I saw them last year in Kalmar and wasn't that impressed. Maybe they're
better this year?

Oops.. sorry about the complete idiotic question after the A West Side
Discography. First, it wasn't WeCD 093 I should have asked about, second
I _own_ the WeCD 092 (that I was supposed to ask about) myself! I just
forgot to add the information to the discography when I bought it.
Anyway, I won't post the whole discography again, but the WeCD 092 is:

WeCD 092 CD5 95 Carpe Wade Spots

Heh, some days everything seems to go wrong, doesn't it?

I stumbled upon the complete set of "Volume" CDs while visiting a record
fair in Jonkoping last weekend and bought Volume Three (among others)
and found a favourite - PSYCHOTROPIC VIBRATION. The song on the Volume
Three CD, 'Jesus Timeshare Experience' is listed as their debut, and
I was wondering if someone might know what happened to them? Are they
still around? Any releases?

Subject: Poster Children

Maybe this will interest some of you on the list - I bought Poster
Children - "Junior Citizen" (1994) today (they're from the U.S.). The
reason I bought it was the amazing similarities I heard between
them and somewhat of a mix between The Bear Quartet, Carpe Wade
and Blithe in a couple of songs. One of the songs on the CD starts
off sounding just like a Mufflon 5 song even! Now don't get me
wrong here, there are only a few songs that are similar, but I
thought I'd post it to the list anyway. Maybe someone else on
the list have heard the similarities as well?

Don't rush out and buy it on the spot though - listen to it first!
The songs have a pretty wide range. If you do listen to it, the following
tracks are worth a listen:

3 - "He's My Star" (_really_ close TBQ and Blithe similarities, maybe
a bit more polished sound though. My absolute
                    favourite track on the CD)
7 - "Wide Awake" (I'd say a Blithe song with power guitars added?)

9 - "Mustaine" (Don't know why, but I could see Carpe Wade do this one)

10 - "Downwind" (A well-polished TBQ comes to my mind)

Maybe it's the vocals that reminds me of Matti's (TBQ) voice? I don't
know. They're definitely worth a listen though.

They have their own e-mail address too: posterkids@firefly.prairienet.org.

                                20-Apr-95
Review of swedish hardcore-ish Carpe Wade's latest album
                by Erik Soderstrom (chief@lysator.liu.se)

 Carpe Wade - Evidence - WeCD 094 - A West Side Fabrication 1995 - Time: 69.19

Puel Cargo Spots Before My Eyes
                    Blade Interest
                    Quit Whining Down Enter
                    Bounce Evidence
                    Captain Nemo 3 Thousand
                    Spit Mushroom Walls
                    Sick Time Out

When I listened to the "Spots" EP a couple of weeks ago, I was really
worried Carpe Wade would go soft on me. Even the fast and guitar hitting
"Spots Before My Eyes" had an eerie feeling that kept me thinking 'now!
give me guitar walls now!', but that never happened. When I wanted more,
there was less.

Fortunately, Evidence removed all my fears. It's Carpe Wade at their
best. I almost dare to say it's _better_ than anything they've released
before. Hard, raw, tough and screaming. Even "Spots Before My Eyes"
have been re-recorded, and now _with_ the guitars that were missing on
the EP.

It's not a clean album though. There's still evidence of influences
from Red Hot Chili Peppers in, just, 'Evidence'. RHCP-bass mixed with
Eddie Vedder-vocals in 'Mushroom Walls'. 'Blade' is just fantastic.
Heavy though it's slow. 'Interest' is really not interesting at all.
Machine-gun guitars and somewhat of a drum solo (!) in 'Quit Whining'.
A chorus that could make Henry Rollins press charges in 'Down Enter'.
Soft vocals between firewalls of guitars like in 'Captain Nemo'.
Metallica-like guitar-hits mixed with beautiful riffs here and there
in '3 Thousand'. Thin, disted vocals together with music that follows
an ingenious missing red thread only to burst out into raging elephant
noise in 'Sick'. And it all ends with 'Time Out' which is a 24 minute
and 24 second extra studio time to play with. And they do play with it.

