcore-punk music would not be
able to engage the audience. Indifferent spectators, daylight, sun, heat -
not the best conditions. I didn't have to worry. Patrik Arve and the Ahlund
brothers are showmen just as much as they are musicians. You really have to
be clever to fool an audience outside Stockholm to shout "AIK" (Stockholm
sports team, utterly detested outside Stockholm). This was certainly one of
the better gigs I have seen, so far, this year. Highlights were the single
release "Magic Finger" and the killer cover versions of "Purple rain" and
"The robots". It is hard for an old synth freak like me to admit this but
last night the hardcore version of "The robots" were better than Kraftwerks
original version.

At 11 o'clock the darkness fell over Linkoping and Fireside appeared on
stage. Fireside on stage is more rock n'roll and less emo-core than they
are on record. Good, tight performance with a superb sound quality. Still,
it was quite obvious that they are not the same authority on stage as
Teddybears are. Another minor disappointment was that they played much new
material, not so much from the "Do not tailgate" album. Nothing wrong with
playing new material but the audience (on its legs by now) wanted to hear
"Kilotin" and "Left rustle" instead. Some of the new songs sounded more
melodic, more "pop", than their earlier material but some other songs
sounded just like the good old Fireside. Some disappointment that no extra
numbers were played. Anyways, this was a pleasant evening at Karallen and
well done by the "Rock The Nation" crew to get these two bands to play here.

Gig review: Shallow Soundwave at Studion (Bottleneck)

I've heard one SS song on the swedish indie list tape, and had read a
review in Release (swedish synth fanzine), so i expected something
sweet, slowdivish, ethereal.
When the curtains opened I WAS SHOCKED!
They looked like nothing i'd ever imagine. Annica Silvonen (sp?) was
the perfect femme fatale, dressed in a black neglige, high heeled, pale
white skin, _black_ lipstick and _black_ nailpolish. What a vampire!
Got some photos coming your way. ;-)

The rest of the band was a stunner. They looked like f***ing New York
Dolls. No synthesisers, no more mr nice guy. These boys were filthy!
One wore a south state flag body shirt, one a black polo with dog
collars, ammo belts, "nitbälten", the full punk outfit, the drummer in
camouflage green. Heck, it was like indie had never happened!
Maybe the sleaze trend is coming back with Hellacopters and Backstreet
Boys, but i couldn't dream up a combination like this.

So what about the music? They started of by that song from swed-indie
tape "Forever" (?). Beautiful, much harder live than on tape. Then on
to the rest, music-wise it was much like Curve, processed, reverbed
guitars, swirling -  but dark, dramatic  - more Cuckoo than
Doppelganger.

The vocals, if you haven't heard her it's hard to describe. Very high,
not like Curve, more Siouxie and The Banshees, with a touch of
falsetto, opera style. Maybe a bit like the old punk queen Nina Hagen?!
;-)
I haven't heard Diamanda Galas, but i can imagine it's similar to
Annicas voice.

When she didn't sing she really put off a show. The bass hammering on
violently, she just slowly looked out over the audience, icy cold,
seductive, chilling! Off course it was theatre, but the image was
perfect.

Like Curve, you could try to call this gothic, or "svartrock". I don't
care. But the combination of these white noise guitars, monotonous
killer bass and Annicas demonic voice is unique.

Too sad there were only like 30 persons at studion, since everybody
else were at student parties, a bad choice to play on a friday like
this. 

Too sad also that SS only played 25 minutes. Love to see them again. I
think I got addicted.

I signed up for the job of creating web pagest for them some time ago,
and I have loads of info and a couple of pictures, promotional as well

Kudos to Roberts for getting it together, anyway, I liked it on first
hearing.  That bunch called Jauns something, they were good.  There
seemed to be a lot of strong male voices, something which I get the
impression is less common in indie circles than it was in the mid-80s.
Not all of it works, but a lot of it is pretty good fun.

Ouch! we were in St.Petersburg at the Gora club, (wich btw. has a toilet
thats (and i swear i'm not exaggarating) three times worse than the one in
Trainspotting (and don't even let me start about the toilet at Fish
Fabrique)... but anyway, i'm not usually into ska except Dva Samaljota (if
you can call it ska) but there was a band called Spitfire as warm-up, and
they were incredibly tight and rocking. + they had really good songs. do we
have anybody here from those parts of the planet?

Subject: Spin College Radio

Just in case no one has noticed, Spin College Radio have all their
shows available on the web in Real Audio (ISDN and 28.8kbps)
format. Loads of great stuff, including interviews and music
from (among loads and loads of others): Komeda, Cardigans (twice)
and Gus Gus. (The latest Cardigans interview is pretty funny..
and "Swedish").

Anyway, there are lots and lots of other great bands and music
there as well, so check it out (no I don't get paid for this):

Subject: Sobsister 7"

Just thought I'd let all of those interested that the Sobsister 7" on
Freak Scene Records is in fact out and definitly can be found at the
Freak Scene store  on St Eriksgatan in Stockholm. Juan does mailorder
as well and there are 750 copies so there should still be some left.

Nifty green vinyl and a sort of colorful sleeve makes the package nice
enough but personally the music doesn't do that much. Rather bland
mainstreamish college rock with some nice crunch to the guitars and an
occational slant towards a good melody. Fans of Salt and maybe PJ
Harvey might think it's their cup of tea but for an anorakkid like m
yself it's just too pretentious and rocking.

(too bad cause Juan is usually dead on)
