I got to admit that "Hey princess" isn't on my 'do not listen to' list,
but that one is the only popsicle song I can relate to. :) Would you
for example say the same thing about the tracks on the Power Ballads E.P.?

Of course, there are far worse bands than Popsicle, but still, their
music isn't considered indie (I hope) and Popsicle's is.

I guess. I'm more for the Catherine Wheel/Ride/Curve/Slowdive sound,
and I guess Popsicle doesn't go into that category.

Screaming Guitars? Popsicle? That must surely be a misprint of some sort?

Well, I do like the Flesh Quartet for their diversity, esp. their latest
album, but are they considered "indie" out there? I'm not sure where I'd
put them, if I would try. :) Better not, maybe. I saw them when they
played here a few months ago, and it was a good concert, and a lot of
people there (which is always a 'plus').

Me neither.. I'll try to listen to it some more during the next week
though. It got moderate reviews in the press with an average of 3 (out
of 5), but one shouldn't listen to the press really.. :) I have never
heard of that Fortran 5 remix. Where? When? How? What kind of mix is that?

Yes, you are right, they are from Sweden. :) I'm not sure that I am
the right person to describe them, as the only thing I have with them
is their "Come Together" single from 1991, and I'm not sure how they
have developed since then. I suspect it is the "& Other Delights" CD
you have seen in that store. There is a copy of it in the local used
CD store here as well, and I have hesitated to buy it myself a couple
of times. :) I'd say - listen before you buy.

My email address pretty much gives away my general ignorance of the
nordic indie scene (apart from Bj**k of course), but I *would*
like to talk/hear about Bob Hund -- their album (I bought it in Stockholm
in December) is the first I've got really excited about in ages.
Firstly it is remarkable to hear a really good non-English-lyrics
band from _anywhere_, it is nothing short of astonishing that they
sound as boundary-breakingly good as they do... If there was any justice
in the world they'd be huge over here and I could go and see them live.
Apart from Bob Hund, what else I've heard has not been wonderful.
The tracks by Union Carbide Corporation, Creeps. and Trains Boats and
Planes that I heard when I was in Stockholm didn't really impress me.
Still not heard any Popsicle yet...

Boy o boy was I wrong.. :) Sorry about that. I found a bootleg tape from
a gig here in Sweden at the "Radiohuset" in Gothenburg from November 93
plus an interview with them, that I can type in, in a day or two, that
is kind of interesting. so I *do* know how they have developed since that
1991 single. :)
They played: Explosion, Starshine, Tuning The Century, Wishing,
Up The Country, Let Us Try It Out, Silver Pt.1,
L.O.V.E, I Just Waited, Fresh, Burn.
I don't know which of these are on the "& Other Delights" album, because
they say that "most of the songs are really new, and are from the forth-
coming album".. and that was November 1993. I don't think "& Other Delights"
came out after that, so most songs aren't out yet. Well, this is only
speculations of course, but if this is the case, I'd wait and buy the new
album (when it is released) because the new songs are _a lot_ better than
the older ones (they say here and there "this is from the old album..")
and those are generally.. somewhat boring songs, but again, I'm _not_ sure
when "& Other Delights" came out.
To describe their new songs: power guitars, kinda early Slowdive feeling
in the sense that it isn't really beat-by-beat-ish (type, Swervedriver,
Popsicle etc). A flowing feeling with power guitars and female vocals.
I don't know how much that helps, but that's the only way I can explain
it. :) I like the new songs anyway. And if they _are_ on "& Other Delights",
that album is worth its price.

music but i do know and like bjork, sugarcubes, stakka bo and abba (not
exactly indie, sorry). i've heard a bit of whipped cream, popsicle and easy
and they sound pretty good.
other music i like: felt, MBV, primal scream (nearly anything on creation),
public enemy, cypress hill, 60s motown, beatles, stones, cilla black, frank
sinatra, loop, JAMC, take that, 2unlimited, curve, pj harvey, boo radleys,
suede, bowie, pulp, smiths, new order, the fall, glitter band, the temptations,
etc, etc, etc,......................

As always, I guess it depends on what you like to put in the word indie.
If you refer to the classic indie sound (lots of guitars etc,
Ride-style), or the abstract indie, as in "not mainstream/major label".

The Fortran 5 mix is supposed to be on the regular single. Reportedly
it's very techno-like. No guitars in other words.

Not that it matters much at the moment, since the used CD copy that
inspired my question in the first place was good and gone... damn!

This is mostly a wild guess, having only heard one song off the "Power
Ballads", but at least it doesn't give a representative picture of the
band's sound, maybe. I think that most of their output is closer to
the heavenly "Hey Princess" - give them another chance, Erik! :-)

Of course the definition of 'indie' is vague, to say the least. As
far as I am concerned there are several bands that can be describe as
'indie bands' who have failed miserably at what Popsicle do with great
success.

