Back from the festival - and what a good festival it was! I'll
write some kind of report and post it some time during the next
few days. I just have to say something about some things. :)

VELVET BELLY - What a fantastic band. What fantastic music.
What a wonderful voice the singer (what's her name?)
has! I was afraid I would miss Slowdive when they
broke up, but now I'm sure I won't.

SALT - Talked to Nina (lead vocals) after their gig, because they
weren't included on any posters or information I'd seen
before the festival and she told me they were contacted
in the last minute. An amazing concert. They are really
       something.

STARMARKET - Get them a bigger stage next year, thank you.

SOULS - Interesting, but not that interesting. Did Cecilia wear
        _anything_ under her short dress?

Well.. I'll be back with a longer "report"-thingie. :)

I'm pretty much finished with my version of the discography for
the Charlatans. There are a lot of questions in there still though,
mainly because I don't have a complete set of everything they
have released in all formats (who does?), but I hope there are
people out there who can help with information where it is needed

If someone would like a copy (version 0.9), please email me

Please do! Those Cloudberry folks are very nice people and I, for one,
am interested in hearing what's up with them these days.

Thanks,

And Happy Dead Men are also heading off to Japan in a short time.
And there has at least been talks about a visit to Japan for Cinnamon too.
And Cardigans sell ridiculously many albums over there.
Seems like there's something with the more wimpy Scandinavian indie bands
that appeal to them Japanese people.

The Pansies will be heading out for Japan sometime in November for a two
week promotional tour. They`ll be playing two or three gigs with two
other finnish bands (a Helsinki based acid-jazz group, Rinneradio and
some other group). Their deput album - purple red indigo blue (definetly
worth checking out) will be released in Japan by the same company that
released the Cardigans` album earliear this year. The best of luck for
them.

I posted this at the beginning of summer, and I'm reposting it now
with the idea that students are coming back to their university
accounts and so it will reach more people this time. Just to give
you fair warning, if nothing comes of this post, I *will* post it
again (you can't get rid of me that easily)!
I am looking for an audio copy of Bjork's performance at
19 Roskilde Festival. I was there, and it was one of the most
amazing things I've ever seen. Not just because of the music and
her performance, but the entire atmosphere of the event. If anyone
has been to this or most any other European festival, then you have
a good idea of what I mean. Anyway, I know that her show was
broadcast on the Scandinavian Radio3 (or something like that), so
out of 4 countries (I'm including Denmark, of course), SOMEONE MUST
HAVE RECORDED THIS SHOW. As far as I know, it hasn't been released
commercially as a bootleg, but there are certainly tapes floating
around somewhere. If you have any idea where I might find a copy,
please e-mail me directly. Or even if you just know someone who
listens to Scandinavian radio, likes Bjorwent to the festival,
anything...I'd appreciate any leads you can give me. To whomever
can help me find this: YOU WILL BE REWARDED. It means *that* much
to me. Also, if I find a copy I will make it available to anyone
who wants it for dubs. So please, I beg you, send me on my way...

Hi!
Cinnamon and Cark will play at Chalmers the 16:th of September. I suppose
Cinnamon is well known on this list, soft summer pop of the best kind.
They just released their debut album "Summer Meditation" (in Sweden that

from Gothenburg that plays somewhat harder pop. If you want to know more
about them you can ask on this list and they might answer.

Tickets are 60 Swedish Crowns. Age 20 or up, or student legimitation.
The party starts at 22, and continues all night long (until 6 in the
morning or something like that). Vapour Trail are DJ:s.

We who arrenge this is called PU, the program committe at Chalmers.

Hyndans H|rna is located in Gamla Stan, pretty close to the bridge over to
S|der/Slussen. Has a big sign over the entrance that says "Tapas".
I've spent a lot of time there, but never actually seen a concert there.
(And no, it's not a lesbian club...)

Who are April Tears by the way? Never heard the name before.
If Monostar used to be Midninght Moses, I have seen them, and all I can say is
that U2/Springsteen wannabees isn't excactly my cup of tea...

Just got back from London/Reading btw. It was pretty fun to see Wannadies
posters (promoting You And Me Song) everywhere. Also, three scandinavian
acts at Reading (Cardigans, Whale and Bj|rk) must mean that Scandinavian
"indie" music is getting some kind of recognition in the UK.

Lots of thanks to everyone who wrote to the mailing list or emailed me with
more info about the "Hyndans Horna" pub! I really appreciated it! (It seemed
to be a wellknown place, as so many people knew where it was. Hmm, guess I
ought to get out and get drunk more often. Haven't done that very much since
I moved to Sthlm....)

The April Tears has got this really great female singer, who sounds a bit
like Bjork combined with Wendy James in-those-good-old-Transvision-Vamp-days.
The music is a mixture of lots of things: indiegitarrmangel (orkar inte leta
upp en ordlista), synthpop, early 80'ish postpunk. Sometimes depressed,
sometimes rhythmical, sometimes with a strong pop feeling. I like that debut
album "Strange Paradise" (Memento Materia/Border) a lot. The synth fanzine
RELEASE did too (it got the grade 10/10 from them). Sound Affects didn't
(** if I remember correctly). Ohwell.

