"A couple of tracks"... Does this mean that there are Starmarket songs that
don't sound exactly like Husker Du...?
(Don't get me wrong, I love Husker Du, but still...)

mm, i couldn't agree more. starmarket sounds almost too much like husker
du. i mean, what's the difference? starmarket are from sweden and the
year is 1995. husker du came from the us 10 years ago..
so, it took 10 years for the media to catch on. ..and what's even more
sad is that starmarket are today one of the very best bands in this country.
but with the total lack of decent bands around here they are not in hard
competition..

anyway,

Hiya all!

If I saw right in the post three days before, I am the first and only
Hungarian subscriber here. Hello! I have to tell that I expected more
readers but hey, the atmosphere is much more intimacy than with
hundreds of subscribers! Well than, I'm Balazs and I'm from the
southeast part of Hungary from a city called Szeged. It's a middle
sized city with about 200 000 people. (if anyone interested...:)
It's a very nice place.

At first in the subscribing info this mailing list is for discussing
the scandinavian independent music. But what does "independent music"
mean? I have never met this expression in English before. Please
explain me what's this all about. :) In fact I subscribed because I'm
a Roxette fan and Roxette is Swedish what is scandinavian. But does it
independent? Hehe...

Anyway I think I will like this mailing list, but the notes
for Swedish clubs and TV programs are not really for me. Who cares?

Hey, I think I've been there. It's by the lake Balaton, isn't it?

Originally there wasn't really anyting with the music in itself that made
it independent. What determined if a band was independent or not was the
record label they were signed to. At the late 70's many small record labels
emerged that were run only by one or a few fanatic people, labels like Stiff,
Rough Trade, Factory, Step Forward, Korova, etc. These were called independent
since they were an alternative to mega-labels like CBS, WEA, EMI, BMG, ...
English pop magazines like Sounds, Melody Maker, and NME started to have
special independent top lists, which only included bands on these labels.
Anyone else remembers devouring these lists in the early 80's when Joy
Division, Echo&Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes, Gang Of Four, et al were the big
thing? Aaah, sweet nostalgia, those were the days :)

Anyway, back then the term independent music covered many different musical
genres: punk, gloom, industrial, ska, folk... But nowadays the term has come
to denote a certain pop style that heavily relies and more or less fuzzed
guitars, pale introvert singers that look at their own shoes while they
mumble in the mic, and sadly image has become more important than content.
Independent bands usually have a relatively small cult following, but as
soon as they get more widely known and get more fans and maybe even signed
to a major record label, then the original fans will give up on that band and
accuse them of having "sold out".

The term "independent music" is also somewhat ambiguous, since for example
Kent (successful Swedish indie pop band) are signed to BMG, which is one of
the bigger record labels, and definitely not independent.

I'm afraid Roxette wouldn't count as independent since they are on a major
record label (WEA ??), and they sell too many records, and have too many
fans, and are too happy... I think they deserve lots of credits for making
Swedish pop more recognized around the world, but hardcore indie fans would
not agree with me.

Well Balazs, hope you get some sense of what all this is about. Stay tuned,
and you'll hear about many new Scandinavian bands, some independent some
not, some good some not.

You bet! Not to mention the Associates ('Party Fears Two' is still my
favourite single ever), and all that really good early stuff from
Aztec Camera, Orange Juice [what was that Foreigner song -- 'Waiting
for "A Girl Like You"' :], Depeche Mode, Everything But The Girl,
Prefab Sprout...

Hmm, I dunno, I'd sooner say that people do kind of like _classifying_
things, and 'indie' as a concept has just acquired a life of its own.
It is pretty indefinable, especially when you think that the Cardigans
are indie but Millencolin aren't. And REM and Bj|rk used to be but
aren't really any more...

> Independent bands usually have a relatively small cult following,

Partly this is true. Partly it's just that when they get more money,
they make the music they were trying to make before on a low budget.
Whereas it was the low budget sound that made it good!

Well mostly they're not because they don't make anything _like_
guitar-based pop music...

Robert, noting that to be an indie kid you have to be under 18 anyway,
        eller hur M}rten? ;)

According to Ludvig Borgne:

* Haven't seen any info about a Stockholm gig, but they're playing in Lund
* 10/10, so I guess if they are playing in Stockholm, it'll be around that date.

