I actually heard them for the first time last week (live on Z-TV), and
really liked what I heard. Like someone (Per?) mentioned, they do sound
a bit like Sammy, but at least the song I heard (the single I guess - She's
Left Alone Again or something like that) was faster and more up-beat than
your average Sammy song.

Beat Butchers contest - on the WWW will end sooner than previously stated.
Due to changed vacation-plans for Jojo, who handles
the whole thing, the last date to send in your
replies to the questions will be March 28th
(instead of March 31st), and to manage to get the
winners their prizes, you now have to enter your
snail mail address when sending in your answers
(or you'll have to wait until May). Those of you
who have already sent in your answers will be
notified through e-mail.
Hultsfred Festival 96 - announced yesterday at the "release party" in
Stockholm, the headliners for this year's festival:

Salt - wants to enter the studio as soon as possible, to record new
material for a release (album?) planned for November 1996. But
first they have to end the current US tour (mid March) and go
back to the US for yet another tour in April! (Source: Expressen)
Scandinavian Indie contest - have also changed the last date for sending
in your "found the hidden page" message.
Due to my own personal vacation at the end
of February, and because it seems like it's
pretty hard to find that hidden page, the
last date to send in your message have moved
to March 28th. And the one person (!) who has
already found the hidden page, will win one
of the t-shirts, for his fine work, and
the rest will be prizes in the (now easier)
contest (that means, it's a lot easier to
find the link to the hidden page now...).

Just saw a video on ZTV with Tripping Daisy... well, I just wanted to ask -
will there be no end of Husker Du, Bob Mould, Sugar, Starmarket-sounding
bands? Well, now when Sugar is out of the picture, maybe there's room for
them...

Hi there.
I have a question which doesn't have anything to do with scan indie really,
but I thought you might help me.
I have a friend in the UK who is going to visit Goteborg and she asked me if
I knew any good record shop there...I don't, but I told her I'd ask around
for some information.
This has a little connection to scan indie since the CD:s she's going to buy
are stuff like Popsicle and Cardigans.

In Gothenburg we have Skivhugget and Bengans (the cheapest record shops in
Sweden ??? 129kr/CD ). Skivhugget is in my opinion better, but at Bengans
you can sometimes find fun vinyl. Take tram 3, 4 or 9 to Masthuggstorget
and your there, for Bengans go one more stop.

So were you there? Per and me were, anyway, and a possible new member

I heard them on P3 of all places, or maybe it was Bandit. They sound
like they'll be good fun. I know nothing whatsoever about Punnet
though -- any word on them?

I went to see Vinterviken with some friends and a couple of weeks ago and to
my surprise I heard and saw parts of I'm left alone again. One of the
characters watched TV and there it was - the video, but only some seconds.
That was the best part of the movie...
I heard somewhere that it was Therapy? who told Punnet that they should call
themselves Punnet, don't know if it's true though.

I always go to CD-specialisten (ex Rockhouse), when i'm in Gbg. I don't
remember the street, but it's downtown. Bengans and Skivhugget are also
supposed to be OK, haven't been there, though.

I went to see Popsicle at Gino instead, and actually, Fredrik was wearing a
Superchunk T-shirt. Midway in the gig, he asked: "Who have seen Superchunk
tonight?" Obviously very few at Gino had, since everybody were at Gino
waiting for Popsicle to arrive! ;P
Anyway, they did a great show, and had even altered the endings of some
songs. Hell, every song they played was great, not a weak spot!
Due to Fredriks late arrival, everything was very late, i missed my night
bus and was home past 2 am.
For those who missed it, go see them next week at Handels (tuesday, i think?!)

A West Side Fabrication, Backfisch, Blissful, Cloudberry Jam, Drain, Drowners,

A West Side Fabrication - have loosened the "no more bands" belt, and
_will_ sign one new band to their label shortly.
The owner, Jocke, started to listen through
demo tapes right after christmas, and has found
a couple that are "now on the window ledge" -
that is, demos that he likes. Bands who are
interested are hereby encouraged to send their
demo tapes to the label now! Address:

