I also have a copy of an interview the band did for Melody Maker. If anyone's interested then mail me and I'll either forward it, or post it to the list if there's enough interest (say > 5). >>[Melody Maker UK, 21 September 1996 p49] >> >>THE CARDIGANS [GOLD STAR IN RED CIRCLE CONTAINING 'BLOODY ESSENTIAL'] >>THE FIRST BAND ON THE MOON >>Polydor (11tks/39mins) >>IF people this cool, this clever and this outrageously gifted weren't >>also thoroughly misunderstood, it wouldn't be fair. But _still_. The >>Cardigans' "Life" was last year's quietest classic, sweet, sumptuous and >>strange to the point of being faintly sinister: people in general being >>the dumb-ass f***lings they are, it won them a reputation not as >>triumphant individualists but as some kind of joke, simply for forsaking >>rock convention in favour of braver things. >> >>It beggars belief! It feels like we've all said the same thing so many >>times, so hark: there is no "right" or "wrong" kind of pop music - like >>love, it is merely effective or ineffective. Hence, The Cardigans' >>appropriation of easy listening/lounge music is in no way comical, rather >>it seems fantastically courageous, an open embrace of taboo possibility - >>and, besides, Easy is only their most prominent influence, not >>necessarily their strongest: equal props go out to The Beatles, Altered >>Images ("Happy Meal II" drips with rampant Graganeering), Saint Etienne, >>light disco, even Black Sabbath (their penchant for cocktail covers of >>Sab songs continues here with a breezy "Iron Man", though that joke's >>starting to wilt somewhat.) >> >>What's more important is that "The First Band On The Moon" is, on its own >>terms, one of the most accomplished and affecting pop records of the year >>- for all the cheap charges hurled their way, The Cardigans understand >>the balance of thought and spontaneity, the cool and the foolishness >>required for great music _perfectly_. The kick inside the gut when "Your >>New Cuckoo" turns its chorus flip; "Heartbreaker" and its dovetailing of >>dulcet melody and words shot through with helpless, calculated cruelty; >>the way "Never Recover" goes zigzagging off into five horizons - to an >>open mind, The Cardigans sound like a band worth taking _very_ seriously >>(those still in doubt should turn to "Losers", a quietly staggering wedge >>of experimental bugglegum as brave and thrilling as anything from the new >>Boo Radley's album). >> >>It's tempting to suggest that the sheer sweetness of The Cardigans sound >>is some kind of slap back at the reality of a hateful world (if their >>lives are as suffused with sex as the lyrics suggest, it's tricky to feel >>sorry for them, but then Swedes, traditionally, rich, healthy, >>intelligent, beautiful and suicidal, have always excelled at "Diamond >>shoes too tight/Wallet too small for my 50s" logic). In Cardigans >>country, love is a mug's game, sex is powerplay, and the things we do for >>both are at best manipulative, at worst pathetically degrading. Happily, >>I agree, so I have no problem proclaiming "The First Band On The Moon" >>the second best pop LP of the year as she stands (see how _that_ looks on >>the posters, you bastards). >> >>It really is something very, very special. Don't snigger: I've got my >>finger on the trigger. This is _real_ music. >> >>TAYLOR PARKES >> >> >>I still have the Cardigans feature from the other week's MM to type up - >>it's just under 2 pages' worth so it may take a little while - I am quite >>busy at the moment - unless I can find some OCR software lying around at >>work! >> >>Did anyone else see them on TFI Friday (UK)? Nina appeared to have >>'shooing gum' stuck under her feet again - does she always stand so still >>- even at gigs? (For those wondering, earlier this year at the Leeds >>Sound City event here in the UK, Nina joked at the end that 'The reason >>that I don't move around much is because I have chewing gum stuck under >>my foot' - say it to yourself with a Swedish accent). >> >>As for the mailing list, please do help Nicolas to try and find an >>alternative - otherwise I won't have any reason to spend ages typing up >>the articles and reviews that I find... >> >>James -------------------------------- Date: Tue, 15 Oct 1996 05:27:07 -0400 From: James Hoye Subject: Another FBOTM review This was posted to the Cardigans mailing list, and provides a track by track guide. I was wondering if you all knew of an effective way of parking in Stockholm with a car. I'll be staying with a friend near