From archive (archive) Subject: Author Lists: Charles de Lint From: JWenn.ESAE@XEROX.COM Date: 24 Nov 89 11:25:50 GMT Charles de Lint is one of the foremost writers of "fantasy-set-in-a-contemporary-setting". I've read 9/12 of his books (I've missed "Jack the Giant-Killer" and the two chapbooks), and I've enjoyed them all. A good beginning book is "Greenmantle". I haven't had the chance to catch up with Charles, or with the House of SF (our local aficionado bookshop), and so can't verify all the details; when I do, I'll repost this list with any necessary changes. The reason that many of his books have been out of print is one of those long publishing sagas, too boring to go into here. Charles has managed to reacquire the rights to the earlier works, and we can expect to see them back in print eventually. The chapbooks, individually bound novellas for the most part, are being put out in beautiful short run editions by Axolotl (Pulphouse) press, and are well worth acquiring if you can find them. Charles has also done one of their author's choice volumes, but I don't have the details to hand (lent my copy, wouldn't you know!) Charles de Lint is an Ottawa resident, and many of his stories are set in a somewhat fictionalized contemporary Ottawa. Extra insights for those of us who live there. He is also a celtic musician of no mean talent, which may help to explain the music in his writings. If any of you are extremely serious about acquiring copies of his works, your best bet is probably to contact our local SF heaven, and talk to Roger Turner or Pat Cavan: The House of Speculative Fiction 105 Fourth Avenue Mon-Thu: 10:00 - 6:00 Ottawa, Ontario Fri: 10:00 - 9:00 CANADA K1S 2L1 Sat: 9:30 - 5:30 (613) 235-6517 Eastern Time As ever, I welcome corrections and additions to this list. So here it is... The following is information from a sheet handed out by the National Library of Canada when Charles de Lint was there to launch his new book, _Memory & Dream_, read from that book, and perform a concert with the band he is with ("Jump at the Sun"). [As a note, to give you some idea of how important this book is, his editor and Tom Doherty from Tor were both up from NYC for the event!]. The sheet was prepared by Sharon Shipley for the reading by Charles de Lint at the National Library of Canada, September 20, 1994. A Brief Bio of Charles de Lint: =============================== A musician and writer who was born as a Canadian citizen in the Netherlands, Charles de Lint established himself as a prolific writer of fantasy during the 1980s. More recently, he has also been a significant and original contributor to the subgenre of contemporary fantasy. A prolific writer, he is as comfortable with the short story as he is with the novelet, novella and novel. Since 1979, Charles de Lint has been the publisher and editor of Triskell Press in Ottawa, which has published numerous chapbooks in his Cerin Songweaver tales. In 1984, de Lint received the William L. Crawford Award for Best New Fantasy Author presented annually by the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts, and, in 1988, the Casper Award [now called the Aurora Award] for Best Work in English for his highly successful novel _Jack, the Giant Killer_. Since 1970, de Lint has also been active as a musician first in Wickentree, a Celtic band, and currently with another Celtic group, "Jump at the Sun". "In his most successful novels, he has succeeded in fusing the kingdoms of Faery with modern Canadian landscapes, producing a variety of urban fantasy, which can be very satisfying to those who reject the notion that all such stories require a greenwood setting. And yet de Lint's early published fantasies were very much in that mould." -- Maureen Speller, "Charles de Lint", _Twentieth-Century Science-Fiction Writers_ (Chicago: St. James Press, 1991), p. 197. Charles de Lint on His Own Work: ================================ "My prime interest as a writer is to explore the complexities of human relationships through mythic/folkloric material against a mostly contemporary urban setting. I see the juxtaposing of the two as a way of exaggerating the dichotomy of our relationships with each other and our environment. Though I home primarily to tell a story that will entertain my readers, I also want to do what I can to illuminate the pitfalls of abusive relationships, a failing environment and the like, while at the same time remind my readers of the wonder and mystery and meaning to be found in life. How well I succeed only they can decide." -- Quoted by Maureen Speller, "Charles de Lint", _Twentieth-Century Science-Fiction Writers_ (Chicago: St. James Press, 1991), p. 197. Those attending CAN-CON (May 12th to 14th, 1995) will receive invitations to the opening ceremonies (where a few notable people are expected to show up), and will be able to preview the exhibit before it opens to the public the following week. The exhibit will include sub-exhibits based on both a history of the genre and specific topics related to it. There will be everything from books to audio to multi-media computer presentations and is the first time anything like it has been done in Canada (and possibly elsewhere). The Merrill Collection will also be involved with the exhibit itself. Call 613-596-4105; write to CAN-CON, P.O. Box 5752, Merivale Depot, Nepean, Ontario, K2C 3M1; or e-mail to cancon@diana.ocunix.on.ca for more information on CAN-CON (lots of other stuff will be happening in addition to our involvment with the National Library).
