Subject: where is everybody??

Well, since discussion seems to have dropped off a bit on the 'ol
scan-indie list, I thought I'd toss out a question:
What's going on in Norway, or Denmark? So far, I'm gettin' a pretty good
feel about the Swedish scene, and the Finnish scene has been discussed,
and even Iceland a bit. But what about the other 2? Specifcally, I'm
interested in more melodic stuff, female vocals.....anyone?????

Discuss!

Ok, continuing what Chris started yesterday - I'd like to ask something:

 1. Now that at least four festivals in Sweden are over, didn't anyone
on this list go to any of them? What happened? What was great? What
sucked? Festival reports! I know we have record label representants
on this list - How did _your_ band do?

I know that I want to know more about Bergslagsrocken 95! (I mean,
Dog Eat Dog and Downset gig reports mostly, as I know they kick
    ass. Hard.)

 2. Anyone on the list but me see Whale when they toured Sweden?
What happened, what songs did they play.. etc. Gig report!

 3. So, Band of Susans was in town.
    Nothing to say?

 4. Salt played at Studion in Stockholm.
Nothing to say? Didn't anyone go there?

 5. Flakes play here in about 10 minutes. I'll go and see them.
And I'll write a gig report.

and so on... keep the list floating!

 //Erik

P.S. I'm typing in a really _really_ interesting interview with MOUTH
right now. It'll be posted to the list tomorrow. Stay sane. D.S.

I was at the two below, and I know that at least one more on the list were
at both of them (where are you, Ludde :)

> 3. So, Band of Susans was in town.
> Nothing to say?

My first impression was that it was an awful small crowd, but then BOS had to
compete with Gene (Gino), Brainpool (Gröna Lund), and Cinnamon (Hyndans).
And again, BOS peaked around 89-90, so maybe there aren't more than 70-80 true
fans remaining in Stockholm. The circumstances weren't optimal: the band excused
themselves by saying that Susan had a bad cold, and that they came straight to
Studion after a 16 hour drive up from Berlin. Nevertheless, they performed a gig
that were pretty decent, though I'll probably not remember it as a highlight
from 1995. As for the gig, they played most songs from the new album, and a few
old hits from Love Agenda and Veil. The sound was OK, but there seemed to be
some problems with the drummer. Since Ron Spitzer don't do any touring, BOS always
have to hire a drummer for tours, and I dont blame this guy from getting lost
once in a while during the long songs... I mean playing the same pattern over and
over for like 10 minutes until you get totally hypnotized, then no wonder he stopped
too early or kept on drumming when the others stopped.

The most annoying was this man, an Arab in his 50s, who obviously had been smoking
too much camel shit. He kept screaming about how high everybody in NY were. At first
the band laughed at him, but then they started to get bothered. Especially when
he yelled when Susan tried to concentrate on that soft part at the beginning of
Elisabeth Stride.

Overall it was pretty crushing: their droning three guitar fuzz gets totally
mesmerizing at best, though at times it verges on the tedious (for me at least).

> 4. Salt played at Studion in Stockholm.
> Nothing to say? Didn't anyone go there?

The night after BOS it was time for Salt. Again I was amazed, but this time at
the large crowd. Surprisingly many teeny-bopper girls were there, probably
because they see a role model in Nina Ramsby's presence. I think Nina can be for
the 90s what Kajsa Grytt was for the (early) 80s. Salt is an extremly tight trio,
a cross between PJ Harvey and Pixies. To accentuate this they did a PJ song as
encore. This was the first time ever they did an encore, BTW.

Nina has a stage presence extraordinaire. She jumps, she howls, she sweats, she
croaks, she plays guitar in a fashion that makes Hendrix look like a dead negro...
oops I get carried away here, but she's just brilliant and she's *there*. And the
guys aren't bad either, they lay out the solid platform on which Nina can excel.

Now I'll just have to buy their album, Auscultate. This is a cliche, but see
them if you can.