Odensgatan. The reason I'm asking is that I was there in July, and I remember that it was a total bitch to always put money in the meters, i.e. in the weekday mornings after hanging out all night. Thus, I was wondering if the locals knew of a special Swedish secret to alleviate this madness. I've been to big cities before, and parking is always a hassle. So, all I'm asking for is a little advice. Thanks, Pete ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 1996 21:38:25 -0700 From: FP95A40 Subject: leslies leslies debutalbum "totally brilliant" has so far been bought by 3500 people in sweden. not bad at all for a small band with a small record company called "Harry Lime". in november their album will be released in japan on a major label (Colombia/Nippon). If you are planning to park your car in downtown Stockholm during daytime, you better bring a bucketfull of coins. It's gonna cost ya, as you're already aware of... up to 20 SEK an hour, depending on how central it is. I'm afraid there are no ways around it. It's free after 6 PM, given that they're not cleaning the street that particular night (check the signs). There is one solution though... let me take care of your car :) I can drive it to my job and park for free there during the days. Then you can have it back when you need it... -------------------------------- Date: 16 Oct 96 05:39:03 EDT From: Mo Holkar / UKG <100745.3625@CompuServe.COM> Subject: Tony Iommi >Just a question, who is Tony Iommi? Some time ago, Ad wrote: * For the tape, how about some more Dada Girl. Well, you can count on that! :) * Do they have anything recorded beyond the 3-song "Sandpit" tape? They did a four-track demo tape before that, that's where "Everything About The Gun" which was on the Finnish tape #1 is from. No other recorded material, I think; but I heard that they are seriously planning on doing a self-released cd single/ep, as it seems that no label in Finland is interested in releasing anything from them. No idea when the cd would be out (or even recorded) but I hope it will happen one of these days because they are definitely one of the best bands emerging from this country in a long while and they deserve much more attention. I received two 7" singles a couple of days ago from the label that brought us the bob hund "edvin medvind" 7" single, Dilettante Productions. If you want to read more about their "Stockholm Archive Series" you should visit: http://www2.passagen.se/benno/Home/Stokage/ 10_Stokage/Spotlight/1spotlight.html It was one 7" by Fint Tillsammans and one by Mono. These two bands and their singles have a couple of things in common: they sing out of tune in Swedish, they're probably great live (anyone seen them?), their songs have got strange lyrics and funny titles, both singles could be filed under "lo-fi" and I don't think any of the bands had existed today if it wasn't for bob hund. Now, these are just my opinions of course, and though I don't think they're especially good (the singles, not my opinions :) I'd still recommend you to get them. Why, you ask? Well, they're on vinyl and vinyl is always vinyl. :) And on both of the singles there are interesting editorials about putting out vinyl, written by the guy behind Dilettante, Magnus Boman. Here's the address if you're interested: Dilettante Productions Box 6104 S-102 32 STOCKHOLM SWEDEN Magnus Boman has got an e-mail address, I think you can find it at the URL I wrote at the beginning of this mail. Also, has anyone heard the new Loosegoats single yet? Former Loosegoat Jens says that it's damn good (he was still in the band when they recorded it). I think it was supposed to be released on the 14th, but when I visited the local record-store today they had not received it yet. Hmm... for some reason I bought the new Boo Radleys album... don't really know what I was thinking... Take care, Magnus - _NOT_ listening to the new album by the Boo Radleys ---------------------------- Date: Thu, 17 Oct 1996 06:05:24 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Sin's Music on the Radio [21-Oct-96] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie MUSIC ON THE RADIO Scandinavian Indie October 21st -> October 27th Day Date Artist Recorded --- ----- --------------------------------- -------------------------------- Mon 21/10 Dodgy Stockholm, Gino 18-Sep-96 Tue 22/10 The Fabulous Thunderbirds M|nster}s, Bluesfest. 