The All Janet - (Speech/AWSF) are working on their debut album, working
title now "Grace". The band says it will contain a load
of new songs, but also "hit" re-makes of 'Second' and
'Ever and More' from their EP "Second" released in 1996.
New songs includes among others 'Beautiful', 'This One'
and 'I Will Follow' (_not_ a cover of the U2 song with

Backfish - (AWSF) release their first single from their (February) upcoming
debut album this friday! The name of the single is "Add It" and
it is a very noisy, but of course, still exceptionally beautiful

Grass-Show - (EMI) will be the opening act for Kula Shaker on their tour
in England in January. The tour visits cities like Manchester,
Glasgow, London and Birmingham. This past fall, Grass-Show have
toured the UK several times, and been backed up by good reviews
in the British music press. Kula Shaker members saw their
performance at The Roundhouse in London last December and were
so impressed, they offered the band the opening slot right there
and then. Grass-Show will continue to tour the UK in February
together with Silver Gun. Their album "Something Smells Good in
Stinkville" will be released in the UK in March this year.

Harry Lime Records - have a release-party for the new compilation CD
"A Twist of Lime" in Uppsala at Kalmar Nation on
January 17th at 21.00. Bands playing are The
Wellmeant (it is worth to go there for them only,
believe me), Doolittle and A Sense of Reason.

Lemonator - (Warner) were finished with their debut album on monday
last week, and according to themselves, it turned out really,
really good. The album boasts twelve new songs, six that are
less than three minutes long pop-flicks. A new single, which
is said to sound somewhat like Teenage Fanclub, called
"You Could Be a Monster" will also be released in the beginning

Loosegoats - (Startracks) are going on tour together with Starmarket for
two weeks, either in the beginning of February or in the
beginning of March. Their debut album should be out around

Lousy - member Olli (lead vocals) quit the band this week without giving any
reasons to the decision. The band has decided to continue without
him, and will start recording 10-15 new songs very soon.

The Merrymakers - are going to the US! On February 3rd, the band appears at
legendary The Trobadour in Los Angeles, California. The gig
is part of the huge "Poptopia" festival which takes place
between January 31st and February 9th 1997. Last year they
had over 70 bands, including the Posies, the Muffs and Baby
Lemonade, playing at 7 venues, including the Roxy, Hollywood
Grand and Spaceland. For more information about Poptopia,

Records - I just wanted to take this time to suggest some "you're dead if
you miss these ones" upcoming releases. January 17th will be _the_
day. That day sees the release of the new single "Bad Day" from
_Petrol_ (Studio Bla), which is Sweden's own mix between Juliana
Hatfield and Lush, sort of. That day, _Backfish_ (AWSF) release their
debut single "Add It". If you've heard the band before, you know
what I'm talking about when I say that they're definitely one of
my highest hopes for 1997. And while we're talking about highest
hopes of 1997, on the very same day, Harry Lime Records release
their second compilation CD "A Twist of Lime", where you'll be
able to hear, among others, _The Wellmeant_. The Wellmeant is _the_
most interesting, yet unsigned, band in Sweden if you ask me.
Imagine songs that sound like The Sundays which transforms into
Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine and early Boo Radleys. Rumors say
we'll see them on Silence Records (bob hund etc.) soon, though
I'm so incredibly amazed that no one has signed them yet my jaw
drops to the floor every time I hear them. And finally, that day,
is also the day for Strawberry Songs second Eskilstuna-pop
compilation "E-pop.vol 2". Watch out for the band "St Moores" on
that one. Brit-pop a la early Blur but with fuzzier guitars.

Strawberry Songs - who releases the second Eskilstuna-Pop compilation single
called "e-pop.vol 2" on January 17th at MIDEM in Cannes,
will have a release party when they get back from France.
The party takes place at venue "Bla" in Eskilstuna on
February 1st, 1997. Featured bands on the compilation are:

Yvonne - (Energy Rekords) went to Gothenburg last weekend to start the
recording of their second album! Producer is, like the previously

Have any of you heard of Motorpsycho Blizzard? I've got a record by them
which is actually quite good, but I haven't heard/read anything about them.
It says it is recorded in Oslo, Stockholm and Nurnberg and I think they're
Norwegian. Would like some more info, please.
I also would like to know about the band Svelt, as they are playing in
Solvesborg the next week (ackording to the Luger tour list).