Sorry if this was answered already... anyway, here are the dates for
the Stereolab Scandinavian 'Tour':

7/10 Copenhagen
8/10 Oslo
9/10 Stockholm
10/10 Lund

Yep, no gig in Finland :-( And I was told that the tickets for the
Lund gig would cost only 30 SEK (!) Have fun...

ps. I got the tour info from the Benno WWW pages, which everybody

Does anyone have an idea where they're playing in Copenhagen... I

Yes, the web site I mentioned earlier has also the venues, but I was

Well I just assumed yhat you had used cut'n'paste, so at first sight I
thougt that there was no venue info on benno. So I didn't bother to
look ;-) Now I just need to set up a meeting in Copenhagen so I can
convince my department that they should pay my ticket to Copenhagen...
Shouldn't be to hard :-D

Anyone else planning to go to the Lab gig in Copenhagen or am I the

So I know this is the scan-indie list, but with all this talk about
Stereolab... Could someone have the kindness to describe what they sound
like for one who have never heard them. All I know is that they've done
some collaborations with the dadaist industrial band Nurse With Wound.

Short description: Great!

Slightly longer description: Simple 2-3 chord riffs on guitars, moogs and
farfisas repeated over and over with french girl singing, sometimes in english,
sometimes in french. Very repetitive and hypnotizing. Influenced mainly by
70's "kraut-rock" bands like Neu and Can.

Greetings-

Kimmo was speaking of RSB and so I thought I'd chime in since I got a
letter from Mikael the other day... he says that they've recorded a
single for the Siesta label which should be out in November. Seems
that they used a drummer for 2 of the tracks for a rougher sound -
could be interesting.

If you're in Stockholm on the 28th RSB is playing a club called Studion
with a support band... the first time they've headlined a show.

Mikael went on to say that Toby did an interview with the band not long
ago - maybe he was going to put it on his web page? Toby?

While we're on a twee string I should let you all know that Andreas Knutsen
has put out the third (and last issue) of I wish I was a Berrykin (10K) which
is a nice romp through the jangle pop world. It features short interviews
with Heavenly, Charlots, Avocado Baby and Pastel Collision along with the
usual reviews and passing thoughts. Andreas seems to have a pretty good
handle on the tweepop scenes in the US and UK so if you're looking to
latch on to another local trading partner or info source you might drop
him a letter:

The album isn't due yet, but in one or two weeks. Anyone checked out the

He is a cool man. I mean it!

They weren't that impressed, really, and gave it 5/10. POP seem to
be, in general, a bit negative about Swedish music; or much too

About POP's review of The Bear Quartet's 'Holy Holy' - well, they compare
them a bit to The Smiths, and wrote something like "naive, loveable
and non-demanding pop that brings Saltkr}kan, Televinken and Merry to
mind." He (the reviewer Micke Widell) also has his own thoughts about
Matti's voice (thin and vocal cord fluctuations) and because of that
he can't understand why they are so popular in Japan. Which I think
has nothing to do with it, but that's my own opinion.

Yvonne - well, I just saw their new video on Z-Tv, and well.. they are
moving further away from their 'old' sound and heading for the synth-ish
sound, I feel. It's funny, but when I saw the video and heard the music,
I came to think of the old swedish 'cult' movie "G". Wasn't it Reeperbahn
or something that had the same image and somewhat of that sound (not
completely, mind you, but there's something..). I'll definitely listen
to the album when I see it though.

About the new West Side releases...

Questions
---------

the 23enigma lists track 4 with Blue on CD1 as coming from:
WeCD 100 CD5 95 Blue All I Ever Do

... but last time I checked the new CDs at the local wehaveitall-
record store I found Tommy 16's single '#1 Single' with the
catalog number WeCD 100. Anyone have the Blue single? Anyone know?

Magnus: do you know if Jocke will go with TBQ on their coming tour
in october? I had hoped he would accompany Blithe, but he didn't. :-(

Those of you who got lucky and found the new Bear Quartet EP (Tibet EP),
does it say if the new TBQ full-length will be WeCD 104?

Thoughts about "there is someone loving you..."
-----------------------------------------------
The Blissful track on CD1 "Freedom Fighters (remix)" is really
not what I thought they would sound like. It's jumpy, fun, and got
a beat I didn't really expect when everyone says they have a Cardigans
sound. The track on CD2 "Summing Up My Day" sounds more like I
expected. Soft and kind of makes me want to shake my hand like Cardigans-
Nina.. ha ha. Well the first track _is_ a remix, so that's probably it.

Blithe - "Bay Of Souls" is fantastic! And the three new songs they
played live here this thursday as well! It's a pity they're not
planning to release anything new soon.