Jocke also said that the Swedish/Japanese music
market is now "too much". Every Japanese label
is looking for their own "Swedish band", which
will result in the old "only the best survives",
Jocke ponders.
And finally, if you have trouble finding West Side
records _outside Sweden_, contact the label
directly (the address above)! They send records
around the world, somewhat like mailorder.
Backfisch - (West Side) are still thinking about whether to continue as a
band or not. Unfortunately.
Blissful - (West Side) release a new EP called "I am a Wreck" on monday
Feburary 26th, with five brand new songs. The label is currently
hoping to sign the band for distribution outside Scandinavia.
Cloudberry Jam - (North Of No South) have moved the release date for their
forthcoming single "Another Moment Follows" to February
19th, 1996. Release date for the album, "Providing The
Atmosphere" is set to March 18th. That album is already
pre-ordered in 25.000 copies in Japan.
Drain - (MVG) 's records will be released outside the Nordic countries and
Estonia by Warner, says the licence agreement between the two. The
band will also be the opening act for Fear Factory in London, who
are starting their tour of the UK.
Drowners - (Speech/West Side) is the next West Side band to be released in
Japan. February 21st is the date for their latest CD "Destroyer".
Kent - will appear tomorrow (friday February 16th) on "Inf|r Grammisgalan"
on TV 4 at 21:30.
Mouth - (Telegram) recently kicked Peter Bohman (bass) and have played
with a stand-in, Elias Modigh, since. The reasons behind it all
they say, is that the personal chemistry just didn't work. They
now hope that Elias will join the band full-time, because everything
works like a charm with him in the band. Elias is only 25 years old,
but has been in the business a long time. The US release date for
their CD "Hole Of Your Head" on Reprise is now set for March 15th.
AND tomorrow (friday, 16/2) they'll play _live_ on PTL on ZTV
starting 16:00, so there's your chance to catch the new guy on bass.
Nausea Hits - Therese Johansson's (Sindy Kills Me) newly started band has
been signed to Warner/Chappell Scandinavia with a song
contract.
Petrol - from V{ster}s, that we have heard so much about on the Scandinavian
Indie mailing list, were finally announced as signed by Warner/
Chappell Scandinavia.
Popundret - (West Side) are now also signed for Japan, and will release
their CD "Montmartre 15 40" there on February 21st. Hopes are
high, due to very good reviews in the Japan press. The band
is also extremely popular in Germany (!).
This Perfect Day - (MVG) have been in China, and appeared on MTV Asia and
Channel V. Their album, "Don't Smile" has sold over
35.000 copies in China.

I couldn't quite believe it when Per told me Popsicle were playing at
Gino, because I'd already seen Fredrik and (him being Fredrik) not
been surprised that he was there...

This might be of limited interest to you, but it seems that the old
synthpop group Alphaville are alive and kicking. They're even coming over
here to play some live shows. Ain't life strange?!

Wow! Hey, the strange and awesome Enema & Gejonte!!! For you who don't know
them, they are an offshoot from En Halvkokt I Folie, although a million
times cooler. EHIF use to be very cheesy, but E&G are sooo far out.
They only released one tape, AFAIK, but it contains the most weird songs, a
bit like Arvid Tuba. Titles like "Vi heter Kaj och Jonas", "Upp i ottan och
ut pa stan", "Hello my name is John, i am the crazy one", a version of
"Doda rattor pa det trevliga barnhemmet" etc ;)
They also collaborated with Cold Meat Industry, and released some songs on
compilations, under various names. The epic track "Germans reminded of
their nazi past" is one of them.
So check them out on sunday! Too bad it's only one hour, and together with
two other acts.

yes, both superchunk and seam were incredible! seam were very, very
anti-rock. they looked like pharmasists, didn't move much yet they
put on a really emotional show consisting of both noise and silence.
very good. superchunk were, well, superchunk. which isn't by no means
bad! i mean, they did what they were expected to do: rock out! they were
amazingly energic and their songs sounded just as great live as on record.
sadly, they had stop playing shortly after eleven and i found they chose
to play quite a lot of, hmm, unexpected songs.. overall, one of the best
shows i've ever seen.
but. (and here i go again) it was a real bummer to read the review of the
show in today's dagens nyheter. it was obvious the guy had never heard of
seam before and i have serious doubts he even had heard superchunk as
well.. he described them both as college rock..!! f*ck i wish he knew
what he was talking about! the connells and live are typical college rock
bands, superchunk is definitely not college rock!! it's like saying that
souls and fireside are typical university rock bands over here!!!!!

i must admit "she's left alone again" doesn't sound very much like
sammy.. but i swear to god naked did sound like sammy when i saw them live
last fall. a lot less up-beat (more slack) etc.
about punnet. i saw at least two copies of a cd-single at pet sounds by
that band. they were both in the "used" rack and were priced at about 25
SKr.. not too expensive if anyone is interested to check them out.

Yesterday night I saw Salt at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles.
As usual their performance was really solid and Nina Ramsby
rocked like hell. I think the audience was impressed. They
place was sold out, but a lot of people had come for the
other band on the bill, That Dog (really cool band with
one of the girls from The Rentals + two other girls + a boy).
Nina's between songs speaking consisted of various 'Thank you',
'This is a new song', 'It is on our album Ascultate' and so on.
Most interesting audience response was 'Bajen Bars och rakade
brudar'.
Salt also performed live on KROQ and KCRW, two radio stations in L.A.
On KROQ the dj was a total disaster and the interview was really
boring. They played 'Bluster' live. I was in a discussion class
during the KCRW performance so it was kind of hard to follow it,
but I think they recorded several songs live in their studio
which they played during the interview and probably will play in the
future too.
'Ascultate' will be released in the U.S. in the beginning of
March (I think the fifth).