No, no, no please say it's not true, how can he do such a thing. This
guy is, in a very close race with the Smash Hit Wonders voxman Petter
Nyhlin, the best singer to ever walk on a Swedish stage. Imagine a
tall looning thin swedish version of Sean Tullycraft, the same nasal
twang and just the perfect stuttering misspronounciations.
Ahhh, you will be sorely missed, and what kind of death of indiepop
week is this, first holiday (new york city super popsters) call it
quites and now this.

Subject: Belch + Wannadies
Hello again! I just felt that I should share, with you, my thoughts on two
recordings that I've been listening to lately. The first one (by Belch) is
a demo (in fact it is two demos on one cassette).
Belch: "Sounds of Woo" - Well, since I loved Salt I can't really dislike
this. This band, from Uppsala, performs the same kind of mix between The
Cure and hardcore (???) as Salt, and Pia Hogberg even sounds very much like
Nina (but Nina roars better!). Some songs get very close to a carbon copy
of Salt (especially "Paraphiliac" and "I define". When I here these songs I
think of "Witty" and "So", respectively). But I do like the rest of it and
I think I will be listening to this tape a lot in the future. And I think
that, even, Salt would have been proud to make a song like "Barker". If
this sounds interesting I guess you could contact Pia by mail: pia@intra.se
And then we have the new Wannadies album, "Bagsy me". Well if you liked "Be
a girl" I guess you will also like this album. It's good but, in my
opinion, the least good album they have ever done. But then, I'm one of
those few who liked the old "american"-style Wannadies better than the
"british" Wannadies of today. Highlights are, apart from the singles
"Friends" and "Someone, somewhere", "Hit" and "Shorty" (about a guy who has
got some troubles finding a girl that's not taller than him. I have no idea
who this guy can be :-). Do you?). In "Shorty" I also find one of the
strangest "loans" I've ever heard in an indie-pop song. I'm sure it's
purely accidental, but for a few seconds a guitar plays a melody that I've
only heard in one song before - "Everything counts" by Depeche Mode!!!
Well, that's all for now, I guess.

Hey, hey - hold it right there - we're not dead yet. The songwriters
are still in the band, he wasn't the only one in the band that could
sing and, well, you just wait! :)
For the record, the reason he left was that he felt he were "the wrong
guy at the wrong place", he wanted to play _his_ songs and sing _his_
lyrics, not _our_ songs and _our_ lyrics. He hasn't contributed much to
the songwriting since the Las Palmas-era (early -95). He's planning to
form another band, though my guess is that it'll be pretty tough, stuck
in Mansarp outside Jonkoping with wife, kids, dogs and a house. But if
that happens, they'll probably sound pretty Wonder Stuff-ish, since his
Miles Hunt-fixation is pretty bad. But I wish him the best of luck,
we're still friends. We'll miss him. Cute, eh?

Monday, January 13th, 1997
New 4AD signing Gus Gus will be performing in their hometown of Reykjavik,
Iceland on Friday January 31st 1997. The event, in Perlan, will be held by
4AD in London in co-operation with Kjol & Anderson (Iceland), Warner Bros.
Records (USA), 4AD (USA), Polydor/Mercury (Canada), Virgin (France), Rough
Trade (Germany), Nippon Columbia (Japan) and the other companies who deal
with the groups interests in smaller territories. The concert will feature
projections, films and DJs in addition to a live performance from Gus Gus,
described by The Face as the band to watch in 1997.
Since signing with 4AD in 1996, Gus Gus' releases - the EP,
'Polyesterday', it's accompanying short film, and a series of much sought
after promo 12"s, have attracted an enormous amount of interest in the
group. The film, 'Polyesterday', has been shown on a wide variety of MTV
programmes (Alternative Nation, Party Zone, Chill Out Zone) and their music
has been heard nationwide on UK's Radio 1.
The Reykjavik show precedes their London debut at The Riverside on Thursday
February 13th 1997, the release of their new single 'Believe' (February
17th) which features superb mixes by LFO and 16B and their much anticipated
debut album 'Polydistortion' (April 7th). Gus Gus follow this with an
eight-date American tour in June and the European festival circuit
throughout the summer.
The Reykjavik show starts at 22.00 and 4AD and Kjol & Anderson have
negotiated special deals on airfares and hotel accommodation for the event.
Flights from the following destinations to Iceland are (pounds) 220 (UK):
Amsterdam, Baltimore-Washington, Boston, Copenhagen, Fort Lauderdale,
Glasgow, Halifax, Hamburg, London Heathrow, Luxemburg, New York, Orlando,
Oslo & Stockholm.
Additionally, there is a special deal with one of Reykjavik's best hotels
of (pounds) 35 (UK) per room (single, twin or double) per night.

