A Swedish expeditionary force, supported by heavy naval units, was stationed at Aland during the winter 1917/1918. The aim of this expedition was ostensibly to preserve peace on the islands by disarming both sides (the Red and the White) in a potential civil war. This was done; however, I would imagine (although that was not said) that this was also intended to emphasize Swedish interest in, or claims to, the Aland islands.

In early 1918 a relatively strong German force, supported by two battleships, was sent to the Aland archipelago, on the invitation of the Finish government. The Swedish forces quickly whitdrew after the arrival of the Germans. To my knowledge, there have not been any Swedish troops on Aland later than the early months of 1918.

In the early twenties Sweden and Finland agreed to take the question of the Aland islands to the International Court. A referendum had shown that a majority of the population favoured an attachment to Sweden. The court nevertheless awarded the islands to Finland, on the condition that a large measure of self-government should be guaranteed. Both Sweden and Finland respected the ruling of the court.