The CD also includes 'Spit' re-recorded from it's original (which
is found on the A West Side Fabrication compilation "We're All Part of
a Family", WeCD 073, 1994) with added guitar power, guitar riffs and
screaming voices which makes it feel rawer than before.

Carpe Wade is back with their best album yet.

Personal rating: 4 (out of 5)

I'm seem to remember that Belly are supposed to play at Roskilde... (Damn)
They did put on hell of a show tonight... Don't miss them at Roskilde

Well maybe I should keep me mouth shut about non-scandinavian bands on this

What are the rules, Eric? Is it "allowed" to speak about non-Scandinavian

Does anybody have any new info on the Roskilde festival? All I know is
that R.E.M., Live and the Cranberries will be there (Three BIG reasons
for being there!) and that the tickets here in Sweden costs 740 SEK.

In denmark they are on Cloudland, in UK on Che. Actually the band are half

They have an full length album out ("Done") and a mini album ("Crayon"), plus
a couple of singles in UK. Maybe they're up to something new soon... I heard

Hello !

Nice to see some action on this list - I hope we can keep up the flow
of the messages!

According to Erik S|derstr|m:

* Included in the list below: Archers of Loaf, Band of Susans, Boo Radleys,
* Elastica, Gene, PJ Harvey, Monster Magnet, Portishead, Radiohead, Salad,
* Bettie Serveert, Stone Roses, Sultans of Ping, Weezer.

Does anyone have idea if any of these bands will play even one single
gig in Finland??!!! At least a Boo Radleys performance would be
much appreciated around here! And I wouldn't mind Portishead or Bettie
Serveert either... (BTW, shouldn't Bettie Serveert be sorted under
'B', as it is the name of a band? That is, if the list was meant to be
in alphabetical order... heh, what a nit-picker I am!)

No,no and no.
Sebadoh's european tour ends before this date, and no swedish dates were set.
This was told by Anne Slinn, Sebadoh drummer Bob Fay's girlfriend.
On the other hand I'm truly disappointed that Sebadoh keep avoiding

I have no idea. Anyone else? I compiled the lists from tour lists in
Expressen, Aftonbladet and Corren, and a Malmoe tour date was not
included in any of them. Then again, I went to see Yvonne yesterday
in Stockholm at Studion, and the only place I saw that gig listed
was on posters downtown Stockholm. The gig was excellent by the way.

They just released their second full length album Tribute To A Bus. Bought it
a few weeks ago. It's ok. Produced by Steve Albini. Not as good as I had
hoped for it to be, though. I have Done too, and the differences are pretty
small. Anyway, not something to get overly excited about...

Pavementish, Pixiesish but not very exitingish...Like Blithe, and a bunch of
other Swedish bands, the music is pretty interesting, but the vocals are just
horrible. They're supposed to great live, though.

Bought Cinnamon's debut EP yesterday btw. The acoustic tracks are pretty nice,
but the first track is simply crap. Mixed by Graham Lewis (the bass player
in Wire, if anyone remembers them...) into some kind of polished disco. Yuck..

Hi folks!

Just to let you know that if you happen to be around Tampere on
forthcoming Friday, don't miss the 'Pop-perjantai' ('Pop Friday')
night at the local YO-Talo club! There will be two bands performing,
Candy Darling and Circle. Some of you might remember my rave-ish
review of last time I saw Candy Darling (if you don't check it out
from the list archives) and I'm truly looking forward to seeing them
again.

I can't remember if someone has ever tried to describe (let alone
define) Circle's sound on this list... that's quite a tough job, as
their music draws influences from so many different genres and
styles. Yet they have cooked up something completely of their
own... it has noisy guitar walls, groovy minimalistic, even
ambient-ish beat, some Gregorian (sp?) chanting and what not.

Each time I have seen their performance (I hesitate to use the word
'gig' here), it's been quite an experience, both musically and
visually.

But perhaps I'll go on after Friday... anyway, admission is only 22
Fmk for this extravaganza, so drop in, if you're in town.