The A Shrine track on CD2 "Chez Bob" - WHAT? Synthesizers, a drum
machine, Di Leva's 'sweeeep' sound. Is Ekan singing "I Wanna Be Adored"???
His voice like something one would hear when listening to an early Catherine
Wheel single. What happened?!

General thoughts
----------------
I think that Jocke probably released the two compilations in a hurry
because there are numerous errors in the booklets and on the sleeves.
Just the fact that the West Side catalog listed in the booklet to
the 23enigma has the "We're All Part of a Family" compilation listed
twice (WeCD 073 and WeCD 076) and the WeCD 076 is described as a Long
Sleeve T-Shirt, which usually comes with the catalog number WeTS...
It also lists Carpe Wade's single "Snow" as WeDC 077... I haven't
checked for other mistakes though. Those were the ones that caught my
eyes the moment I opened the booklet.

One good thing about the catalog listed is that it lists what stuff
is out of print, and it really is a lot, unfortunately.

The "There Is Someone Loving You.." compilation lists Carpe Wade's
CD "Evidence" as WeCD 092 on CD1 and as WeCD 094 on CD2. It also
lists Blue's single "All I Ever Do" as WeCD 100 (as said above)
which is not possible.

Oh well... enough ramblings from me now...

About Tommy 16 - the songs I have heard are the ones on the compilations,
the first two tracks on the full-length and the single "#1 single".
Here's my thoughts:

They really do not sound like Hardy Nilsson. That's for sure. I'd
say they sound like Popsicle mixed with Brainpool. It's not bad
though. Really. But, I'm not into "happy pop", or "wimpy pop" or
whatever it's called today with Blur and Pulp as the top happy
poppers. The music is just a breeze without anything standing
out, like a nifty guitar-wall here and there, vocals not following
the red thread of the music all the time. I like to be surprised,
to be able to say "I would never have expected _that_ _there_!".
Unfortunately, that never happens with Tommy 16. But if you're
into Blur, Pulp, Brainpool or Popsicle, you better check Tommy 16
out. Then, they will probably fit right into your record collection.

Interesting you bring this up right now. I've been discussing them
with a couple of guys through email, and had the same questions myself.
I have never heard them. Any swedes on the list that have? About
their popularity in the U.S., browsing through the Pop Narcotic catalog
I get now and then by snail mail from Boston, I found a split single
with RSB and Benito (on Grimsey) that said:

"Red Sleeping Beauty / Benito (Grimsey) ($3.50)

The first thing that struck me about this single was the incredible
effort and detail put into the packaging. The sleeve is printed on
this unique paper that has a sort of rough sandpaper quality to it.
It is also die-cut, with a hand written postcard inserted into the
slots. As if the packaging isn't enough, the music is great as well.
Red Sleeping Beauty are a Swedish band with female vocals and a pretty
energetic sound, I've heard them on several compilations in the past
and their songs never disappoint me. I'm not really sure where Benito
are from, but they remind me of the Beach Boys and maybe ELO (if they
were forced to make music in an inexpensive and stripped down way).
Based on the first two releases, this is a label to watch out for.
It's rare to see such attention to every detail these days."

This really makes me wonder why I haven't heard them. I relly would like
to. Anyone have an address one can write to for demos or something?

I think that "Benno" (you know, the heavily money-sponsored (yes it's
true, I have it from a safe source) web pages in Kalmar have some info
about them on one of their pages. There's a link to their pages
on the "Favourite Links" page from the Scandinavian Indie home page,
in case you don't have their address.

Yeah, it's there all right - a very nice read that'll give you an idea
of where the band come from, ideologically I mean. Geographically, I
think they come from Stockholm, but I could be wrong. BTW, there's a
reasonably new Red Sleeping Beauty 7" out on the US label Sunday Records,

For those who are interested, Benito is actually the same band as The
Legendary Jim Ruiz Group, which is an American (from New York, or DC,
or from somewhere completely different...) lounge-pop/bossanova pop
group. I haven't yet heard this split EP, but it should be on the way
from the other side of the Atlantic. I'll let you know when I get to
hear it!

* This really makes me wonder why I haven't heard them. I relly would like

Well, if you write to the band, they will surely tell where you can
get their records. As Sami already mentioned, they have just released
a single (or EP) on the seminal Sunday Records label in the US. And I
was told that it is possible to buy them even from Helsinki, so why
not in Stockholm too. Just find a store that still has some vinyl in
stock and perhaps they will have it, or can order them.