18-May-96 Wed 23/10 Lionrock Stockholm, Lollipop '96 Thu 24/10 Jesus Lizard Denmark, Roskilde Festival '96 Sun 27/10 Oyster Band (R) Stockholm, Gino 15-Nov-95 This list covers the Swedish National Channel P3's "Live" - always at 21.03 (R) = Rerun ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- This list is also available on the Scandinavian Indie WWW pages at: http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/uprad.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------- Date: Thu, 17 Oct 1996 06:03:52 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: KonTur Tour List _Update_ [16-Oct-96] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie KonTur Tour List UPDATE Scandinavian Indie October 16th, 1996 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Abhinanda 15/11 Boras Rockborgen New Date De Lyckliga Kompisarna 02/11 Kungsbacka TBA Undecided Venue Staffan Hellstrand (w/The Nomads) 09/11 Sunne Selma Lagerlof New Date 23/11 Torsby Hotell Bjornidet New Date 13/12 Stockholm Studion New Date ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The COMPLETE KonTur Tour List can be found on the Scandinavian Indie WWW : http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/kontur.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- Date: Thu, 17 Oct 1996 06:04:18 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Luger Tour List _Update_ [16-Oct-96] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie Luger Tour List UPDATE Scandinavian Indie October 16th 1996 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCANDINAVIAN: BABY JESUS (S) - The Mother Mary Electric Society / BMG *NEW* 18/10 Goteborg (S) Underground w/H-BLOCKX (D) FIRESIDE (S) - Startracks / American Recordings - House of Kicks / BMG 31/10 Amsterdam (NL) Paradiso New Date 1/11 Essen (D) Zeche Carl New Date 2/11 Enger (D) Forum New Date 3/11 Hamburg (D) Knust New Date 4/11 Berlin (D) Knaack New Date 5/11 Koln (D) Underground New Date 6/11 Munchen (D) Backstage New Date 9/11 York (UK) Tibbers New Date w/VENT 414 10/11 Glasgow (UK) King Tuts New Date w/VENT 414 11/11 Sheffield (UK) The Leadmill New Date w/VENT 414 12/10 London (UK) Hannover Grand New Date w/VENT 414 LOOSEGOATS (S) - Startracks / House of Kicks 1/11 Umea (S) Folkets Hus Date Changed 2/11 Sundsvall (S) Pipeline Date Changed ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NON-SCANDINAVIAN: EL VEZ AND THE LOVELY ELVETTES & THE MEMPHIS MARIACHIS (MEXICO) - *NEW* Sympathy For The Record Industri 18/11 Oslo (N) Sentrum Scene 19/11 Lund (S) Mejeriet LIFETIME (USA) - Jade Tree / Import 12/11 Linkoping (S) Skylten Date Changed 13/11 Stockholm (S) Kafe 44 New Date MOUNTAIN GOATS (USA) - Naptime / Amigo 29/10 Stockholm (S) Studion w/DR.KOSMOS (NONS/Bor.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The COMPLETE Luger Tour List can be found on the Scandinavian Indie WWW : http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/luger.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------- Date: Thu, 17 Oct 1996 06:04:37 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Motor Tour List _Update_ [16-Oct-96] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie Motor Tour List UPDATE Scandinavian Indie October 16th, 1996 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCANDINAVIAN: bob hund Silence 19/10 Ljungby - Cafe 1 New Date 6/11 Kalmar - Studentkaren New Date 9/11 Skelleftea - Musikfabriken New Date Neneh Cherry Virgin *NEW* special guests; Although this isn't actually a Scandinavian Indie question per se, it's pretty related when people visit the city in order to go to gigs etc, so... This is something I would like to know more about as well. I usually stay around Odengatan (Odenplan) as well when I'm there - and during the weekdays it's pretty much hell. 10 SEK / hour around Odenplan = 100 SEK / day (it's free between 6pm -> 8am I think). And the Oden Garage on Odenplan is just too expensive as well. Any thoughts/solutions appreciated! //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------- Date: Thu, 17 Oct 1996 09:11:44 +0200 (EET) From: Roberts Galvans Subject: some questions (non-scan-indie) hi folk did any1 watch MTV at sunday (i mean Cure live'n'direct) wasn't that Swing tour ??? thanx RoberC //se51097@lanet.lv --------------------------------- Date: Thu, 17 Oct 96 09:13:25 +0100 From: ludde@kore.lk.se (Ludvig Borgne) Subject: Stockholm Parking Problems >> I was wondering if you all knew of an effective way of parking in Stockholm >> with a car. > > This is something I would like to know more about as well. If you're staying in Stockholm for a few days, and don't need access to the