Indeed! After all, what Erik is doing is free promotion for the band!
But I have noticed that there are bands/labels/publishers who, for
some odd reason, are paranoid about letting people hear their music
before it is actually available. This is find a bit strange, because
as far as I understand getting the word out would only help to
generate a good 'buzz' about the band even before their release! Oh
well... perhaps MCA want to use their own 'traditional' marketing and
promoting channels rather than us indiekids... :)

alright, we obviously look at this from differet angles, but that's fully
ok with me. i am not able to listen to music only focusing on *the music*.
for me it's being able to relate to everything that comes with the music
(the lyrics, the band itself, the cover of the record etc.) of course, i
am able to make exceptions, but too often i have been put down, by a band
being complete jerk-offs, writing dumb lyrics etc. it took me quite an
effort to be able to listen to weezer because of their *really* cheesy
references to heavy metal and general "crazy" attitude, where they are
making a point of showing off how unserious they are toward their music.
anyway, you could probably be pointing out that i am missing out on a lot
of good bands because of the way i look at it, but so what, there are a
million good bands out there that i have never even heard of so i might as
well go check them out first..=20

no it shouldn't, but it does! it'a about a band being "fortunate enough"
and picked up by some major-label talent-scout and voila!, you have tons
of money to back you up and promote you in a way you never would have
been able to if this guy from sony (or whatever) wouldn't have liked and
believed they could make money on you.
it's big business and that's what's so sickening.

see, you are taking a stand and buying records from smaller stores instead
of Ahlens. and it's the same reason i rather spend my money on the new
eric's trip split-single released on me too! records instead of the latest
warner-released flaming lips cd, even if i just as much would like to hear
the flaming lips disc. well.., maybe when i find it on sale somewhere i
might actually pick it up.
and, in case you didn't know, indie-released records are usually a lot
cheaper than the ones on majors. a) because indies don't spend half
their budget promoting the stuff (yes, you and i, as consumers, are
paying to see posters, stickers, dolls etc. of ace of base in every larger
record store..! :) ) and b) the indies are a lot more low-key (they don't
have to make sure to pay a lot of wages every month) and it's a way of
competing keeping their prices low(er). still many of the record-stores
charge *more* for imported indie releases :( . a way to go around this
it's always possible to order the records right from the source..

yes, but then it's up to us to start spreading the word, right? and i
agree i don't know anything about your record collection, what i based my
question on was the bands you listened below..

This is good news. I'm sure that I'm not the only listmember based in
London. Or maybe I am? If anyone else is going to be going to any of these
shows I'd be really happy to meet up as there is a good chance that I'll
be on my own, my friends not having particularly good taste in music.

Um, let's see. Cloudberry Jam - Providing the atmosphere; Honeymoons -
Domestic; Shredhead - Melting Pot; Daybehaviour - Adored and NONSVOL2, a
North of No South sampler featuring songs by 9 different North of No
South bands. Shredhead are not really my cup of tea at the moment (these
things change) but I really like, at the very least, the rest of it.
I'm particularly intrigued by Ray Wonder, Pinko Pinko and Colonel Blimp
from the sampler. I know a bit about Ray Wonder but can anyone fill me in
on Pinko Pinko and Colonel Blimp?

Nope. I'm still here. Well not really _in_ London but in Hertford, just
north of London, I'm about ten minutes outside the M25. Would love to join
anyone going to good gigs. And I have a few Swedish friends in London who
might wanna join too. Drop me a line if anything is up!
BTW, haven't found any info here 'bout Swedish bands in London. Where's
the best place to look? (Apart from TO)
Oh - we just missed the Wannadies last week, think they played the Astoria
on the 2nd of May. Found out the day after. Bummer!

Subject: Popsicle review 8 may, Gronan
OK, another gig, another review.
I was one of the big hoard of kids who went to Grona Lund for the Popsicle
gig yesterday. Firstly, Fredrik complained that it was evil cold (which its
was, maybe +3 or so). Though he said that they played in -5 once, in Pitea :)
They went on at 20.00, when it was still bright and sunny outside, an
unusual surrounding for Popsicle, another unusual thing was that the medium
age of the audience was 16-17! OK, i think it's fun that they have new
generation of followers, they deserve it (or was it just drunken teenagers
out for some partying in beautiful springtime Stockholm?!).
But this also means that the kids go bonzo wild on Not Forever, but haven't
heard many of the earlier songs. OK, if anyone wonders who the old fart
screaming "Slow!" down by the front was, yeah, it was me ;)
On the gig as such: Good, but not the best i've heard from them. They only
had 40 minutes, no "extranummer". A cool thing as practiced during the
latest tour, they did "Soft" with the fake ending. I don't know if you've
noticed it, but they leave the stage one after one, but the music
continues. At the end Arvid is left jamming on the bass, and it gets to you
that something is not right! :P
I wonder how they blend in the studio track on the live song?
Kinda ressembles the way Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream ended their gigs.
But at that time it was to show off the sequencer thing, which was
completely new.
Oh, and the played the new single, which is confirmed to be called "Dusty
Roads". It's good, i told you earlier.