Another possibility is always to write directly to the label and send
the cash for the record in envelope. A bit risky, perhaps, but it has
always worked for me.

The "Seasons Change" 7" EP which I have was released on Somersault
label (another great US label, check out also their glo-worm EP). You
can order it directly from them, it costs 5 US dollars. I don't have
the address at the moment, but I'll post it later.

* I think that "Benno" (you know, the heavily money-sponsored (yes it's

Err...so? :) I don't think the source which pours in the money is
placing too rigorous restrictions on the content of the pages, because
Toby Thorsen, one of the maintainers of the site (and of Stevepops
fame) asked if he could include some stuff about Cessna (the low-key
pop group in which me and Sami play) - even before he had even heard
our buzz! :) And while I'm at it, I might go on with some boring
self-promotion: we have now finished our first demo tape and if
somebody happens to be interested in hearing it, let me know and we'll
work out something.

I saw Red Sleeping Beauty in some kind of double-headlining thing with Smash
Hit Wonders at Studion, Stockholm recently.

I didn't like them very much live. Bands with two female singers with
tambourines are sort of cool, but their performance felt very insecure and
uncomfortable. But perhaps their records would change my life, I haven't
heard them, so I dunno about that.

Hi!

As there has been lots of postings recently about Red Sleeping Beauty I
thought I would add a short note on their Studion gig last thursday.

The setting was the the "RSB big band" :), replacing the drum machine with
a "real" drummer and adding an extra girlie (Tilda) doing backup vocals and
tambourine.

The sound was a bit heavier then usual (using the word heavy in a *very*
relative way), using distorted guitars in a couple of songs (making them
sound a bit like Godstar's tweeier moments).

This gig was far better than the one in Emmaboda this summer, but watching
them I still get the feeling that they (Micke/Kristina) really don't want
to play live. My vote goes for listening to their records at home, drinking
tea as the autumn leaves tumble around. BTW, Kristina seemed very pleased
with their new record, produced by They Go Boom. Sounds interresting to me.

Opening for RSB was Smash Hit Wonders, pride of Skovde. SHW is a four piece
pop band whose musical influences descens more from american lo-fi than
english poser-pop . Great dynamic powerpop songs with a clear hit
potential. Great action-packed gig, good sound and no lack of attitude.
The set consisted of the songs from the first demo plus a couple of newer
songs they also played at Emmaboda that I think are even better. More
"punk", catchier refrains.

As usual, not many people bothered to show up at Studion, only 100 or so.
People in Sthlm don't seem to care about the indie scene that is happening
right now in Sweden, only in bands that have already made it. There are a
click of maybe 20 or 30 people that one usually spot at the gigs. Most
small towns have a bigger "scene". Am I wrong? How many people from Sthlm
on the list share my thoughts?

Hmm. It's no big secret that Benno is sposored by Telia. It's on their
front page. I like Benno, especially their new chatboard. Check it out.
They also have info on both bands mentioned in this posting. Just hope that
more bands use them by sending in demos, photos and resumes so the can be a
more complete map of I-pop than they are at the moment.

Pop on.

Subject: tape chain?

Hi again!

Some of you might remember that months ago there was some discussion
on this list about arranging a series of tape chains, presenting
various types of scan-indie bands to list members. However, this idea
wasn't never realized.

Anyway, now I thought I'd bring up the idea again, and I'll volunteer
to run the first tape chain, demonstrating the poppier side of the
Finnish indie scene. The tape will feature both already established
bands and some hip upcoming combos from around this country.

This is how the chain will work:

I will first compile a tentative track/band listing and post it
here. If you have any suggestions or requests, feel free to post them
at this point either to the list where they can be discussed, or by
private e-mail to me.

Then, after the (possible) discussion is over and done with, I will
post a sign-up notice, and if you're interested, drop me a line. I
will then compile a more or less sensible schedule for the chain,
ie. the order in which the tape will travel from a person to
person. In other words, I will mail the tape to the first person in
the schedule, s/he may listen to the tape for a couple of days, maybe
make a copy of it if it's worth it (hopefully write a review for the
list), and mail it to the next person in the list, and so on. It's
really simple (even if it looks complicated in my crappy English).

Once the tape has started its journey across the globe, someone else
can start running another tape chain.

I hope this made some sense... let me know if I didn't cover some part
of the deal.

Of course, if there isn't any interest for this, we can forget it
(again :-) )

Bye,

kimmo