car while you're there, I would recommend parking the car in some villa area outside the city center (e.g. on Liding|), and take a bus/underground back to the center. There are also some big parking areas just outside the city, close to underground stations (e.g. Ropsten), where you can park a lot cheaper than in the center. /Ludde ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Oct 1996 09:32:06 +0100 From: Julie Subject: Apocalyptica Hi! I heard the Apocalyptica cd yesterday and think it's great. Four cellos playing Metallica is utterly rare (how come it always takes a finnish band to figure out something so brilliant?). Even though I'm no Metallica-fan the record was still great entertainment. Have anyone on the list seen the band live? I would really like to hear about it if anyone have. Do they play other stuff live than Metallica? Red Snapper played at So What (Oslo) yesterday, and it was one of the best concerts I've seen in years (my hole life, maybe). They are playing Gothenburg tonight (I think), and Copenhagen on friday and saturday. Bring friends, families and everybody you know, because this is what music is all about! They were playing techno/trip-hop music live with no other instruments than bass, guitar, drums and a sax. The drummer was amazing, he's also the drummer in Aloof, and I can't remember seeing a better drummer live! A mixture between Morphine, Soul Coughing and acid jazz/trip hop is what popped into my mind. After the concert the drummer also dj'ed wich (off course) also helped maximizing the evening. Go for it!! The sound engineer did a great job to, if pushing buttons is an artform he must be the Picasso of all technical crews! This was just a little news from the concert scene in Oslo. I guess the norwegians are not that well-represented on this list, so if I get some spare time I'll keep you informed in the future (if anyone is interested). My name is Michael and I live in Linköping, where I study political science at the university. Besides this I'm trying to start a career as a pop journalist - I've had some fruitful contacts with the internet magazine Benno and the fanzine Rubber Soul. Favourite bands? Well, my record collection involves both Beethoven, Pantera and Prodigy - I listen to all kinds of music, life becomes too boring just doing one thing at a time. But if we're speaking scandinavian indie: Popsicle (of course), Blithe, Starmarket, Larry and the Lefthanded, Pusjkins and Mazarine Street (after their marvellous gig on Herrgår'n yesterday). Well, I think that will be all for now, but believe me, you will hear from me again! / Micke ----------------------------------- Date: Fri, 18 Oct 1996 22:44:24 +0200 (GMT+0200) From: burrito Subject: Re: Sin's Music on the Radio [21-Oct-96] According to chief@lysator.liu.se: > Thu 24/10 Jesus Lizard Denmark, Roskilde Festival '96 I had the mic there for a short while, in Puss I scream (very loud) "Get me out of the truck". <:o) Petter ---------------------------------- Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 07:22:44 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Luger Tour List _Update_ [19-Oct-96] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie Luger Tour List UPDATE Scandinavian Indie October 19th 1996 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCANDINAVIAN: CLOUDBERRY JAM (S) - Nons / Border 25/10 Bo i Telemark (N) Kroa Cancelled THE HELLACOPTERS (S) - White Jazz / House Of Kicks 12/11 Stockholm (S) Gino New Date MINDJIVE (S) - Burning Heart / MD 18-21/12 Volvopaloza '96 featuring 59 times the pain (18&19/12), No Fun At All (20&21/12), Liberator & Mindjive - (Motor). w/Refused (S) Startrec / HOK between 3/12 - 16/12 3/12 Chemnitz (D) AJZ Talschock New Date 5/12 Bochum (D) Zwischenfall New Date 6/12 Saarbrucken (D) TBA New Date 7/12 Koln (D) Underground New Date 9/12 Hamburg (D) Logo New Date 13/12 M-Esterhofen (D) Ballroom New Date 14/12 Berlin (D) TBA New Date 15/12 Lohne-Maerschend(D) Circus Musious New Date 16/12 Schleswig (D) JUZ New Date 18/12 Hamburg (D) Markthalle New Date 19/12 Osnabruck (D) Hydepark New Date 20/12 Essen (D) Carl Zeche New Date 21/12 Koln (D) Luxor New Date MONSTER (S) - Startracks / House Of Kicks (w/Candysuck (S) Startracks 16/11) 16/11 Stockholm (S) Studion New Date NAKED (S) - Stockholm Label Group *NEW* 12/12 Vilhelmina (S) TBA REFUSED (S) - Startrec. / House Of Kicks w/Mindjive (S) Burning Heart / MD between 3/12 - 16/12 3/12 Chemnitz (D) AJZ Talschock New Date 5/12 Bochum (D) Zwischenfall New Date 6/12 Saarbrucken (D) TBA New Date 7/12 Koln (D) Underground New Date 9/12 Hamburg (D) Logo New Date 13/12 M-Esterhofen (D) Ballroom New Date 14/12 Berlin (D) TBA New Date 15/12 Lohne-Maerschend.