He had that t-shirt on him here in Linkoping yesterday as well. :-)
I didn't ask him about it though, ha ha (?).
Anyway, I just thought I'd tell a bit about my Popsicle/Pineforest Crunch
evening. It was boring. Okay, I know I'm going to get flames for this,
but really, Popsicle is a bunch of egos.
They turned down the interview by sending down one of the guards with the
words "they are really too tired for that now", but still managed to party
on until the place closed.
And the crowd was just wrong. 280 people that never visits the place
on regular "live band" nights, who couldn't get either band to come back
to play an extra set, and who went home immediately when the gig was
over, making the place close earlier than usual. Heavens...
Pineforest Crunch was nice, but I can honestly say that I only liked
(ie. liked a lot) two songs they performed. They're just too tight!
It's a complete waste of time to try to find one glitch in their music
or vocals. Asa's (who sings) voice is unbeleivable, don't get me wrong,
but all of it is just too "correct".
She told me later that they have some sort of an "Internet fan-club",
run by two guys, but she had no idea where one could find it. Maybe
a Lycos search would give some information? Anyway, she's a lot
shorter than I thought (from their video) :-) And she didn't even
smile when I commented her "Sorry for staring, but your eyes are so
beautiful" that she said to Peter Siepen on ZTV on the program "Jag, Peter".
I guess she'd like to forget about that. :-) Oh, and they're _not_
on Polygram, but Polar.

Got a demo tape in the mail the other day from a group called "Shallow".
The band consists of three members based in Gothenburg;
David Sundqvist (guitar, vocals)
Nicolas Janco (bass, drums, drum-machine)
Annica Silvonen (vocals)
Their current setting (unchanged since autumn 1995) grows when they
play live with yet another guitar and bass. The demo, called "Shallow",
was recorded last november at Chess Studios.
I didn't follow their advice, to listen to the demo through headphones,
at first, but when I did, I understood why. The demo is recorded on an
8-track roll-tape recorder (is that really the english word for it?).
Here's my honest (no I didn't get any money with the tape :-)) review of
their demo:
Shallow - "Shallow" demo, November 1995. Time: 16.25.
1. "Soave"
When I first listened to the tape, I immediately thought of Lush! Only
because of the vocals though. Dreamy, effect-filled, light and almost
whispering, Annica sings about "Atomic sky" and "Cosmic light". The music
made me dig up an album with U2, just to check if I was mistaken, but I
was not. Clear similarities to those dazzling U2 electric guitars one can
hear on "Joshua Tree" here and there, but especially at the orgasmic guitar-
filled fading end of the song, only here they paint the ceiling _and_ the
walls. Noisier, buzzier. And together with the bass and drums, it's all
extremely beautiful and sounds remarkably professional.
2. "Close Your Eyes"
Screaming guitars, alarming and noisy, fills my headphones when Close Your
Eyes starts. Then the vocals hits me. Annica and David together. Annica
in her light, floating and whispering voice and David's voice like a low,
yet soft and light breeze. You guessed it. I too thought of Slowdive. And
Bizarre. Together with the rattling, effect-box-filled wall of noise from
the guitars and drums that sound like they were placed in a garage outside
the studio, throughout the whole song, it's a perfect match. No trace of
U2. No trace of Lush. But a lot of Slowdive. Slowdive. My personal heroes.
This tape was sent to the right address.
3. "The Twin Of Theirs"
My first word was "Wow!". Not thinking it, but I actually said it. Floating,
dreamy guitars that clears my head. "Effect-box" is written all over the
room, with David and Annica singing, though this time, David voice is
high up, singing together with Annica, and at first I wasn't sure that it
was such a good idea, because sometimes it just doesn't sound right, but
taking advantage of listening through headphones, I could listen to either
David's voice or Annica's, by only using the right or left headphone, and
by doing that, I found David's voice to be perfect, and in the same way,
I found Annica's voice to be perfect too! It's just when they're together
it doesn't sound quite right. They're using a drum-machine here, that I
can't but relate to Depeche Mode's "tuh"-sounding drum. I'm not very fond
of drum-machines, and I think it should've been left out.
4. "Hyper"
Hyper takes Shallow across the border into another music-zone. Heavy,
rattling, jagged edge-like guitars with siren-sounding background guitars
evolves into middle sections with not as heavy but just as rattling
guitars, filled with Annica's _amazingly_ beautiful voice, and here she's
definitely close to Cocteau Twins' Liz. Her voice travels over high
mountains and down low valleys, in such a clear tone that it makes me
just melt on the spot. The combination is brilliant. The bass has a clear
path to travel, and the drums makes me shiver. It's always hard to say
something about drums, but Nicolas really is good at playing them here.
Everything is so terribly good. "Side by side, close your eyes, take my
hand, to fantasy...".
To sum it all up: Shallow is fantastic! Out of four songs, I love three,
which will settle in my tape deck, and stay there for a long time. I can't
really grasp that they are not signed (or are they?) to a label. And what
about their background? This is clearly the work of people with previous
experience, yet I don't recognize their names. (Though in the picture they
sent with the tape, David (I think) reminds me of Trent Reznor (!) :-)).
With (to me) references from Lush, Slowdive and Cocteau Twins, they just
can't go wrong. Beautiful vocals, fantastic effect-filled guitar-walls,
drums I once wished I could play and a bass that matches everything.
Remember where you heard it first. :-)