Q. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE GIG TONIGHT?
PB. The audience was great, so the whole thing ended up pretty okay I think,
but the lights hid most of them [the audience]. I saw one girl about
two meters in front of me, but that was it.
BS. I wore these sunglasses the whole time! I've never done that before.
PB. Well, we saw that the place was packed before and after the gig anyway
    [laugh].
HC. I felt the stage sway a bit, but I thought it had something to do with
    the drugs, Ha ha.

Q. WHAT SONGS DID YOU PLAY?
PB. 'Tired', 'Hands', 'Float', 'Pure', 'Hate Urself', 'Teeth' 'Mongoloid',
and 'Hole Of Your Head'. Then the extra number was 'Wake Me'. Nine songs
    in about thirty minutes.

Q. WHEN DID YOU START AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
PB. All of us have played individually in different bands for about fifteen
years, but we've existed as Mouth for a year now. We're from Stockholm,
though three of us are originally from Gothenburg. Outside Mouth, Bengt
plays a lot of jazz, samba, he knows every latin music stuff there is,
in Rio, Brazil and Hans makes music for commercials.

Q. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT PLAYING IN A BAND?
PB. Fredrik works with film. Commercials as well. He has worked with
[Amaldovar], Bo Holmberg and Herman Lindqvist in Spain for example.
He had to translate for Lindqvist, who didn't know any spanish, Ha ha.
He's on his way to Portugal to continue working with film. He's also
a program producer at EFTI. Hans studied to become a designer in Paris
and now he designes clothes for theaters. He won a price for his designs
in 93 as well. Bengt also works with film. Sort of a film researcher you
    might say.
HC. Didn't Peter telly what he does? Peter? Ha ha, okay, than, he's
    a musician.

Q. WHY THE NAME MOUTH?
FJ. Because it's the most vital and useful organ! We kind of look at it
    as a human loudspeaker.
HC. Sex... Ha ha.

Q. HOW ABOUT RELEASES?
PB. We've released a single called "Pure" (3 songs) and recently an EP
called "Float" with 'Tired', 'Float', 'Mongoloid' and one more song,
which seems really hard to get hold of. We saw it in some stores in
Stockholm once, but never since. Telegram distributes it... The full-
length, "Inner Peace", is released in September.

Q. WHAT DO YOU CALL YOUR MUSIC STYLE?
FJ. Pop. But it is such a widely used word these days... Fast guitar pop
    is probably a better description.

Q. ARE YOU TOURING RIGHT NOW?
PB. Sort of. We're playing in Karlstad on the 19th [May], Kalmar with Kent on
the 20th and in Gothenburg at Underground on the 27th. Then on the 7th
of June, there's a big Telegram party in Stockholm, at BZ, where we play
    with Popsicle and Souls.

Q. HOW ABOUT INFLUENCES / SONGWRITING?
A. Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Helium (from the U.S.), Pixies,
David Bowie, Lou Reed, Zappa, Velvet Underground.

Q. WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO RIGHT NOW?
A. Breeders, Frank Black, who really limps with his productions, but
kept doing it as long as it worked. In the end he had to change though.
HC. PJ Harvey, Hole, the latest Whale is really good.

Q. ANY SWEDISH BANDS YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
FJ. Dipper, from Lund. And Olle Ljungstr|m.
A. Souls and Popsicle. Cardigans as well.
FJ. _Not_ Cardigans!

Q. YOU'RE SIGNED TO TELEGRAM RECORDS. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?
A. Well, we sent them a demo, and they liked it. That's about it.
Hansi Friberg [who was with them] takes care of our gigs.
HF. Yes, I handle Mouth, Green, Cloudberry Jam and Pinko Pinko.

Q. HAVE YOU BEEN FEATURED IN THE PRESS/TV/MEDIA?
PB. We've made a video for 'Float', which probably will be shown on Z-Tv
next week (on Tryck Till), and a week after that on MTV. We haven't seen
it yet, but we felt it was good when we made it. KENPFF Foundation made
it, with Jocke Kenpff as director and Lotta Suarez as producer. We've
also made a video for 'Pure' in New York. You'll be able to see that
one on TV in august if all goes well. We'll be the "Single of the month"
in Sound Affects in the issue after the next issue, or the next issue
after that one. Keep your eyes open! Linda Norrman wrote an article about
us in Expressen [31 march 1995, Fredag, Page 9] and put us on her "Best
Right Now" list. That's great for us, though it came out a bit early
because the Float EP was really a demo then, and the EP was not to be
released for a couple of weeks. Well well...

