Stanley Weinbaum had his first SF story published in  the July 1934 issue
of _Wonder Stories_.  He died in December of 1935.  But in those few short
months, he helped transform SF from gimicky inventions with cardboard
characters to fiction with realistic people, alien aliens and decent prose.
His first story was "A Martian Odyssey" a good adventure staring Tweel,
probably the first major alien character who didn't act like a man in a
funny suit.  All of his stories are quite readable today (even if some have
dated).  "The Best of Stanley G. Weinbaum" is an excellent place to get
acquainted with this pioneering author.