I guess it is... not only their music can be said to Nick Cave/Birtday
Party influence... James Johnston in many ways can be compared to Nick
Cave. Live he is just as mad as Cave can be on a good day. Last time
they were in Denmark (touring with Dirty Three... more Cave
connections ;-) ) they had brought the Saxophone player from
Tindersticks... can remeber his name...

Err..well, no idea about the Estonian tape, but to be honest there hasn't
been a lot progress with the Finnish Chain 2 (the CD one). Due to some
unforeseen events in my life the launch of the chain was delayed somewhat,
but now I am happy to announce that the CD is on its way to subscriber #1
(Alexander Bailey), who'll surely let us know as soon as the envelope
reaches Oakland, California.
Sorry about the delay, I'll try to be less of a slacker next time (emphasis
on "try") :)

I thought the remix album ("Zipcode") wasn't more than interesting most of
the time. The remixes weren't very inspired; the best thing on the CD is the
Larry & The Lefthanded cover of "A Little Bit More" (or was it some other
track?).
Rather, I would recommend you (or anybody) look for a copy of "Big Lupu" or
their older classic album "Kings of Hong Kong" which was re-released a year
or two ago.

Sorry about being unclear. What I meant was that their new tape has three
songs, one of which is brand new (to me at least). They played all three
tracks from the demo plus another song which I heard for the first time. In
fact, the above mentioned "Cecilia" is a rather old Dada Girl song, I think
it is on one of the live tapes you have, Erik.

It is true, the Cucumber Farmer member Mikko Kanninen has joined All Stars
(at least for a test period), but of course he still continues with CF; in
fact they just had a gig here in Tampere last Saturday, but I wasn't
there...there have been some changes in the CF line-up and they are said to
be "more Sonic Youth" these days...so now you know.

Subject: The Cardigans news
Swedish evening newspaper Expressen had a story about The Cardigans upcoming
US tour today (yesterday), where they mention that the band had to say no
to appearing on The Late Night w/David Letterman show as well as the
Saturday Night Live show, because they just can't make it. They can, however,
make it to the Rosie O'Donnell and Conan O'Brian shows though.
Apparently the latest album "First Band on The Moon" sells 50.000 copies
a week in the US right now (380.000 sold so far), and the band is thinking
about saying yes to go on a touring US festival (no names mentioned) this
summer.
Right now though, they are still in Japan, but are heading back home to
Sweden on sunday this week (19/1) for a 10-day break. After that, they
are going on the tour which does not end before August. Here are the

generations can be made of a tape before it starts sounding like shit to
even the hardest low fidelity nut.... i'll split the trees up if it's needed

Subject: Finnish tape
Yesterday I received the finnish tape from Roberts and I really do
understand the confusion about who has had the tape and who hasn't. I don't
know if Monty Python has been involved or something, but there are (on the
list) a lot of strange signs, arrows and stuff. Some people have changed
place with others and so on. It's really a mess.
Well, Roberts seems to have done some work in structuring the rest of the
list, so it seems pretty clear which persons are about to receive the tape
after me. After me is Julian Minervini in New Jersey, and after him Chris
Forsberg. Then there are Dave Liljengren and another american guy (I don't
have the list beside me right now and I don't remember his name). If
someone has any objections to this, tell me, otherwise I will send the tape
to Julian early next week.

Hmm, this is definitely starting to look like a good gig, not to be
missed. I wonder if they have a homepage somewhere.. perhaps one can
find information about if they're bringing extra people and so on?