Q. WHAT FESTIVALS WILL YOU BE PLAYING THIS YEAR?
PB. We're sure of Arvikafestivalen [21-22 July] and Hultsfredsfestivalen
[10-12 August] (at Stora Dans) now. Then there's the Tullakrok festival
in [ngelholm [22-23 July] which is about 99% sure.

Q. HAVE YOU HAD ANY GIGS OUTSIDE SWEDEN YET?
PB. We played in New York about four weeks ago at Nightingale, Mercury
Lounge and Brownies. That was really a Self-confidence-boost! We're
going back there for three weeks from the 17th of June for a couple
    of gigs.

Q. ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO FINISH THIS INTERVIEW WITH?
HC. If you get a chance, go and see the ORB! When they played at Gino
[Stockholm], not long ago, the music was so loud and everything was
so airy-fairy that you never knew when the music started or ended.
    It was fantastic!
A. One of the toughest gigs we've been to must have been the Soundgarden,
Rollins Band, Frank Black etc. concert in Stockholm last winter.
It was worth the pain afterwards though.

[At this time, they start discussing the similarities between Whale,
Portishead and Tricky, and the somewhat lenghty interview is at an end.]

I'm right here... Just a bit too busy (as usual...).

Anyway, I pretty much agree on everything Marten said about the BoS and Salt
gigs, except that I've *never* been bored by a BoS gig...
Salt were surprisingly good, and I'll probably try to get hold of a copy of
their album too.

Bought the new Mouth EP yesterday. Opposed to what they said in that
interview, I've seen it in quite a lot of stores. Second hand stores at least.
Anyway, it's really good. 4 more or less caotic songs in less than 8 minutes.

Hi!

Saw the awesome Bob Hund yesterday in Haninge, Festival.
Played lots of new songs, loved them all.

What about:

Gilleleje (New intro)
Goddag - Adj|
Att tala {r kvicksilver
Du {r lurad (X+Y)
I st{llet f|r musik - F|rvirring
Vem vill bliva stor (old but never released)

and live favourites like:
5 meter upp i luften
Idioten
L{nge, l{nge
Fotoalbum
100 }r

etc, etc.

Great concert all in all. (Although they seemed a bit strained, maybe they
wasn't comfortable with the sound?).

Subject: the Bear Quartet "Flux Detail" EP

I bought the new EP from the Bear Quartet today , but I forgot the cat.
number.... I'll check that up later if someone need it.

Anyway it's entitled "Flux Detail" and the songs are:
1. Flux Detail
2. Electric Chair
3. The Last Ball
4. On the earth but not at home
5. Break the breaker's part
6. Star Canal

the first track, is taken from the cd "everybody else" and is one of the
more family affairish tracks on it, the next track is a new one, the organ
sound gives a little bit of a stereolab feel over it. third is the last
ball, the 3rd release of this song, in another remix. On earth but not at
home and star canal fits well in with the new sound of the Bear Quartet,
guitar pop with synth sounds... Break the breaker's part is a lo-fi
fashioned piece recorded by Matti alone in his bedroom, a very nice song.

I'd say this is their best EP yet. 4 unreleased songs makes it worth the
money too.

Subject: Eggstone single

Hi there,

Obviously there is a new Eggstone single out: It's not the rain. But is
it available in Sweden? And are there other songs on it besides the
obvious one? This I'd like to know...

I had the opportunity of seeing both Bob Hund and The Cardigans, as well as
other bands at Braennbollsfestivalen in Umea 25/5-27/5. I must say: Bob
Hund has really become a professional group. The performance was really
good, as was the sound! They played a number of songs that are not on
their two CD's. Earlier stuff, maybe?

As for The Cardigans: I found them a little bit boring. It's not that I
don't like them, because I do, but their music seems better suited to my
stereo. They haven't got the energy, or the finesse, to really make it
worthwhile waiting until past midnight with aching feet and breathing
problems due to the packed locale.
