From archive (archive) Subject: upcoming novels from Gene Wolfe From: donn@cs.utah.edu Date: 23 Jul 87 09:01:25 GMT From: donn@cs.utah.edu (Donn Seeley) >From the Readercon program book (notes by Wolfe): EMPIRES OF FOLIAGE AND FLOWER: The story of the green and yellow empires mentioned by Severian. It concerns a child who is taken in tow by the wizard Thyme and shown something of war and the destiny of man. To be published by Cheap Street, late June or early July 1987. [A pamphlet? -- DMS] THE URTH OF THE NEW SUN: Coda to THE BOOK OF THE NEW SUN. To appear in hardcover from Tor, Fall 1987. THERE ARE DOORS: A contemporary fantasy about a department store clerk who falls in love with a goddess from an alternate universe and finds himself drawn into that universe, where the goddess manifests herself as a lawyer, a movie star, and a high-tech doll. To appear in hardcover from Tor, Fall 1988. SOLDIER OF ARETE: Sequel to SOLDIER OF THE MIST. To appear in hardcover from Tor, Fall 1989. CASTLEVIEW: The villainness is Morgan Le Fay, and the hero is a Lincoln Mercury dealer. In progress; unsold. I got the impression that THERE ARE DOORS is already written, but SOLDIER OF ARETE hasn't been started yet. Are we really going to have to wait over a year to see DOORS in hardcover? Wolfe has certainly become more prolific since he started writing full-time, Donn Seeley University of Utah CS Dept donn@cs.utah.edu 40 46' 6"N 111 50' 34"W (801) 581-5668 utah-cs!donn PS -- Yes, I've promised myself that I'd write a Readercon con report, but this weekend I'll be out in the Great Basin National Park, and next weekend I'll be in the Wind River Range, and... Ain't summer great? So I thought I'd pass on this Wolfe data before it got too stale. From archive (archive) Subject: Author Lists: Gene Wolfe From: JWenn.ESAE@XEROX.COM Date: 18 Apr 89 12:33:29 GMT Gene Wolfe. His early work is mixed ("The Fifth Head of Cerberus" is recommended, and I also liked "Peace", but that's an individual quirk). Coming into the 1980's is where he really shines. "The Book of the New Sun". Words fail me. It's just amazing, for the use of language if nothing else. After that, it becomes even more subjective than usual. I rather like "Soldier of the Mist", but I'm withholding judgement until the series is complete. Of all his story collections (and I haven't read his recent ones), "The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories" is the best. The beginning Wolfe reader should probably start on "The Island of Doctor Death..." or "The Fifth Head of Cerberus", before going on to "The Shadow of the Torturer" or other works. Personally, I must be in the correct frame of mind to read Wolfe. This is stuff that you have to pay attention to when you read, not skim over for entertainment. But the rewards make it worth all the effort. Give him a try. [C] == Short Story Collection. [CP] == Chapbook (a very short book, or pamphlet)..