Yes! Definitely worth checking out! (Oh yeah, hee hee, I happen to play
in one these groups... so sorry :-)).
Dada Girl come from Nokia, Finland (near Tampere). Kind of artsy, Love-ly,
powerpop. Antti the singer has an amazing voice. The bassist sports long
hair. Rock!
Coo are a five-piece from Tampere with a good-looking lead singer and
a rhythm guitarist who owns hockey goaltender equipment (doesn't wear it on
stage, though) playing dronish guitar pop. FX pedals galore! Comparisons
(more or less off-base) have included The Verve, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized,
Ride, VU. Shoegazing is definitely _not_ the word here. A cd-single soon to
be out on Tangerine Records.
Oh yeah, and the Club Splendid DJs are famous for playing old-skool indie
pop as well as new smokin' jungle tunes. Bliss!

that's not a bad idea, Kimmo, and it would also serve the purpose of
letting everyone else know how the tape is progressing on it's journey. :-)
I'm on the list for all 3 tapes going around right now, and it would be
cool to have an idea how much longer I've got to wait!

Then they are rather stupid, I think. I can't think of a label that
doesn't do SOME sort of promotion (sending promos to radio stations,
magazines like SPIN, or Alternative Press, etc). Why on earth would they
consider that type of promotion (which costs a lot of money, btw) yet not
let some guy put one song on a compilation tape that maybe 2 dozen people
are going to hear? ESPECIALLY when that song will probably induce at
least half those people to go out and purchase the album when it finally
comes out?? It's beyond me. It is absolutely free promotion, just like
Kimmo said, nothing more. If MCA is planning on sending Fidget promos to
even one magazine, then they are total hypocrites (if they ultimately
don't let Erik use the song, that is). And I will be forced to believe
that perhaps there is some truth to what Toby said about corporate big
labels trying to undermine the indie underground (don't remember the
exact wording......)

Are you the good looking one?! ;) Anyway, this sounds very promising. I
totally dig Verve, Sp3, Ride etc... Tell us when the single is out!

Well, some "immediate" impressions of tonight's happenings
here in cold Lulea, Sweden:
Picabo,
Had their moments, at their best they reminded me of the Sea
and Cake, at their worst they're just generic swedish indie
pop, which isn't too bad after all. One of their members
commented "hey, like your t-shirt". Oh well. A big + was that
it was indoors.
Kent,
Well, it was real cold outside, and their music wasn't good
enough too keep me from going inside. In fact, I think they're
pretty damn worthless. Where Tomas Oberg and Bob Hund do
everything right, Kent do it completely wrong. Their lyrics
just sound like some really bad 9th grade swedish class poems.
Pathetic. Just as pathetic as that video they play by some
pre-Kent band on Z-TV pop & indie. If you don't believe me now,
you will in 10 years.
Pineforest Crunch,
Positive surprise, I missed the first 30 minutes though due to
unsoberness. Well, it was warm, energenetic and really energetic.
I expected the Cardiganesque boredom and got a something completely
different. Sure, the girl is cute, but the guy who plays the electric
guitar is just infinitely cuter. That girl giving the finger to her
band members just come out as "fuck you, i'll hug you later" though,
kinda silly if you ask me. Thumbs up anyway! (And it was indoors! yay!)
To sum it up, it was just too damn fucking cold at night for this
kinda thing.

Hmm I have no info at all on Colonel Blimp, but there is an old interview
with Pinko Pinko on the Scan-Indie web-pages. A new single was supposed
to be released in April, but I haven't heard a word about it, so my guess
is that it has been delayed. I know that Kristofer Samuelsson has a
far better contact with NONS than I do - Kristofer, do you have some
info on what's happening at NONS at the moment?

Heh heh, I talked to Jennie yesterday again (she's resting at home because
she's sick, and they have a gig tonight) and she said that the sound
technician Honeymoons had with them had a long and funny story about the
incident. She wasn't up to telling me yesterday, but apparently the
whole place (Dublin Castle) went silent when Liam walked through the
doors... well well.. I hope I get to hear the whole story tonight!

You might want to go and see Souls on May 22nd at Astoria, London. They
are playing together with Bush.

There is a page for Swedish bands touring outside Sweden on the Scandinavian
Indie Web, though at the moment, I have received extremely little information
to add to it. Today the page contains info about the (now delayed) Komeda
and Eggstone gig at Wonderwall, and Souls (w/Bush) at Astoria. I have
contacted a couple of labels and reminded them to send their gig lists

Busty - (EMI) and Sive (EMI) played at Herrgar'n in Linkoping yesterday.
Sive played a short set, and voices in the audience afterwards
gave the gig a bad review. "Lousy stage performance" was the
most usual remark. Busty on the other hand was a success. Before
their appearence a lot of people thought of them as a big hype, but
afterwards, these thoughts had changed. Unfortunately the evening
ended with someone in one of the bands using a fire-extinguisher
and a stolen jacket (which they got back fortunately), and both

Cardigans - (Trampolene) are working on their new album, that is going to be
released this autumn, right now. Their last album "Life" have
passed the 1.000.000 copies sold mark, and it keeps on selling.

