Moonshake released another album last year, but not on Too Pure. Some involvement from one of the Stereolab women, but again, that's not my department. I haven't heard anything that Moonshake have done since Margaret left to form Laika which I liked a lot better. But as far as Moonshake goes, I adored their "Big Good Angel" ep. Do they still sound the same, kind of Sultans of Ping > FC-like, or have they ... umm, gotten better? Moonshake was formed by can't-remember-his-first-name Callaghan (ex-Wolfhounds) and Maragret Fiedler in 1990. Released one, very My Bloody Valentine influenced, EP ("First") on Creation, and then moved on to Too Pure, where they released two singles, one album ("Eva Luna") and one mini album ("Big Good Angel"). Then Fiedler left to form Laika with Guy Fixsen, who produced most of the Moonshake records. Callaghan continued as Moonshake and released one album on Too Pure, and last year an album on some US label, with no European distribution (to my knowledge at least). I haven't heard the last album, but the last Too Pure album is pretty interesting, mainly built up from strange samples, I'd guess. The cover says something about it being "absolutely guitar free". Can't really think of anyhting to compare it to, though. And I have no idea what it could sound like live. Certainly wouldn't miss it if they played in Stockholm, though. /Ludde PS. And, no, they have never (to my knowledge) sounded anything like the Sultans Of Ping FC... PPS. Saw the video for Semi-naked yesterday. Pretty boring IMHO. --------------------------------- Date: 23 Jan 1997 09:59:08 +0100 From: Robert Cumming Subject: Re: Sin's Poll 1996 - Results! I only have the EVA LUNA album, which has its ups and down, but in general I'd say it's a pretty happening album. Laika is better though. I always thought the frontman smacked somewhat of Nick Cave back in the old days with Birthday Party, or perhaps of John Lydon (or a mix of the two)... there's that same vocal mannerism. Well first of all I think I got on this mailinglist too late to vote, anyhow I missed it somehow. I was suprised due to the fact that SP's album has been on every top 10 list I have seen this year. Lemme take a stab at that one: When they started out, they were on an independent label. Now, a few years later, even though they are more popular and have a worldwide record deal and are on Mercury in the states, people still generally would put them in the category of "indie" since they haven't radically changed their sound or anything - it's still pretty much the same band. The guitars are a bit harsher but besides that it's still the same sound (basically). And let's face it: the Cardigans are hardly U2. They *are* on the rise, but they are far from a household name here in the states, even among most fans of alternative rock. Isn't it pretty much the same thing in Sweden? (just wondering) //Chris --------------------------------- Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1997 22:14:12 +0100 From: iggystooge.livevid@mailbox.swipnet.se Subject: Re: Sin's Poll 1996 - Results! I try to buy all albums I get on vinyl and I couldnt find it until March 96 I think on vinyl here in Sweden, but as mentioned before I got the 2nd pressing that got #6759 of an lim. ed. of 5000 and got 1996 printed. So I guess I made a mistake about the release date in Sweden, or if it got a diffrent release date here. //j.nilsson ---------------------------------- Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1997 22:14:27 +0100 From: iggystooge.livevid@mailbox.swipnet.se Subject: Re: Sin's Poll 1996 - Results! > About the argument between iggy and Marten. Good question (even thought I don't have an answer to it) it makes me wonder what makes any band an indie band. Not that many bands are on an label that's actually independent these days, which I guess was the explanation earlier on. //j.nilsson ----------------------------- Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1997 23:02:48 +0200 (EET) From: Timo Riitamaa Subject: Open at yr own risk Seeing the name Iggy brought to my mind rock'n roll history. for some strange reason (really!) The reason I dislike Lokko is the way most of the interviews I read that he wrote are too full of egoism in my opinion. The only two I can remember now was one with Neil Young and one with Keith Richards (from some of the 2 first POP that was made I think) where it took like the first 1/3 of the text to tell stories about how he got to the hotel, what the cab driver said to him, what the other journalists said etc... and the last 1/3 was the same. My intrest in an interview is what the artist got to say, not what Lokko's cab drivers got to say... About Kristina, she wrote a book about London some years ago and claimed that one rock club in London (I think it was Dingwalls) had changed completley to an Acid House club or something, but the truth was that they played Acid House one day every week... Mans Ivarsson reviewed Iggy Pop's gig in Gothenburg 94 and the _only_ thing he complained about was that Iggy played his old song first and the songs from the latest album last... And that that was a bad thing too... So he just gave him ** (2) even though it seems like he likes everything else... I know there are more things I got hung up on when it comes to these 3 journalists but these were the only things that I could find in my memory. //j.nilsson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1997 23:00:55 +0100 From: iggystooge.livevid@mailbox.swipnet.se Subject: Re: Open at yr own risk At 23.02 97-01-23, Timo Riitamaa wrote: > Seeing the name Iggy brought to my mind rock'n roll history. for some > strange reason (really!) I used to be a punk when I was younger, but today's punk dont know anything about when and why punk started. They heard of the Pistols and maybe Clash too but hardly not anything else. > I'm talking about originality. Creativeness. Geniousness.... and all kinds > of things like that. Well I do prefer orginality, but I still rather listen to a good 'copy cat' band then some music that I don't like but still have originality. Since Iggy brought it up. Surely, the worst Swedish music journalist must be Eva Kvanta! It's not that easy. It all depends on what sound they change. If Cardigans' next album will sound as f.ex. Einsturzende Neubauten I really don't think anyone could or would claim they 'sold out'. However if they changed to a more simple and soft sound attracting my mother's and father's minds, I would definetely be suspicious. (Ok, depends on who's father and mother it is, but I hope you understand.) > Face it, sooner or later they will have to change it, at least to some > extent, if they want to stay popular. What I want to add is that a really creative band always change. The thing is to become a good songwriter but with different angles to music in different times and different state of minds. (Ok way abstract.) It's an evolution I think Cardigans are getting better and better. Even though I didn't say they are good. > (Note. I actually think the "sold out"-expression is bullshit) Sorry. I don't agree. Explain to me why you think the 'sold out' term is bullshit. Please. // Jens ------------------------------- End of SIN Digest #4.05 ***********************
