They've just put out a new ep by RSB, which I hope to have by the end of the month. I'm not sure whether it's a 7" or a cd ep. I've got a 5 track 3" cd by them on Marsh Marigold (Germany) which is ok, not great. I've got another three 7" eps by them which I haven't had very long, or heard very many times. (My turntable is very user-unfriendly). So far none of these have managed to make much of an impression on me. The two tracks by them that have made an impression are two of their most recent releases. One is the track "Stay" on a split 7" on Grimsey with Benito (Jim & Stephanie Ruiz). The other is "Her Favourite Clichee" on the "Europop" 7" on Siesta (with 3 other bands). Both of these are excellent (all of the tracks on them are excellent). The line from "her fav. clichee" that sticks in my mind is: She's got toothpaste on her cheek, It's a thing that makes me weak OK, so this is feather-weight stuff. I'm not sure if they just liked the way this line sounded, or if it is supposed to have something to do with the belief (held by some) that toothpaste is supposed to be good for drying out pimples. Either you love it or this makes you want to puke. I'm going to see Melony live tonight. > Stockholmers can check them out 21:00 at Hanna's Deli. See you there. So I went there last night, and mingled with the "pop mob"... of course the omnipresent Lars Nylin was there. It was kind of a combined gig and release party, but unfortunately the free beer was finished when I arrived. Melony played for about half an hour, and I can safely say it was the best Swedish newcomers I've seen in some time. Even better than Mouth and Loosegoats. One point of reference that you can't get by when talking about Melony is Pixies... it's definitely not a case of sheer plagiarism, Melony's material stand out for itself, but it was like Black Francis' spirit was lingering in the room. The songs followed a common pattern: pretty calm, or "loose", verses followed by an explosion of dissonant riffs in the chorus. What struck me as particularily brilliant was the melodies - Peter Kvint is a first class pop smith - and the drummer doing backing vocals added a lot. They follow in a proud tradition of power pop trios, from Jam and onwards. I will go out and get the "Skycracker" EP as soon as I get a chance, that's fer sure. ----------------------- Date: Thu, 11 Jan 1996 12:43:12 +0100 From: d-sunjan@jmk.su.se (Jan Sundstrom) Subject: Re: Pinko Pinko >On Mon, 8 Jan 1996, Martin Eksten wrote: > >> Anybody here who has heard of the Swedish band Pinko Pinko? Tjena Nunan, och valkommen till klubben! Mr Nunstedt is actually an old friend of mine, since i worked at Expressen for some time, a year ago. My experience is that you always have to be careful what you say on lists. For a few weeks ago I met the record label boss from Energy Rekords (SPOCK, Cat Rapes Dog, Page etc), Mr Hakan Ehrnst, and he told me he's actually on this list too. Oops! Had i written something nasty about him or his no-longer-any-good bands on the label??? Nah, don't think so. But anyway, either watch your tongue or be prepared to fight for your opinions. Hello there! Yeah, my tape chain project was in the pipeline, but it turned out to be a rather long pipe...ok, I hear you, get to the point. Which is: I have now completed the Finnish Indie tape for our chain! And you can sign up to it!! And you can do it now!!! Take a look at the track listing below, complete with my lame comments/descriptions and see if there's anything worth wasting your time. Then send me (trkisa@uta.fi) an e-mail message with - your name - your e-mail address - your street address The bands on the tape are perhaps a bit more on the poppier side of indie, but there are a couple of noisier acts there too. I thought I'd leave most of the blossoming hardcore/noise scene in Finland to somebody else, more qualified to speak to us on this topic. I'll be accepting signups for some time, at least for a week or so. Then I'll organize a schedule and let participants know of it. I'll also try to 'design' an inlay card with some '''''artwork''''' on it (heh). If time & energy allow, I'll write some basic info about each band appearing on the tape and post it here and/or to the participants, perhaps even make it available on the web. But we'll see. Anyway, here's the main thing (some dates might be incorrect, I'm working from memory here): "Northern Lights Shine Bright Tonight" a compilation tape of Finnish indie pop and rock for the Scandinavian Indie mailing list side a Kitchen Sink: 'Fusion' from "Stereosounds" EP (Crawfish 1995) - melodic guitarscapes with great vocal harmonies Pansies: 'Fruit' CD5 (Poko 1995) - the debut single of this pure pop group Super: 'Spark' CD5 (Tangerine 1995) - the gods of easy listening pop in their mellower mood, girl/boy vocals and some cool hammond to boot Supperheads: 'Shooting Star' from Cucumber EP (Tangerine 1994/5?) - soft and crisp, great boy/girl duet Love Handles: 'Friday' from The