No, you're not wrong, but I personally feel that if we are to
tolerate/encourage discussion about the Stone Roses, Oasis and other
multi million sellers, we might as well drop the 'indie' part from the
list title. It was, however, rather interesting to hear that the Archers
of Loaf are playing in Sweden soon, and very depressing to realise
that they won't be playing in Finland. Not that we're not used to that
happening... Perhaps that's why we have so many great bands of our
own? Everyone, don't miss the Circle/Candy Darling show on Friday!

UNSUBSCRIBE SCAN-INDIE

Hejsan allihopa -

I have enjoyed luriking on this list for quite a while, but since I live
in Nashville, Tennessee, it is very difficult for me to know much about any
of the Indie bands you discuss. Unfortunately, I will have to unsubscribe to
this list since I am overwhelmed with e-mail right now. However, does anyone
know of a more "Mainstream" Swedish Pop music mailing list that deals more
with artists like Marie Frediriksson, Tomas Ledin, Niklas Stromstedt,
Ratata/Mauro Stocco, Anders Glenmark, Orup, o.s.v.? If you could please
e-mail me, I would be interested in learning more about those artists.

Also, since I work in the music business in Nashville, Tennessee (yes, we do
have a LOT more than just "Country"music here!), I will be more than happy to
listen to CDs and correspond with you, and if you will be visiting Nashville,
please feel free to e-mail me, and I will be glad to help you out and show
you around Nashville. And if I can help any of you bands here in Nashville
(Jag jobbade med STIM i Stockholm i 1993, sa jag kan svenska), please feel
free to e-mail me, or visit my Music Industry bulletin board "Nashville Music
Connection" for music industry files and information (telnet: 199.190.71=2E2)

yes, that's a darn good question to ask! why is it that almost no north
american indie-bands do come up here to scandinavia?

a friend of mine who knows people at border(which imports and distributes a
lot of overseas indie-labels, like subpop, here in sweden) keeps telling me
about all these bands that are interested in comming to sweden. but, that's
where it ends as very rarely the bands really do come here to play. is it
because of not enough interest from clubs and venues, or what? is it because
of the lack of interest from the indie-kids to go see them? or is it simply
the total ignorance from the media which causes both of the above which then
leads on to the subject??? just *why*???

the latest example of this is late march when the american (and subpop
labelled) band pond where supposed to play at studion in stockholm. the
gig was even advertised and my friends and i were really getting excited
to actually be able to go and see something else than a) swedish indie-bands
(no offense though. some of them are really good live! :) ) or b) british,
so called, indie-bands. but, not very surprising, the gig was cancelled for
reasons which are unknown to me.

i don't know, but it's easy to come to the conclusion that stockholm
truly and fully sucks when it comes to gigs which involves everything but
the latest nme/mm hype and that there is absolutely no interest from
neither clubs nor indie-kids to see them. copenhagen, oslo and gothenburg
have all far better concerts when it comes to abroad-non-british-acts. i
mean, didn't a band like the jesus lizard put on something like two shows
in oslo just because of the high ticket sales? i can't imagine that to ever,
*ever* happen in stockholm! (...only drunk ex pouges-singers are able to
sell-out gino two nights in a row... ;) )

and when it comes to sebadoh i just don't simply get it. here's a band
which played lollapalooza last year and which also is one of the most
popular/good indie-bands in america today. they are fronted by a ex
dinosaur jr (which are just *loved* by the swedish press) bassist and
they even play england every once in awhile. but, do they get any attention
whatsoever in the already mentioned swedish media/press? nope, there's been
nothing. and that just pisses me off to the greatest extent, becuase, with
no attention from media, there will be no concert. it's a sad, but true fact.
it just shows how very lame swedish rock-journalism is.

sorry for wasting so much of your time if you don't care about this at
all. i, and many people i know, do though, so hopefully i am not all alone
here? i also apologize for once again talk too much about non-scandinavian
indie-bands. but, at least somehow (i keep telling myself), this topic do
have something to do with the indie-scene in scandinavia as so many indie-bands
, as well as fans, do have interest in also seeing and experiencing their
foreign (again; non-british) counterparts.

so, if you have any comments to the topic, please let us all know.

and if you have flames to be sent, please spare the list and send them
to me directly. :)

I think the media should be blamed. Most of the newspapers and evening-
papers are very mainstream. But this is natural since most people
probably are more interested in reading about Roxette and Rolling Stones,
than reading about bands they never have heard of. (I don't say I
agree with "most people" but I do understand the editor of the newspaper
who tells his journalists to write about stuff that makes the paper
more interesting to more people.)

