Dunno about the other two and, um, it seems I don't know too much about what's going on in Estonia these days either, but I do know that I received a parcel from Tallinn the other day, containing the "Hello" comp. tape from a while back, the Dallas tape "Raj Kapoor" which came out in November last year, and also the brand new Borax tape! I realize there might be some people out there who are not familiar with these bands so I'll try and elaborate a bit (and I guess this is going to be long): DALLAS come from Tallinn, and they've been around for a good few years now, it seems. They have a couple of tape releases behind them by now, the ones I have are a split-tape release with Zahir (the Dallas side was called "Dubbing Good Morning") and the new 8-song tape which in my opinion blows away almost anything I've heard by an Estonian band, ever. Their sound could be described as sometimes fragile, sometimes noisy, often tremendously catchy and almost always somehow foreign - as in exotic, not frighteningly alien or anything:) The vocal duties are handled mainly by, hm, a girl whose name escapes at the time of this writing, but really she does have the sweetest gentle voice, occasionally reminding me of Sinead O'Connor even. (The other vocalist is Holger - also on guitar - whose half spoken/half sung mutterings I find somewhat harder to stomach.) Dallas are a good example of a band that I find extremely easy to respect: they are never afraid of experimenting or being noisy and weird but they still can write the most heartbreakingly cute pop songs when they like. They sound so innocent and genuine. BTW, the band a now on a break as their singer just had a baby, but Holger informs me that a new ep should be coming out in a few months' time. Here's hoping... BORAX are also very good, although slightly different in sound. Their brand new 12-song tape "C" (if I understand correctly) features some of the greatest tunes The Boo Radleys never wrote between "Everything's Alright" and "Giant Steps" - I mean, I've never heard anyone sound as much like Sice as Leslie Laasner does. Unfortunately, it would seem that Borax also have something of a heavy metal penchant, judging by some of the riffs they use in certain songs... However, there are plenty of real gems amongst these 12 tracks so as to make "C" great value for money. Okay, okay, I'll quit right here. If anyone would like further information, do email me! And don't forget about the tape chain! Now, a question: does anyone know, or can anyone speculate if the Cardigans being on Minty Fresh now means that their back catalog will now be available over here in the States? Do you think they'll re-release "Emmerdale" and/or "Life"? I have neither of these, but I really want to get "Emmerdale". The problem is I don't know if I should wait and see if Minty Fresh will put it out, or if I should special-order it as an import, or trade for it with Erik (when his funds look a little healthier :-) ANy ideas??? ------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jan 1995 02:46:33 +0000 From: John Boqvist Subject: Allen and so Hi you all! > Err..nothing, as I am at the University computer room right now. It was a pleasure to see that some people appreciate the wondrous Allen Clap. I can just highly recommend this tremendous piece of "lo-fi"? pop music. The drums recorded in a parking lot, need I say more. And, why do sting suck, is that a title or what? Bye from John-0, just waiting for stevepops at studion, Superchunk (finally) at Studion, Foetus (again) at studion and the Naked party at K (2/2, just maybe...) ------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jan 1996 14:17:20 +0200 (EET) From: trkisa@uta.fi (Kimmo Saaskilahti) Subject: a couple of thingies Hello there! I found a couple of interesting CD's the other day - a second hand CD store was selling some of their stock with a 50% reduction, and I was lucky enough to find the following: Addis Black Widow: The Battle of Adwa I had heard one track ("Innocent") on the radio around Christmas time, and as soon as I saw this CD I grabbed it! (The 30 Fmk price helped too, along with a recommendation in the Berrykin fanzine). And I was pleasantly surprised - this is the best hip-hop/trip-hop/whatever groovy stuff I have heard for a long time! It's on the Swedish Breakin' Beat label, if memory serves (don't have the CD around at the moment). Could someone out there give some info about this group? Is this their first album? That "Innocent" track rules my world at the moment! Tommy 16: Shauna This was another great surprise, as I had only heard one track by them before: it was "Radio Girl" on some West Side compilation CD; I remember it being quite OK, but nothing to write home about. This album is however much better!! Soundwise it has some similarity with The Bear Quartet's "Everybody Else", it's kind of relaxed and laidback most of the time. The similarity is kind of understadable, as both albums were done together with Mr. K. Nasten up in Skelleftea. I can't help comparing this lot to Teenage Fanclub, and why not Big Star and Replacements, which have probably influenced the Fannies too. So, a nice surprise, and only 20 Fmk!! :) I also got a CD which has Swedish bands covering Prince's Purple Rain album in its entirety, but I really haven't had an opportunity to listen to it properly, so more about that later, perhaps. Melony are: Peter Kvint (guitar & vocals) M}ns Eriksson (drums & vocals) Gunnar Nord‚n (bass) (c) 1996 Scandinavian Indie If the answer is "A." it was answered by the group as a whole, if the answer is "ST." it was their sound technician who answered the question and if the answer is "UW." it was their manager who answered the question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE GIG TONIGHT? A. This was the best gig we've had so far! It was really great, and no pressure at all. Not like at Hannas and at Gino, where we filled in for Cinnamon when they should have played there with Honey Is Cool and Singer, in Stockholm. Everyone was there! Popsicle, Wannadies, journalists.. Enough to make everyone really nervous! GN. My cord got stuck on Peter's guitar! But I just went over to him and removed it. PK. Yeah! And you were pretty cool doing it too! Ha ha. GN. Well, slow and easy is the name! ME. After the first song I really wanted more bass, but it took a while before our sound technician noticed me... ST. I know I know.. I always stand with my head looking down at the mixing table. ME. But one of the guys working here saw that I wanted something, so he helped out. Q. SO IS THIS THE FIRST TIME YOU'VE PLAYED WITHOUT THAT KIND OF PRESSURE? PK. No, we've played in Uppsala at Kalmar Nation and in Gothenburg at Underground, without journalists. But we really enjoyed the gig tonight. We could relax, you know? Q. WHAT SONGS DID YOU PLAY? PK. We played 'My Corona', 'Skycracker', 'Barbra Streisand Nose', 'November Blues', 'Supersonic Baby', 'Silicon Soul', 'Dial Heaven', 'Wearing Shades on Rainy Days', 'Mirror on The Freeway', and the two extra numbers were 'Stagediver' and 'Swoop Soup'. Q. WHEN DID MELONY START? PK. Almost two years ago. In March 1994. But we played "indie pop" back then, and the record labels never wanted to hear it. Q. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT PLAYING? ME. I'm a music producer. Sound technician. And I also work with animated pictures, as dub-producer. GN. Music producer. PK. I work with animated pictures and I'm a music producer as well. And I'm moving right now. That's hard work! Ha ha! Q. ANYTHING YOU HAVE PRODUCED THAT ONE MIGHT KNOW? PK. I'm the producer for Pineforest Crunch together with Gunnar. Gunnar is also the producer for Sive (on EMI). They sound like Brandgul, heavy and with swedish lyrics. Q. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR NAME? PK. We used to be called "Honey" but you know there are a lot of bands using that word in their names. Think of it, when we played with Honey Is Cool at Gino, how would that look like? Ha ha! Anyway, our label also wanted us to change our name, so ]sa, who sings in Pineforest Crunch came up with Melony and we grabbed it. Q. SO HOW DID YOU GET SIGNED TO SOAP? PK. Well, we sent our demo tapes to a lot of labels at first. Four demos to be exact. And Soup liked the fourth one, and made the EP "Skycracker EP" straight from it! We didn't have to re-record anything. Q. HOW ABOUT RELEASES? PK. That's it. Ha ha. the Skycracker EP on Soup, but we have rehearsed a new song that's probably going to be released as a single in May and we have recorded sixteen songs in the Atlantis Studio for a full-length that will be released in August. Most of it is recorded live, because we feel it sounds a lot better that way. [The songs on the 'Skycracker EP' are: Mirror on The Freeway, Barbra Streisand Nose, Swoop Soup, Silicon Soul, November Blues.] Q. IS IT A GOOD CONTRACT YOU HAVE WITH SOAP? PK. We think so. It's not a life-time one, only for one EP, one single and one full-length, so we feel pretty free anyway. Q. ON SOAP, YOU'LL SOON HAVE YOUR OWN HOME PAGE? UW. They're working on it right now. It'll be up on IUMA pretty soon. Q. HOW ABOUT INFLUENCES / WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO? GN. I'd have to say Supergrass! JK. Pavement, Pixies and Beatles! Q. WHAT ABOUT SWEDISH GROUPS? JK. Yes of course. Fireside, Bob Hund. And Salt! Q. ARE YOU TOURING RIGHT NOW? JK. No, but we play in V{xj| tomorrow (26/1), and we'll be home on saturday for a dinner. Q. A DINNER? JK. Yeah, we learned about it just the other day. It's a dinner with a record label from Taiwan! ME. Think about it! Made in Taiwan. Ha ha! Q. ARE YOU GOING TO PLAY AT ANY FESTIVALS THIS YEAR? JK. We're not sure. If any, it'll probably be Hultsfred or Lollipop Stockholm. Q. ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO END THIS INTERVIEW WITH? GN. MNW have their own Internet office in the southern part of Stockholm, and that office also has a bar! You should come there and visit some time! Only, most of the time, they only serve coffee. Ha ha! The rest of Suredo are still playing together, using Cloudberry Jam's drummer, Per Bystr|m, on drums, (I think Ulf was now on guitar?) though they don't have a name for the band yet. He refused to say anything about new demos, gigs or recordings unfortunately, so I gather it's kind of a new thing, and we'll just have to wait and see. She also enjoyed the Melony gig a lot. I think I heard something about Henrik and her going back to Japan again pretty soon? * The Sound Technician (Melony) admitted that he subscribes to a t-shirt club, where the subscribers get new and cool t-shirts in the mail every month, while wearing a brand new "Teddybears Sthlm" t-shirt. * Pelle Valsinger (Cloudberry Jam) cursed the old members of Suredo for stealing their drummer, Per Bystr|m, and promised to never again tell a