The April Tears have done an earlier EP too, called "Cellarbird", but I
haven't heard that one.

Thanks again to everyone who helped me out!

You're right. They gave 'Strange Paradise' "two stars" (not good) in issue
#28 with the comments:

"The April Tears is a band I've been following from the crib in Tran}s
four years ago and I'm somewhat surpised they're not making more progress
than they are. They still sound uncomplete and stumble between different
directions in style like indie, goth, synth and even dance. It makes the
whole impression of the album really scattered.

Some times it sounds completely okay and some tracks are pretty good, but
it feels like April Tears does not know which leg to stand on. When they
then put their pieces of influences together, containing everything from
Jesus And Mary Chain, Lush, Bj|rk and Depeche Mode, it still does not
sound like something of their own.

The singer, Sara Gunnarsson, on the other hand, does sound like something
of her own. She finally dares to sing out loud. Unfortunately she's very
insecure and it is more luck than skill if she hits the right tone. Her
voice goes like a wobbler through the melodies, and sometimes I wonder
what she's really doing, because there's nothing wrong with her voice.

All together, I still don't think that 'Strange Paradise' is complete
rubbish, but it's really easy to find a lot of bad things on it. But,
if I know Andreas Jismark and company, they won't give up that easily.
We will probably hear more from them in the future."

Heh heh, well, yes, they used to be Midnight Moses. And I agree with
you on the U2 reference. But not Springsteen (!). I'm not sure what
they sound like today though, as they constantly change their sound
which makes it a bit troublesome to say "go and see them" or not.

Before they managed to break their contract with a label about a year
ago, they did sound a bit... hmm, mainstream-ish, forced by the label.
When I saw them a couple of times this summer, they did still have
a couple of songs that were of "the old school", but also a couple of
pop gems, that I wouldn't recommend anyone to miss. Though when I
last spoke to Eric (vocals, guitar) two weeks ago, he said they
had changed their sound somewhat again (!), so who knows what they
sound like now. If someone goes to see them, I'd be happy if you'd
let me know what you thought.

Yes! It definitely looks like the UK are in for a Scandinavian indie
wave. Tim Burgess claims to be a big Wannadies fan for instance, which
can't be all bad can it? :) And their single "You And Me Song" is
climbing the UK charts. Read somewhere that they had been thrown
out of their hotel after they had misplaced the keys for their room
and disturbed their neighbor who happened to be a diplomat, after
a Morrissey-party, while in the UK a few weeks ago. Oh well...

Subject: The Chump's demo

I'm playing in a band called THe Chump. We play this grunge/rock thing
and we've been playing for about a year. Soon our first demo will be
out and everyone who likes to have one, should send me their address
so I can send you one. So far we're not collecting any money but
if our budget gets too tight the fee will be around 20 SEK, $5, 10 FIM
Afterall there will some postings to do...

The demo has four songs. The 1st one's called "Running Down".
The 2nd one is a bit older and it's called "George". It's kind of
a joke song though but it's cool anyway. 3rd is called "Mr. Pink"
and it's old too concidering how long our band has been together.
The 4th song is not sure yet but I think it will be some new
material...

So if your interested I will send you our demo. And if you can pass
the demo forward to some radio stations it would be very cool.
Or for that matter some recordings how can publish it...

Anyone heard any news on the swedish group Yvonne?
When is the album due? I'm really looking forward to it, since there are a
lot of songs never released (and i only have one tape with early demos).

Especially one song come to my mind, called something like "And Maybe They
Will Laugh", played at Studion in Stockholm this spring.

Hey!

I bumped into Mats of Bob Hund last Friday! He was standing at the
korvkiosk in Bjorns Tradgard, Stockholm.

I asked if they were going to do any live shows.
 - No, only a secret club gig in Malmoe [was last weekend]. In Nov/Dec we
will tour Norway and Denmark. No swedish shows planned so far.

What about the album???
 - We'll be recording during the autumn, already started...
When asking about songs he said:
  - Kvicksilver will be included, plus most of the unreleased songs played
live recently, although not older stuff like "Jag sager ingenting" and "Vem
vill bliva stor".

He looked healthy and well, and had his bass case under the arm. ;)

Well, he was most likely on his way home from Kvarnen (a bar, for non-
Stockholmers) where he is frequently spotted. Furthermore, Bob Hund is
rehearsing in the basement of Kvarnen together with some other bands,
like Nomads and This Perfect Day and...

Yeah, like anyone who has seen them live this summer knows (I saw them at
Tantog}rden) they have a lot of new songs coming that sounds very
promising. BTW, I've asked this before and I do it again, how many LP copies
were released of Bob Hund's full-length album?

