Preface to the Electronic Edition

Harald Wieselgren worked at the Royal Library in Stockholm. He was also one of the editors of the major Swedish biographic encyclopedia of his time, and wrote articles for the Swedish magazine Ny Illustrerad tidning.

The title of the book presented here translates into "from our times". It appeared in 1880 and contains 50 obituaries out of the more than 500 (so claims the foreword) that he had written for this magazine over the years 1865-1880. In a time when the telegraph had not yet experienced any competition from the telephone, when there was no television, film, or radio, and when daily newspapers seldom or never had any pictures, the illustrated magazine with its carefully carved xylographic portraits was a very important mass medium. Railroads permitted its rapid distribution over the country.

The articles describe people that were important to society, such as bishops and inventors, often having a remarkable background from small circumstances, self-made men. There is only one woman among the 50 portraits.

The work is in the public domain. The text is written by Harald Wieselgren (1835-1906). The portraits are cut by the three xylographers Edward Skill (1831-1873), Ida Falander (1842-1927) and Evald Hansen (1840-1920).

The 218 text pages and 50 non-paginated illustrations are presented as scanned images. If time permits, and interest is sufficient, text versions of some articles may be provided later. The scanned images are presented as 100 dpi grayscale GIF, downsampled from 600 dpi bitonal TIFF images.

All 50 obituaries are linked back and forth to the corresponding articles in Project Runeberg's presentations of Nordic Authors.

The 6.8 x 9.8 inch cover image was scanned in 200 dpi, 256 colors. The inline image above is scaled down to 1:5, corresponding to 40 dpi.