I think that KB (Kulturbolaget) in Malmoe deservs to be mentioned too.

As for the rest of your message, I truly agree with all you have to say,
except for the fact that I generally consider Brittish indie to be
better than American alternative! ;)

My guess is that it's simply a matter of money. Sweden is
geographically big, not all that densely populated, and the amerindie
bands just won't be able to expect a good enough return for the
investment of coming here. From Germany to Copenhagen or even
Go"teborg and Malmo" are small steps, it's a bigger one to Stockholm,
and worse for Helsinki and points north.

What could cure it would be some realisation _on the part of the bands
and their promoters_ that the Swedish indie scene is much much more
healthy and independent than anywhere in Europe outside the UK. Then
if I were a member of Sebadoh or whatever, I'd _want_ to come to
Sweden, cos I could go and see Bob Hund or TBQ play and get a couple
of beers with them at the same time...

Robert, ready to stand in for Sebadoh in that role at least

I've had a theory that a lot of the record sales of these kind of bands are
imports, and not going through the normal distribution channels, and therefor
a lot of the swedish sales of in example sebadoh's records are shown in the
american and german sales charts.

I'm not saying this is right, it's just a thought.

Subject: Hi & Sthlm vs US-indie

Hi all!

Time for me to stop lurking around, heres my premiere article on this list
along with a short note on myself (the "Welcome to ScanIndie.." said it
would be appreciated)

My name is John and I live in Stockholm (except for weekdays, when I study
media&arts on the university college in Skovde...).
On the swedish indie scene my points goes to Stevepops, Naked, HDM, TBQ,
Bob Hund and and and and

Otherwise, the americans are the ones who know how to produce music that
feels. Score : Parasites, Built to spill, Sebadoh, Superchunk, Small, Small
Factory among others.

Some short notes on the current thread regarding american independent in
sthlm, from one of the fans of the north-american indie scene :

When Bracket played at Studion the other week the number of people in the
audience was easily counted. Only 50 or so cared to show up to watch this
delightful popcore combo. It didn't affect the band though, their attitude
was great, fun all the time (most english indie bands have something to
learn from their american counterparts).

Hope more people will show up when SanJose's finest, the Odd Numbers, are
playing Sthlm (Studion) in June. They play pure powerpop ,descending
straight down from Jam. Supported in Sthlm and Sandviken by fellow
powerpopsters Stevepops. This adds up to : Strongly recommended.

Changing the subject :
IMHO, only one record store really cares about importing records from
american indie labels at the time they are released. You guessed it; Freak
Scene. That's where I picked up my first Parasites records, thats where I
found the likes of Built to Spill, the Odd Numbers, Mary Lou Lord and other
great 7" vinyls (like Superchunk unplugged ("seed toss") with the 3D photo
on the cover). The other stores seem only to carry certain items (the most
obvius/popular) and you have to trust you luck to find what you're looking
for, or more important, something new and interesting.

Cheers, John.

Great! I'll add it to the list straight away! Please post information
you find/think is missing from the tour lists. I can't cover all papers

So there won't be any problems finding it around here then? It definitely
sounds like something one have to listen to after the good words on the list.

I can't speak of recorded material because I don't have anything with them,
but live, like Ludde says, they're excellent. They played here two weeks ago
and really made the place happy-happy. On the subject of vocals though, I'd
say the Pavement-likeness really talks for itself. :)

I agree with you. Maybe mentioning/announcing gigs at various places
around Scandinavia and the Baltic countries would be enough when it
comes to such bands? Or when there's some scan-indie content linked
to a non-scan-indie band it would be okay?