Maybe the song "Twisterella" is the closest any of these bands have
come to Popsicle.
I admit that it's quite difficult to put a finger on one particular
factor which makes Popsicle so great. All I can say is that their
glorious mixture of sweet melodies and loud guitar sound (which is
maybe not as feedback-driven or effects-heavy as some of the bands
eg. in the above list) is perfect to make me jump around in my room,
playing the air guitar and singing along...at least when there is
nobody else around :-)
I don't want to sound as if I'm on a campaign to convert the whole
world into Popsicle fanatics, of course I understand that it's not
everybody's cup of tea or something.

Hi !
I happened to read somewhere that Pleasurehouse was a Swedish band. And
their EP "This is how it feels" (something to do with the Inspiral Carpets
song ?) is at a very cheap price in my usual record store.
Is it worth buying ? What does the band sound like ? Have they released
anything else ?

This new singel is nothing like techno, it sounds like early New Order and
it's greate.

That's curious... I saw them opening for House of Love three years ago, at
the time of their first album, and they didn't sound like New Order at all.
The singer was a pale copy of the Stone Roses singer, with the same kind of
head and body movements and with quite a poor voice :-) Their music was
very common Ride/Chapterhouse/MBV-oriented noisy pop, which was not a bad
thing after all. After this album, they completely disappeared from France
at least and now I'm happy to learn that they have a new release. Did they
record anything else in these last 3 years ?
I don't think they're an unforgettable live band but their first album was
quite pleasant.

From what I've heard the New Order-ish sound is "confined" to the Fortran
5 remix on the single. Reportedly, the album sounds pretty much like what
you would expect with guitars and everything.

It's only the singel that sounds like New Order. The album sounds like
before, but better. The reason why they have been gone for 3 years is
that they had some trouble with the record company.

Has anyone heard the compilation CD _He Didn't Even Draw a Fish on my
Shower Curtain_? I think there are some tracks by bands from the
Scandinavian countries. It's a really excellent compilation of psychedelia
and some covers.

Hmm - interesting. Just checked a listing of San Francisco Bay Area
shows. Saw this:
Feb 25 Pop Sickle Bottom of the Hill - SF
Feb 26 Popsicle Gilman Street - Berkeley
I checked another add that indicated Pop Sickle is on CZ Records. This
is a Seattle based label I believe.
The Bottom of the Hill is an "alternative" club in SF. Gilman is pretty
much the only true "punk" club in the Bay Area - home to Green Day among
others. It's kind of like a co-op that you have to belong to to gain
admission. Ain't much of a thing - just cost an extra $1 to belong. By
accepting membership you have to agree to the rules. The club was
originally formed by Tim Yohannon of Maximum Rock & Roll fame.
I suspect what we have here is a band that's not the Scandinavian Popsicle
that gets it's name frequently mis-printed.

We've discussed Popsicle, a band I never new existed till I
got on this list. Howzabout any info on Blithe, a Swedish
band who I first heard on the John Peel show a couple of
months ago doing what sounded like a great Jonathan Richmond
type 2 minute track called Bike Helmet which was great. I've
also heard another track called Plush Boy?! and they did a
Peel Session this weekend. None of it was half as good as
Bike Helmet I thought. Anyone care to tell me more about
their releases?

Asko Keranen: keyboards, bass
Espe Haverinen: drums, vocals
Riku Mattila plays various instruments on the records he
has produced and he is considered the fourth member of
the group by them when they are in the studio.

Some 22-Pistepirkko songs have appeared on various
compilations, but they are ignored unless they are
tracks or versions that are otherwise unavailable.
This discography has (so far) information only about

Subject: new Bear Quartet CD EP 'Revisited'
Hi!
Today I read a free magazine called 'city nytt' which comes out in all the
coast cities in Norrland. (Sundvall, Umea, Skelleftea, Pitea, Lulea).
They had a presentation of many of all those bands coming out of this region.
Where they mentioned a new CD EP from the Bear Quartet called 'Revisited'
which should have been released recently. Anyone seen this in the shops?
(I searched for it in all the record shops here in Lulea and couldn't find
it.. And they usually use to have it on the same day as it is released...)
However this magazine had short articles about bands like A Shrine, Stardog,
Puffin, Honeymoons (?), BQ Randy, Blithe. And also these more mainstreamish
bands like Popsicle, This Perfect Day and Wannadies.

Subject: Recent ramblings
I'm back!
Where I've been? :) Okay, I've been away for the last week, going
to some concerts (Just D and Charlatans), having some personal..
things to do. Life gets that way sometimes. Some things just to
start things though:
To those who have tried to subscribe the last week - I'm sorry.
Haven't been able to add or remove anyone from the list, but now,
everything should be fixed. (I had almost 300 letters in my mailbox
when I got back home!)
Regarding Easy: I've bought both the album (Sun Years) and the
Fortran 5 mix (Listen To The Bells), and I'll reply to the messages
that were posted earlier regarding them asap.
Regarding Pleasurehouse: Yes, I have info, interviews and whatnot.
I'll post that info as well, asap.
Other swedish indie bands: I've bought two new compilations with
loads of new swedish indie, and will write a bit about them asap.
The Digest version will also be sent out asap. (2 issues or more
I think).
Don't remember right now what else I was supposed to write, but
anyways. Keep posted, and post. :)
