The Tenth Anniversary of the Death of Olof Palme -- February 28, 1996

On February 28, 1986 Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme was gunned down on a Stockholm street, as he was walking home from a cinema with his wife. While there are various theories about who could have been behind the murder, the identity of the culprit remains a mystery.

Radio Sweden has marked the anniversary of the assasination of Olof Palme with a series of special programs.

Who was Olof Palme? What were the qualities which made him the most famous Swedish statesman of our time? Sarah Roxström has a brief profile:

On the tenth anniversary of the Palme murder on a Stockholm street, an act which shocked the nation and, some now say, marked the end of an epoch in Swedish political life, Jim Downing and Azariah Kiros present Olof Palme, the man, the politician and the statesman, and discuss his life, his controversial role in international affairs and his political legacy with political scientist and Palme friend Professor Olof Ruin.

Gaby Katz reports on the still fruitless hunt for Palme's killer. With no murder weapon found and conflicting witness reports, the facts surrounding Prime Minister Olof Palme's assassination remains a mystery. She talked to the man heading the investigation, Police Superintendent Hans Ölvebro.

What was Olof Palme's legacy? How do his ideas of a middle way between Capitalism and Communism, and solidarity with the Third World, fit into today's post-Cold War world? Al Simon reports.

Ten years later, how did the assassination of Olof Palme affect the average Swede? Gaby Katz asked on the streets of Stockholm.