Aha! So that was the "secret limited CD" one would have received if
one had renewed the subscription. Please let us know what's on it

Well, according to bands I've talked to about it, it's true. I
don't remember which company bought it (maybe Pioneer?) though.
Blithe play here next week - maybe I can ask them (unless Magnus
can answer direct to the list now?).

Ha ha ha.. well, Magnus would surely know about that.

Did you buy the full-length? I saw a single yesterday (WeCD 098 I think)
but I didn't have the money to buy it. :( Please post a review whichever
Blissful record it is!

I listened to it a while back. Hmmm.

While we're talking about the Wannadies - anyone buy the new sampler
from Soap? Eggstone, Wannadies, This Perfect Day etc. A load of tracks.
I just glanced at it when at the record store and I'd buy it if I had
the money. (On a side-note: anyone buy "Help!" - the children of bosnia
(?) tribute compilation including the Charlatans, (esp the Charlatans! :)
Boo Radleys, Portishead, Suede etc. What was the Charlatans track like???)

Subject: Starmarket EP "Your Style"

Bought the new Starmarket EP "Your Style" when they played here last
thursday, and it's a definite must! Here's the standard info:

 Tracks
 ------
 1. Your Style (1:51) (from the "Starmarket" CD)
 2. Hands In Pockets (2:34) (appears on their demo tape #3 as well)
 3. Top Floor (3:32)
 4. Walkman (3:11)
 5. When Doves Cry (2:19) (from "Purple Pain")

My first feelings when I listen to this EP is that it is definitely
worth the money, even if it's only for the three tracks one can't get
anywhere else. Hands In Pockets can probably be described as having
a punk-ish chorus with a mass of guitars through the rest of the song.
Top Floor has got a beautiful guitar line going through the whole track
which makes it work. Walkman. Starting off sounding like a (to me it
sounds like it anyway) Sugar/Husker Du/Bob Mould chorus-track one can
find on a couple of tracks on the full-length. But when it comes to
the moving-out-of-the-chorus, it sounds like.... When I first heard this
I thought "where the .... have I heard this before?". And suddenly it
hit me - Kent! But it's only the last few riffs at the end of each
chorus, but it's definitely Kent. Which song? I don't know. I don't
have the album. Listen to it and tell me, please.

Wow...any chance for Denmark...please please please

Yeah it was a bit of a bummer :( Outside the venue a lot of stupid
swans fans where yelling we don't want to see Cornershop, theyre crap,
theyre not swans, we dont know them.... So sad that someones brain
died in the mid eigthies. But they whre quite happy when they heard
Cornershop was cancelled, and then we where a few who just was
disappointed. Actaully I knew it from the day before...one of my
friend was wearing the Elvis Sex Change T-shirts just as a protest,
but I guess no-one noticed :)

But well Swans was quite okay anyway

Haven't seen any info about a Stockholm gig, but they're playing in Lund
10/10, so I guess if they are playing in Stockholm, it'll be around that date.

What the f*ck, did they cancel??

Anyway, who's going to the Swans concert in Stockholm on Monday?
I will go (if it's not sold out which I seriously doubt),
so maybe we could gang up somewhere before.

Is anybody going to see Honey Is Cool in Uppsala, Kalmar Nation tomorrow
(friday 22th)?

I might go there (live in Stockholm), but it'd be better to join in if
someone on the list comes along.

For those who haven't heard them: Gothenburg band, lovely Karin Dreijer on
vocals/guitar. Sounds most like PJ Harvey, with the baby-like vocal
qualities of Alison (The Cranes) and the agression of Babes In Toyland.
Heavy, powerful and an erotic note to it in a weird way. Definately worth
seing.

Until now, they've only released a demo tape + two songs on Kittenish 2
compilation.

Mail me quick if you're going there!!!

I think Robert actually has the full-length, as he bought his copy of
the "Factory Girl" single (WeCD 098) at Tr=E4stockfestivalen, just like
I did :-)

Haven't listened to the single very many times, but here are some of
my recollections...

The title track sounded a bit Blur-esque to me, while the second song
"I Was Wrong" was a bit more like their debut mini-album. The third
song is, well, some kind of a dub-reggae-oddity, quite interesting in
a way...overall the single wasn't as wonderful as "Greatest", but then
again, not many discs that I have been listening to lately are :-)

So, how's the new full-length, Robert?

I think the Bli$$ful album ("The Blissful Orchestra") is good. Some tracks
are the same great type of pop music as the title track of the "Factory
Girl" single you guys were writing about earlier (haven't heard "Greatest"
yet, though..), some tracks are some great wimpy Cardiganistic jazz pop, and
then there are some boring more funky track where Blissful Show Us That They
Are Real Musicians whocanmakeanyaudiencefallasleepinnotimeatall. But it's a
good record anyway. Fuck Nunstedt of Expressen. *flin*

The April Tears were great live, by the way. Monostar that was the main
attraction at that Hyndans' gig were sort of boring.