lie about Pleasurehouse (for the 3.767.834.633rd time). * Gunnar Nord‚n (Melony) didn't know who Slowdive were, and he's the one in the band who has access to the Internet. * Melony (the whole band) signed their first EP later that night with the following line of text: "This is the first (yes, it's true) EP that Melony signs". They also managed to add some good words about themselves to the posters around at the venue. //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Jan 1996 18:01:43 +0100 (MET) From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Sin's Selected News [27-Jan-96] Scandinavian Indie's Selected News [27-Jan-96] Naked - were featured in an article in Svenska Dagbladets friday edition, City yesterday. Though I'm not sure what to compare themto? And I think that's probably the reason I like them as much as I do. I just had to let you know about a funny thing that happened when they played. First they played 2 songs, and I was thinking, I _want_ to hear "Barbra Streisand Nose" all the time. So when there was a pause between the 2nd and 3rd song, Peter said: "..okay.. and here's a song about..." And I just said: "Barbra Streisand's Nose!" And Peter (stunned of course. :-)) said: "why... that's right!" and they started to play Barbra Streisand Nose. Hello, Well, the Cardigans are definitely releasing Life (AMERICAN version) in February (original schedule 20th of Feb) on Minty Fresh. I think this label is owned by Geffen. As you perhaps know, there are a few versions of Life circulating. The American one will be roughly the same one as in the UK (a 'compilation' of Emmerdale and Life) plus a bonus track called 'Happy Meal'. (BTW, does anybody know when the 'Tambourine Collection' will be out ?) I know of some indie-pop records store that have ordered Emmerdale and the other version of Life. So it SHOULD be easier and easier to find these CD:s. However, Emmerdale is VERY expensive as import... If you would like some more information, e-mail me, or visit The Cardigans Home Page : http://www.mech.kth.se/~moch/cardigans/cardi.html Greetings, ----------------------- Date: Mon, 29 Jan 1996 12:15:28 +0200 (EET) From: trkisa@uta.fi (Kimmo Saaskilahti) Subject: Re: Popsicle contest According to chief@lysator.liu.se: * I just glanced at the Popsicle WWW pages and noticed that it was * Kimmo who won "special CD" in their contest! * * Congratulations! Anyway, I guess I was lucky :) I haven't received it yet, but I've been just told that it is in the mail and I should receive it in a matter of days. I'll let you know what makes the cd so special, when I get it (provided I feel like bragging then :) Kimmo ----------------------- Date: Mon, 29 Jan 1996 13:30:48 +0100 From: Marten.Sahlen@eua.ericsson.se (Marten Sahlen) Subject: Re: Teddybears release "matine" chief@lysator.liu.se wrote: > I met Ulf Waldecrantz, Marketing Manager at MNW, who were traveling > with Melony when they played here last thursday, and he revealed what > was going to happen on the Teddybears release "matine" at the movie > theater Sibirien the next day, but also that I couldn't tell anyone! :-) > > I wonder if it's okay now, or maybe Marten (was it you?) would like > to tell everyone? Well, it started already at 15:00, and since I'm working I couldn't get there until 16:30. So the party had been going for awhile when I arrived. Some of the plans for this event apparently didn't work out. The brewery that were supposed to sponsor the beer, as well as some hired studio musicians that should play Teddybears' songs, both withdrew in the last minute, so everyone had to settle for hard liquor and Teddybears themselves playing instead. In my opinion, both these changes were for the better :) So when you got there, you got a box containing some food, peanuts, and a mini bottle of Vodka. Plus everone got a promo 7" single in green vinyl. Really neat! Then you could mingle in the crowded lobby of the theatre, and pick up new drinks at the bar. Pat Scab DJ'ed in the movie salon, and after some time the band jammed themselves into a tiny platform on the stairs up to the second floor. They played four songs from the upcoming album (Feb 26) which sounded really good. Then in the evening the party continued at a different place, but that's another (wet) story. Since Jan already has rattled a few times about me knowing Pat, I can tell that I was at his place last night. He told me that they had to ship back the new album "I Can't Believe It's Teddybears Sthlm" to the record plant because it had the wrong cover. But kind as he is, he gave me a copy of this version with erroneous cover that he happened to have at home. Might become a collectors item, he he. I also got a copy of the just released CD single, so the Teddybears section in my record collection rapidly grew this weekend. ------------------------- Date: Mon, 29 Jan 1996 14:39:22 +0100 From: d-sunjan@jmk.su.se (Jan Sundstrom) Subject: Re: Petrol/3 years' deal >>>I'm curious...I always thought bands are signed for a number of >>>*albums*, not years? I'll see if i can explain this in english ;) This deal was about that Warner owns the right of their songs for three year, they're not obliged to release anything. If nothing is released in 3 years, Petrol get their songs back. But since Warner works with Telegram, it's meant that Telegram is going to release thier stuff. If they do, there will be a "real" record deal. Probably a single out by april.