(D) Circus Musious New Date 16/12 Schleswig (D) JUZ New Date THE ULTRA BIMBOOS (SF) - Twaang / Import *NEW* 14/12 Stockholm (S) Blue Funky ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NON-SCANDINAVIAN: EL VEZ AND THE LOVELY ELVETTES & THE MEMPHIS MARIACHIS (MEXICO) - Sympathy For The Record Industry 18/12 Oslo (N) Sentrum Scene Wrong date in last list 19/12 Lund (S) Mejeriet Wrong date in last list HALF JAPANESE DUO TOUR (USA) - Fire / Border *NEW* 16/11 Vaxjo (S) Kafe Stina LONG FIN KILLIE (UK) - Too Pure / Border 8/11 Gavle (S) Club Latting New Date NADA SURF (USA) - Electra / Warner (arranged w/EMA Telstar) *NEW* 3/11 Malmo (S) KB 4/11 Stockholm (S) Studion TRUSTY (USA) - Dischord / Border (w/Ignite & Straight Faced (USA) 7/11) *NEW* 7/11 Linkoping (S) Skylten 8/11 Stenungsund (S) TBA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The COMPLETE Luger Tour List can be found on the Scandinavian Indie WWW : http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/luger.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 07:24:30 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Mono, Fint Tillsammans and Loosegoats On Thu, 17 Oct 1996, magnus@lousy.pp.se (Lousy) wrote: > Also, has anyone heard the new Loosegoats single yet? I've heard several people say that it is *fantastic*, though I, like you, have yet to find it somewhere. Unfortunately. It ought to be out though, StartRec said that it would be out on the 14th themselves, as late as on October 2nd. > Hmm... for some reason I bought the new Boo Radleys album... don't really > know what I was thinking... :-) I won't go into this discussion, though several reviews have said that they have moved back into their "old" more noisy guitar sound, after making the "this will please the general public" last album, scaring away the average tracks listener (again). You mean that's not true, right? //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 07:24:50 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Booking Agencies - some thoughts Last night when Mazarine Street played here (actually a pretty amazing gig - it was some time ago I saw a band play with so much heart, especially the drummer and the guy on bass) I learned that they (too) have recently switched to the EMA Telstar booking agency, which means that they won't take less than 10.000 SEK for a gig (this gig was the last one booked pre-EMA Telstar) from now on. This piece of information started a discussion about more and more bands moving over to EMA Telstar (the biggest and "wealthiest" booking agency in Sweden) where one has to expect to shell out anything from 8.000 SEK to whatever if one wants one of their bands to play at one's venue. Other bands on EMA Telstar include Brainpool, Standards, Starlet and Superswirls, just to mention a few - and I'm told Superswirls is at about 15.000 SEK, Starlet about 8.000 - 10.000 SEK / gig. This means that smaller venues (like the ones here in Linkoping) won't be able to get these bands, and what will be the result of this? Well, here's my thoughts: first the good one - we will see more new and upcoming bands, because the venues can't afford the "bigger" ones, which I think is great. The downside is probably that these bands won't get as many gigs anymore (and some of them haven't even been out playing that much yet either), which also means that less people will know about them - or buy their records, unless the label puts enough money into major ad campains, TV performances etc. etc. I wonder if these bands think they will make it big if they are signed to the largest booking agency in Sweden, or if it is the agency that has started to notice that "oh, these new pop bands, that only Motor and Luger previously have handled, bring in a lot of money - let's sign a couple" ?? Both of these "thoughts" are really sad, if that's how it is. Well, I'll stop babbling about it now... //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Oct 1996 07:23:12 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Sin's Music on the TV [18-Oct-96] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie MUSIC ON THE TV Scandinavian Indie October 18th -> October 24th Day Date Artist/What TV Program Channel Time --- ----- ---------------------- ------------------- ----------- ----- Fri 18/10 Standards, Space Age.