Human Anatomy EP (In Hama Future 1994) - solid guitar walls, skillful guitarwork Aknestik: 'Kesalla ei menna nukkumaan' CD5 (Poko 1994) - acoustic and spacy electric guitars meet in this anthem for eternal summer; the best finnish-singing pop band around Shadowplay: 'Dirtysweet' from Eggs & Pop (Twin Hits 1994) - trumpet & piano-driven cafe music with a slight 80's feel to it Candy Darling: 'Daggers Scream' from their 1st single (AMT 1995) - a bit Pixies-like without the screaming, instead rather theatrical vocals by the coolest frontman in the country Spam: 'Something Vaguely Essential' from their self-released EP (1995) - wimpy mod-pop Annel Nieiddat: 'Ustitvuohta' from Giitu (Mipu Music 1993) - Lappish girl group with a folky ode to friendship (no, I don't understand the lyrics either) Laika & The Cosmonauts: 'The A-Treatment' from The Amazing Colossal Band (Amigo 1995) - surf music with spy/oriental spices Good Evening Manchester: 'Train' from their 2nd album (EMI 1991) - a bit more mainstream; great vocal harmonies, a nice little ditty 22-Pistepirkko: 'Birdy' from Big Lupu (Spirit 1992) - the most popular 'alternative' band in Finland, mixing 60's pop, rhythm'n'blues, country & western and what not Cessna: 'Cardamom Kiss' from Hobby-Like! (not released, 1995) - "...sort of combining the Swedish pop concept and American loser-indie" said the Elysium fanzine. Well, this is the band in which me and Sami play; it's him doing the whispery vocals - I take care of the Field Mice- esque bass lines. side b Soon: 'Candle' from Fresh! (a Tangerine compilation 1995) - dancey indie early 90's style Jimi Tenor: 'Take The 'S' Train' from Europa (Sahko 1995) - moronic elevator hammond jazz muzak with the grooviest drum machine solo you'll ever hear! Swellheads: 'Do Anything You Like' from the Fresh! comp - utterly sad ballad of almost epic proportions Fridge: 'Shaken & Stirred' from Fresh! - more of an indie-rock band with catchy choruses Coo: 'Fiat 600' from their demo tape (1995) - shoegaze will never die! somewhat reminiscent of Nowhere-era Ride, with a killer guitar riff Larry & The Lefthanded: 'All Allright' from Punk Rock Hold-Up EP (Trash Can 1995) - the leaders of the Finnish garage/surf/r'n'b scene, deliberately no-fi and in glorious mono! Noitalinna huraa!: 'Pikkuveli' 7" (Megamania 1988) - the twee-est band in this country ever; touching girl/boy vocals, silly drum machine and an unnecessary rock guitar solo. the song is about hoping that your kid brother would never grow up. Dog Eat Dog: 'Galaxies' 7" (In Dog We Trust 1991) - sort of powerpop, or something snappy anyway The Bee Meeting: 'Everything Turned Upside Down' () - 60's jangle with girly vocals Thee Ultra Bimboos: 'Hypnotized' from - aptly titled trash-glam-garage-rock quartet mess about in a b-movie style Circle: 'Kyberia' from Meronia (Bad Vugum 1994) - ultra hypnotic dance trance, groove beyond groove... Deep Turtle: 'Tungo' from - i guess this is what they call 'math-rock'; it's sort of disjointed anyway Poverty Stinks: 'Another World' from Crackle & Pop (a Snap compilation 1992) - 60's influenced jangle with rather nerdy vocals Dada Girl: 'Everything About The Gun' from their 1st demo (1995) - Suede and Bowie have been often mentioned in this context (at least by me :) ------------------------- Date: Fri, 12 Jan 1996 11:31:31 +0200 (EET) From: trkisa@uta.fi (Kimmo Saaskilahti) Subject: RSB According to Per Långström: * um, you should be able to get hold of their 7-inchers through freak * scene records in stockholm, i believe. the last time a was there (which * is a few weeks back), they had like three or four different ones. most * of them were released on some spanish label. weird. Suddenly a fat bloke with an acoustic guitar appeared and played some songs, just like *any* half shite acoustic guitar player. My friends : "He looks just like Roger Pontare!" "Who is this guy?" "He sounds just like Roger Pontare trying to play pop!" another person : "It's Frank Black" and, so it was. over and out... Punchline : don't play songs acoustic if they're not meant to be played acoustic.... Nope, the track is indeed "Drifter". The one you're thinking of is the Souls track on the Life Is a Joke compilation CD, which wasn't "Boring In a Proper Way" but a cover of New Order's "5-8-6". //Erik --------------------- Date: Sat, 13 Jan 1996 06:33:05 +0100 From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Motor Tour List Update [09-Jan-96] Motor Tour List (Update) 9 January 1996 Anywhen Roligan rec. 2/2 Goteborg - Filmfestivalen Flaskkvartetten MVG 20/2 Lund - Mejeriet Popsicle Telegram/Wea 14/2 Stockholm - Gino 15/2 Linkoping - Herrgar'n 21/2 Malmo - KB Changed 22/2 Kobenhavn - Cafe Rust 29/2 Karlstad - Jager 1/3 Uddevalla - Berits Bar Stakka Bo Stockholm Rec. 18/1 Stockholm - Gino 27/1 Lund - Mejeriet 31/1 Karlstad - Jager 1/2 Salen - Hogfjallscenter 2/2 Uppsala - Sten Sture & Co 3/3 Eskilstuna - Exit 8/2 Goteborg - Park Lane 9/2 Malmo - KB 10/2 Kalmar - Stadt ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boghandle (DK) Sony 2/2 Herning - Fermatern 3/2 Frederecia - Teatret 8/2 Helsingor - Toldkamret 10/2 Albertslund - Forbrandningen Michael Gira (US) 2.13.61 13/2 Kobenhavn - Stengade 30 (Spoken world performance) The Walkabouts (US) Virgin 24/2 Odense - Rytmeposten 28/2 Kobenhavn - Loppen 3/3 Goteborg - Underground 4/3 Stockholm - Studion 6/3 Malmo - KB The complete Motor Tour list can be found on the Scandinavian Indie WWW pages (on the Gig Lists page). //Erik ------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Jan 1996 06:33:31 +0100 From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Places to send demo tape On Wed, 10 Jan 1996, Johan Helmstad wrote: > We are a gothenburgian band who will finish recording a demo tape > next week and are interested in names and adresses (s-mail) to > places in Sweden which hosts conserts with indie-style bands, > to which we can distribute the tape. Hi there, if you want to play in Linköping, there's actually only two places to send demo tapes to; Herrgår'n and Skylten. I've made WWW pages for Herrgår'n on the Scandinavian Indie pages (from the Gig Guides page) with information about the place and where to send demos and a list of upcoming gigs. Skylten's pages are under construction, but to spare you the time having to check them out, here are their addresses: Herrgår'n - send demos to: Emil Larsson Banergatan 9 582 32 Linköping Skylten - send demos to: Kevin Box 1026 581 10 Linköping //Erik ---------------------- Date: Sat, 13 Jan 1996 06:34:50 +0100 From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: Expressen & journalists On Wed, 10 Jan 1996, Per Långström wrote: > oh man, does this mean that we/i should get back in line and praise > swedish rock journalism like never before..? hmm, thinking of it, erik > what do you say about a big repost on our previous ramblings?? it should > be fun, as we actually would have someone to address them all to..! ;) Ha ha.. well, I think not. :-) Or maybe it would make this world a better place? Oh well, it doesn't matter. I have to post what Jesper Larsson (at SA) wrote about Andres Lokko in the latest issue of a Linkoping university magazine (sorry, it's in swedish): "Vad jobbigt Anders Lokko måste ha det. *** And grj@expressen.se (Gunnar R Johansson) wrote: > Sorry, but Mr Nunstedt isn't on this list. True, he is on the list. But I think the only ones we've .. umm, had "low things" to talk about are a couple of music journalists. And I'll definitely defend what I've said (written) about them. It's definitely worth it, if you want to hear Yvonne play independent manchester-style pop, that is. I think that track, "Drifter", is great and like Kimmo said earlier, the Cardigans track "Pooh Song" is also a gem. WoW! Heh heh. Well, that message made me think of weird things that one has done / happened over the years when it comes to gigs and bands. Could be fun if we'd post such stories, don't you think? One "weird" thing was when Mary Beats Jane played in Kalmar about two years ago. The place they played at was so small that the audience (we) were about 30 centimeters from the band on the stage that was about 30 centimeters higher than the floor in front of it. This made it kinda easy to interact with the band, so I ended up dancing with the singer while he was singing and occasionally (sp?) play on one of the guys on guitar's strings. I can say that I wasn't sober that night. :-) Well, that's it for me right now. //Erik ----------------------- Date: Sat, 13 Jan 1996 06:36:11 +0100 From: chief@lysator.liu.se Subject: Scandinavian Indie Contest #1 - 96 ------------------------------------------------------ S C A N D I N A V I A N I N D I E C O N T E S T ------------------------------------------------------ 12-Jan-95 - Announcing the Scandinavian Indie WWW Contest --------------------------------------------------------- Just for fun, I was thinking about giving away some newly made Scandinavian Indie t-shirts (they're really good looking if I may say so myself :-)). They're in one size (Large) only, but I hope that won't be a problem. The contest is available to the subscribers to the Scandinavian Indie mailing list _only_ (to make it a bit easier to win). What you need to do: Easy. Find the "hidden" WWW page on the Scandinavian -------------------- Indie pages and do what that page tells you to. That means, on one of the pages, there's a link to the hidden page. It can be a character in a word, a line, a picture, whatever. Anything but a "normal" link to a page or address. You need to find that "hidden" link and click on it to access the "hidden" page. There you will find additional information. Easy? I don't know. If no-one finds it, I'll make it easier. You have until February 20th, 1996, to find the page. ------------------- If you don't win this time, don't worry, very few will (due to lack of funds unfortunately). Other bigger contests will follow throughout the year.
