CD: Blissful, Mufflon 5 and Stickboy. Trastocksfestivalen will happen 1997 - though in a much smaller scale. In 1998, the festival will be back in full force again. The label is keeping a very tight lid on an upcoming Project with our favourites Backfish! But, exclusive to Scandinavian Indie, the plan can be revealed! Apparently the band met The Posies at a gig some time ago, and gave them a tape. Since then, they have stayed in contact with each other, and now Kenny from The Posies wants to and will produce their upcoming debut album, if everything works as planned! Note the "if" though. Regarding Trastocksfestivalen again: in the latest edition of the swedish Trivial Pursuit, the festival has been awarded with a question. The label still looks for new and promising bands, so keep sending them your demos! (Source: Scandinavian Indie) Chewinggum Weekend - (Bums) was finally signed to a label, though not a swedish one! "Bums" is really a danish label. Are we supposed to notice a trend here? (Source: Scandinavian Indie) Dorian Records - the label that released the neat compilation CD called "A Chance To Shine" a while ago is already planning on a second compilation CD, though the name and a couple more bands has yet to be decided. Bands decided so far are: The Wellmeant, Morning Penguin, Supernova, Stargazer, Curseflower, Sandy Lyle, Lugi, Honeys, Popeye, Disko and Dr. Saturn. There are 300 copies of the compilation ("A Chance To Shine") left (1000 copies were made) and if you are interested in ordering one, contact Dorian Records, Seminariegatan 3, 302 32 Halmstad, Sweden - Phone: +46-35-133226. The price is set to 100 SEK (plus postage and packaging). Foreign orders are also welcome. If you live in Tokyo, Japan, you might want to know that Tower Records there has 100 copies in store. (Source: Scandinavian Indie) Dune - (Harry Lime) was very recently signed to Harry Lime Records. One of the band members is actually the owner of Dorian Records. More news will be posted about this soon! (Source: Scandinavian Indie) Fidget - (Mega) will be hiding in the studio in Varberg (south of Gothenburg) after their Emmaboda Festival gig. There they will record their forthcoming debut album throughout August and into September, produced by Magnus (again). Those t-shirts Expressen Fredag wrote about they would wear at the Lollipop festival turned out to be the truth, though the band has not idea who "talked" - it was supposed to be a secret... (Source: Scandinavian Indie) Fly - have been rehearsing all summer, and as a result, have not played anywhere but at the Emmaboda Festival this weekend. At the festival, three interested record companies were there to watch & listen. This will hopefully will result in a contract in the near future. (Source: Scandinavian Indie) Harry Lime Records - are working on a follow-up to their "In The Limelight" compilation CD. The new compilation will have bands like Rottingdean, Jumprope (from the US), Peat, Dune and A Sense of Reason. More bands are to be announced. The CD is planned to be released in October. (Source: Scandinavian Indie) Norwegian Indie - info and news. Thanks to Julie Forchhammer at Tilt Management & Booking, here's a pretty good overview of groups they handle, and of course, a good look at what Norway has got, something that Scandinavian Indie has lacked information about for a long time, sadly enough. But here it is! If you want to know more - just ask on the mailing list! Slut Machine: Hardcore band from Bergen. Sounds like Tad, Sick Of It All, Pantera, Jesus Lizard etc. They are releasing their debut album in september. Cane: An indiepop band also from Bergen. Female vocal, they have been described as a mixture between Bjork and Nina Hagen! Cane are signed to Warner Records, and will release their debut album in the beginning of 1997. Gluecifer: A twisted hardcore band from Oslo. Some of the members used to play in O'men. Played at this years Quart- festival and got good reviews. Red Harvest: A difficult band to describe. They play a kind of goth/industrial hardcore, but you have to listen to them to understand what I mean. They are signed to Voices Of Wonder. Their third album is released September 9th. Sloane: An indiepop band from Bergen. Unsigned, up and coming, charming, melodic. Sister Sonny: A Sonic Youth like band from Bergen. Unsigned, promising, unpredictable (in a good way). Unfortunately they are not sure if they want to put 100% in their music or not, just wait and see... Peachfuzz: Young, unsigned indiband from Bergen. Two girls and two boys. (Female vocal). They started this spring, but have already impressed a lot of people. Charming, Slowdivish, popish, naivish. Vampire State Building: From Oslo. Industrial techno rock. Are laying low at the moment due to lack of time. (Source: Julie Forchhammer) Rock Summer Riga - '96 festival incurred a loss of 100,000 lats ($50.000) for its organizing firm Rock Summer Baltica. The festival was held on July 12-14 in Riga and brought together such international acts as ZZ Top, Bjork, East 17, Midge Ure, the Mike Flowers Pops and many other foreign and Latvian bands. Organizers of the festival owe money to different hotels, air companies and other services, and the concrete losses will be calculated in two weeks, reports Dienas bizness. The festival will be held again next year if Rock Summer Baltica manages to pay off its debt. (Source: The Baltic Times) Surreal - from Varberg are finished with the recording and mixing of their upcoming debut album "Friends of Soap & Water" on the Recordia label, though they have not decided when to release it yet. Taking care of booking the band is our friend Hansi Friberg nowadays. (Source: Scandinavian Indie) Violett - the band who opens the "A Chance To Shine" compilation CD is actually the same band that sent a demo to ZTV program "Knesset" (the one they made a video for), though back then the band was called "Alexis". Yeah, uh... actually that should be Roovel Oobik (well, actually that should be R=F6=F6vel =D6=F6bik, you know, with dots over the o's everywhere) and they did not release an album on a Swedish label, but a _Finnish_ label, called Stupido Twins, the label, that is, not the album. The album is called "Popsubterranea" and it's quite alright. I think the band started back in the late 80's (a wild guess) as a bit of a punk rock band, really, and had a couple of songs on one of the Eesti Pop comp. lp's can't remember which one though - maybe #10? Then they released a 7" ep on Stupido Twins ("The History of The USSR", or something) and then the above discussed album, cd only. I think by this time they had started experimenting with drugs, judging be the sound of the album at least - it's a cross between their earlier style and (then) current indie rock with a psychedelic twist - plenty of wah-wah guitars and nonsense lyrics here. The sleeve is horrific and generally I think they would have done much better if they'd released it on a label that actually had a clue. Later they got pretty excited about dub and modern dance sounds and slowly evolved into a full-blooded dance band, released a tape album (called "Psychikosmos", or something) (on an Estonian label) that sounds excitingly weird but I couldn't even try and categorize it for you... and then split up, last year I think. Some of the band continue under the title Hypnosaurus, or something; they also dj at raves in Estonia regularly. That's all I know. The Estonian Indie Tape has a couple of songs from the band, so *ahem* when it reaches you you'll be able to sample their sound around 1993-1994... Sorry about the sketchy facts, I was working on memory alone.... sami ---------------------------- Date: Mon, 12 Aug 1996 13:18:18 GMT From: TOBIAS PEGGS Subject: Grass Show Hi there... I'm just about to write a feature on Grass Show who, in my opinion, should become MASSIVE here in the UK. I've just ploughed through some of your digests and found very little about said band. I am interested in hearing some views from the band's fellow country (wo)men rather than relying on my own opinions. Any views would be most welcome. Thanks, Tobias. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Aug 96 22:59:00 -0100 From: johan.jeppsson@p255.lurivax.ct.se (Johan Jeppsson) Subject: The Malmoe festival The original Swedish festival, the Malmoe festival started Friday 9th and there has at least been some interesting acts performing. First thing I saw was the band Favorita on Saturday. A band with members from Beagle and Lolita Pop. A rather boring band with the standard cheesy radio-pop-songs in english. I think one could ask for a little more fantasy. Some half-interesting songs but in the end a rather poor popband. Next up was Mutts a three-piece that's been around for a while and who have just released a single. I was happily surprised by their energetic powerpop. Some really good songs and a good singer. There is a possibility that these guys will become really good. A bit like a Swedish Ash. The bassplayer was a bit of a stiffy though. Buy their single if your into this kind of stuff, I think I will. Last band of the night was one of Swedens finest, Bob Hund. As usual a really good show with the quality punk/pop/synth/rock'n'roll that is their trademark. I really hope that they will release "Kvicksilver", "Haer upphoer allmaen vaeg", "Dusseldorf" and "Dagen daa kaenslan av att allting boerjar om aaterkom" on their new album. They are just sooo good. Especially "HSAV" which is incredibly beautiful. The ending of the concert was probably the longest feedback-orgy I've ever heard. Guess they were tired and wanted the audience to go home. :) Tuesday when I arrived at the festival. It seemed quite empty in front of the rockstage. Only a few Skate/Hardcore-fans and some others had come to watch Dipper. A band that has received credit from members of Bob Hund and Eggstone. I understand what has caught their eye but I'm not convinced of their superiority. The singer has a powerful personality and their popsongs has a dark punky edge to them and odd lyrics. But not all songs are good and they tend to be a bit boring. The singer needs to improve his english a bit too. Last Act of the evening was Olle Ljungstroem who did a great gig. A really like his classic country rock/pop even though I think his two previous albums are better than the last one. He also proved once more his ability of forgetting lyrics and talking almost entirely crap during the show. :) Swedens best soloartist in my opinion. Other interesting acts on the festivals was Wilmer X (who played during the same time as Dipper) and Kent which I've just seen _too_ many times lately. (They dont change much between shows now do they?). Wonder how they manage to keep the spirit up after touring the way they do. ~Johan Jeppsson~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Aug 1996 13:01:01 +0200 From: totte.pop@mbox309.swipnet.se (Totte Pop) Subject: Sommarens sista suck! I guess you have, the sad thing is I can't listen to it anymore, my tapedeck went nuts and the tape is now "unlistenable". Maybe I wouldn't anyway, school started today and I think Nine Inch Nails will spend a lot time in the tape deck from now on. Hope this "Sommarens sista suck" in Eskilstuna which Totte told us about will be fun, and Erik, there's your chance to see/listen to St. Moores, if you haven't yet. >Did anyone see their 18 minute performance?! I missed it by about 3 hours! Yes, I did. It was, well, I haven't seen that much livemusic in my days so I can't compare it to something else, but it was fun, and I enjoyed it, but I liked their gig in Emmaboda more. If I rate the ones I've seen the list would be like this: 1. Emmaboda 2. Lollipop & Stockholm water festival When Sindy Kills Me played at the Emmaboda festival Tobias from Yvonne joined for the last song. And afterwards I've read that someone from Honey is Cool also would play with them, but as I don't know how the HIC-members look like I can't tell if this is true or not. I guess someone might know that better than me. And BTW, if you're intrested I've made an Yvonne web-page, (Sorry, only in Swedish). If you look at it please let me know what you think and what I should do to make it better, but remember, it's only 2 weeks old and I've just got started, so some pages aren't what I want them to be yet. That goes for the newspages in particular. The week after Lollipop I met Stereolab chanteuse Mary Hansen at the Wag Club in London, where Quickspace Supersport played. She told me that although the groop has played several festivals, Lollipop was by far the best and most fun they had performed at. Great weather, great crowd, and lots of other good bands to look at. I agree that their gig at Studion last year was extraordinary. As for Quickspace Supersport, they were OK but a little boring. Sort of noisy droning guitar rock, like Stereolab meets Sonic Youth meets Amon Duul. They supported Prolapse, which is a great great band in the vein of old experimental punk bands like Swell Maps, Mekons, and the