Some more update:
Petrol h}ller just nu p} att v{lja mellan kontrakt fr}n Telegram, Sony och
Disel. Disel ska s{tta upp en underetikett med inriktning p} popmusik och
vill ha Petrol som f|rsta band. Hur som helst borde det inte vara fel att
r{kna med en singel inom ett par m}nader och troligen spelningar p} n}gra
av sommarens festivaler.
In english: Petrol is currently choosing between contracts from Telegram,
Sony and Diesel. Diesel is setting up a sub-label with swedish "pop music"
and wants Petrol as their first band. Anyway, count on a single within the
next few months, and a few gigs on festivals this summer.

Sorry to hear that, it was just the opposite to Gino. I think they played
their longest set ever - 75 min - cause normally Popsicle do really short
sets. Their last tour was 45-50 min, and during this tour, the gigs i've
heard of are 55-60 min.

I think I overdosed on Salt this weekend. On Saturday they played
a small 'in-store' (but outdoors!) set in Costa Mesa south of L.A.
Henrik(?) Kumlin and his Z-TV posse were filming the event.
The set was followed by CD and poster signing.
Later that day the played at Club 369 in Fullerton (close to Disneyland).
The half packed club had to suffer three mediocre noisy bands before
Salt came on stage and at that point at least my ears were pretty sore.
Nina wore a cute 'Belsebub 666' T-shirt. Their gig was good but not
top notch, nothing special happened.
The next U.S. single will according to Nina probably be 'Honour Me'.

Cardigans - (Trampolene) gigs on Iceland with Ray Wonder was noted by evening
paper Expressen Fredag, February 16th. They also noted that Nina
Persson (vocals in Cardigans) _have had_ a long relationship with
one of the guys in Ray Wonder, and are wondering what's going to
happen.
Hedningarna - have released a CD called "Fire" on Tristar Music (Sony) in the
US under the new name "The Heathens". The CD is a "best of"
from their two earlier albums "Kaksi" and "Tr{".

Roskilde Festival 96 - revealed a couple of names for this summer's festival
this weekend. Ready for the festival are: David Bowie,
Edwyn Collins, Flaming Lips, The Amps, Ash, Heather
Nova, Pulp, Garbage, Hotel Hunger (DK), Baal (DK),
Merzy (DK) and Caroline Henderson (DK). The festival
starts on June 27th and ends June 30th.

Record Releases - noted last week includes (Albums): April Tears "Sing Lee",
Honeymoons "A Day Like Today", Sludge Nation "Wisehead EP".
(Singles): Contrappunto "E Assim Vou".
Salt - (MVG) touring and touring the US. Their last gig in New York, March
14th at Brownie's will be a kind of release party. Their US label,
Island, have bought the house for the event, so tickets will probably
not be available. Martin Carlsson, from swedish evening paper
Expressen, has been to Salt's shows in Seattle and LA, and came
together with Z-TV to a free show at the Tower Records/Lab in Costa
Mesa yesterday, which means that Z-TV will show some sort of segment
soon. Keep your eyes open!
Teddybears - (MVG) will release their first CD "We Are Teddybears" in Japan.
The only difference will be one picture in the booklet, where
the Japanese label wanted to see the members play golf, so they
took an old picture, cut out the "real people's" faces and
put the Teddybears members' faces there instead.

Sounds pretty .. hmm, I don't know. They want demo-pop-groups to party with?
Umm.. anyone have a copy of that fanzine? And where is the place where
neither the band nor the fan club writes anything?

Looks like it's "Him". I read it somewhere (I just can't find it again),
but I think it was some sort of record release or something like that?