Ceilidh Productions - will release a compilation CD with everything owner
Ola Hermanson has ever made on the label. This means
tracks from, among others, Bear Quartet, Brainpool,
Cardigans, HappyDeadMen, Stevepops and Suredo. Almost
everything is ready and the release date is set to
sometime in June. Cat.No: CEI 039. A compilation with
old surf-pop from sold out vinyl records is also

Coach Bob - is the new name that the former members of the band Suredo
(all but Mikael Myrnerts) and Cloudberry Jam drummer Per
Bystrom have chosen for their new band. They are currently
rehearsing a lot, and hopefully, we'll see them live soon!

Drug - (Ceilidh) is a band from Vadstena. Ceilidh is releasing their debut
album "The Quest of The Source of Sentimentality" right now!

HappyDeadMen - (Trampolene) are recording new material (which you already
know if you keep an eye on this column) and everything is
planned to be ready this summer. The new album will probably
be released in Asia first (this autumn) and next spring in

Naked - (Trampolene) have received a very good response in Europe. They
currently top radio lists in Holland and Germany and are also
now ready for a UK (and probably German) release through Polygram.

Riviera - (Trampolene) is the latest addition to the label. The band has
spent time in the studio recording. In June it is time for the
mixing, and singles will probably be released this autumn. The
band is fronted by Claes Molander (from The Varlets) and sounds
like "a mix between all hit songs ever made", says Ola Hermanson
at Trampolene. "Phil Spector, Sam Cooke, The Rutles and Beach

Salt - (MVG/Island) came back to Stockholm tuesday this week after finishing
their second US tour. Nina Ramsby already appeared on ZTV's program
"Tryck Till" friday. Their manager Jeff says that the band has grown
a lot during the past month and that their performance has become
really strong. Not included in their set before, the song "So" has
now been added, although it is different from the CD version. A new
video has also been shot for the song, which means that Island has
finally decided to release it as their new single, together with
non-album tracks. The release date is not yet set. All of this has
meant that the new version of the "Honour Me" video that you have
read about in this column before, has been put on hold. Tour news:
an opening slot on a summer tour with Everclear, Space Hog and
Tracey Bonham is available, and Salt has been proposed to fill it,
though Everclear has yet to decide if they want Salt or not. This
is one of the biggest US summer tours - all three bands are really
happening in America right now, and it would be a great tour for

Sonic Surf City - (Trampolene) released a single "Let's Make Love" a few
weeks ago, which got 4 "plus" (out of 5) in swedish
evening paper Aftonbladet. Now, the album "Surf Don't
Walk" is released on May 15th on an Europe/Asia basis
but negotiatons with US labels are being held. The
release party will be held at Kammaren in Norrkoping
on May 16th. The band then plays in Uppsala, Klubb
Dacke (24/5), Stockholm, Studion (25/5) (_free_),
Linkoping, Herrgar'n (30/5) and Uppsala again at

Unimedia Productions - who were the people behind bringing Cloudberry Jam
and Honeymoons to the Dublin Castle club in London
reports that several indie promotors are begging
them to bring Cloudberry Jam to London again, but
it all depends on the band's future plans and their
label North Of No South. They also report that
Honeymoons managed to make some really influential

Well, actually it was quite a while since I spoked to them. Anyway, I think
that Per from NONS is on this list so it's better he speaks for NONS. Bu t I
can tell you what I know:

Concerning Pinko Pinko I have no further information but Colonel Blimp I
know that they are planning to release a new fullength-CD in septemper
called "Cynosure". Colonel Blimp actually have their own homepage
(http://www.cs.umu.se:80/~mnlmla/cb.html). It's not so big but it's there.
Concerning Ray Wonder I know that they are recording a new album in
Tambourine Studios (Eggstone) at the moment. To be released after the
summer, I assume.

The "billetservice" on the web does not help me at all, everytime that I
reserve tickets for a show, that service e-mails me to say I only have three
days to pick up my tickets in Norway.... or is there any way around this?

The Creeps,
Played well and everything, but they didn't do "it" for me.
KSMB,
Surprisingly good, I expected something rather dull, these
guys are really enthusiastic about playing and it's clear
that they like to be on stage.
The Confusions,
Real good indie-pop. Thumbs up. Cute girls on keyboards
doesn't make in any worse ;-)
I missed aBLe, they played at the same time as KSMB
and Blake Carringtons played at the same time as the
Confusions. Oh well.
