From archive (archive) Subject: Author Lists: Hal Clement From: JWenn.ESAE@XEROX.COM Date: 16 Feb 89 09:57:53 GMT Hal Clement writes HARD hard SF. His science is meticulously accurate. Most of his novels deal with very odd worlds, and the consequences of them (high gravity, low temperature, ...). "Mission of Gravity", "Needle" and "The Best of Hal Clement" are all ones I've read and can recommend. But (as with many hard SF authors), his prose style can grate. Reportedly, his latest efforts show improvement. [C] == Short Story Collection. According to my references he was a science teacher at Milton Academy for a large portion of his life. I admit that I have no idea what kind of an educational establishment the Milton Academy is, but it doesn't sound much like a university. In his own words he has acknowledged that "Mission of Gravity" has science that can be proven impossible, but he has taken considerable pleasure in the fact that people have indeed made the effort to perform the analysis, and that it needed computer modelling to do it. He also points out that the 37 year old Easy Hoffman of "Star Light" is indeed the 12 year old Easy Rich of "Close to Critical". As ever, I welcome corrections and additions to this list.