Fall. Other new acts I caught live were Pram (cosmic weird dub-music, on the excellent Too Pure label) and Snow Pony. The latter band features My Bloody Valentine members and were really exciting, sort of Curve meets Happy Mondays. I also saw Damned (boring) and Throwing Muses, who are well worth checking out when they come to Sweden soon, even though their recent material is a tad too poppy for me. Ho, ho, ho! Just like drummer Korhonen of legendary swedish Reeperbahn! Are we talking doppelgangers here!? ;-) Jan Sundstrom --------------------------------- Date: Tue, 20 Aug 96 14:56:37 +0200 From: etxsahm@cyber.ericsson.se (Marten Sahlen) Subject: Re: Hello everyone Pete Korhonen wrote: > My name is Pete Korhonen and I am from Finland. > > I play currently drums in a Finnish band called The Enter - the other > musicians are Otra (former Psychoplasma singer/songwriter/guitarist), Osku > (also plays bass in Brats) and Kimmo Riite (has played in Jeremias with me > and in various other local bands here in Joensuu). Welcome to the list. Say hello to Otra, Psychoplasma used to be one of my favourite Finnish bands alongside Mana Mana, AD, and Sielun Veljet. I loved their gig at the Hultsfred Festival back in 89 or so. As Jan already pointed out, the drummer of seminal Swedish band Reeperbahn was/is called Peter Korhonen. That's some coincidence, huh? ---------------------------------- Date: Tue, 20 Aug 1996 17:31:04 +0200 From: d-sunjan@jmk.su.se (Jan Sundstrom) Subject: Re: The Malmoe festival >Last band of the night was one of Swedens finest, Bob Hund. >As usual a really good show with the quality punk/pop/synth/rock'n'roll that is >their trademark. I really hope that they will release "Kvicksilver", "Haer >upphoer allmaen vaeg", "Dusseldorf" and "Dagen daa kaenslan av att allting >boerjar om aaterkom" on their new album. Que? I haven't heard those songs???? anyone taped them, by chance? Didn't they play "Papperspase pa mitt huvud", which they performed for the first time at Lollipop? >Last Act of the evening was Olle Ljungstroem who did a great gig. So i'm not the only fan on scan-indie ;-) But i agree he's not as good as he used to be. Umm, haven't heard them myself, but the great Arvid Tuba (from Falun, like grass show too) says they're bland. Their sleeve look like Blur counterfeit, and so does the music, according to Tuban. I trust him... Short news: * Hultsfred Festival 1996 - both SVT (Swedish national television) and ZTV have upcoming programs about the festival. According to evening newspaper Aftonbladet, SVT's first (out of three) program will be shown on thursday (tomorrow) August 22nd (but the TV magazine doesn't say anything about that!). The second program will be shown on September 1st and the third on September 2nd. ZTV's program is on the way as well (I think it's on friday, though I'm not sure). //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 1996 05:00:25 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Luger Tour List _Update_ [21-Aug-96] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie Luger Tour List UPDATE Scandinavian Indie August 21st 1996 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCANDINAVIAN: CLOUDBERRY JAM (S) - Nons / Border *NEW* 5/11 Copenhagen (DK) Cafe Rust DISMEMBER (S) - Nuclear Blast Records/House of Kicks *NEW* 5/9 Stockholm (S) Kafe 44 FIRESIDE (S) - Startrec/American Recordings - House of Kicks/BMG 31/8 London (UK) Underworld New (w/Melvins) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NON-SCANDINAVIAN: NEFILIM (UK) - Beggars Banquet/MNW ILR-MD 1/10 Stockholm (S) Studion Date Changed 3/10 Bergen (N) Kvarteret New 5/10 Gothenburg (S) Underground Date Changed SUPERMODEL (UK) - Fire Records/Border 4/9 Vaxjo (S) Elvagarden New Venue 6/9 Ludvika (S) Sankan New Venue ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The complete Luger Tour List can be found on the Scandinavian Indie WWW : http://www.lysator.liu.se/~chief/luger.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------- Date: Thu, 22 Aug 1996 05:00:52 +0200 (MET DST) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Motor Tour List _Update_ [21-Aug-96] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scandinavian Indie Motor Tour List UPDATE Scandinavian Indie August 21st, 1996 by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCANDINAVIAN: Bazooka!
