Your parents spent Christmas and New Year's in Hawaii? 2 Miki: Yup. Thanks to that, we didn't have any New Year's dishes or anything. It didn't feel like New Year's at all to me. Meiko: Did you have o-zouni*? <*Commentary: is a dish--rice cakes in a vegetable soup--that is commonly eaten on New Year's.> Miki: Well, I looked at a cookbook and *did* make it, but Yuu scoffed at it... Meiko: It was difficult for you in all sorts of ways, huh. 3 Miki: Yeah, but for hatsumoude*, Yuu and I went to the local shrine... And the 2 weeks, in its own way, were fun. <*Commentary: is the first visit to a shrine in the New Year.> Meiko: I see. And so, what happened with Ginta? ===Underbar=== FREE TALK (2): Sometimes, when I'm talking with my friends, the subject of video games comes up (people who have siblings, sure enough, know about it well), but since I don't have an SNES and I have no interest in RPG*, I can seldom take part in the conversation. <*Translation note: "RPG" is "role-playing games". is "Super Famicon," i.e., the make of video game system marketed by Nintendo as SNES in the US.> But I also really like Tetris-type things and action and shooting (though I have no skill at it...) and when I want to flee from work, I play on a GameBoy. But, being really no good at it, y'know, I like the "Tom & Jerry" and "Crayon Shin-chan" games, but I can't make it to the end at all... I'm especially frustrated by the "Field Trip" level of stage 2 in Shin-chan's... What's more, that mini-game called "Start Looking for Shiro!" within the game-- what's what? To the people who could clear all the levels to the end, please, by all means, give me some tips. --------------------------------------------------- p 46 1 Miki: Ahhh... Yeah. Miki: That's just it, isn't it... 2 3 4 narration: The new school term... It's finally arrived. narration: Ahhhh. narration: Meeting Miki... I'm SCARED!! 5 narration: If you don't choose me, then I'll date Suzuki-san. narration: It's all up to you. narration: Back then, I was only being pushy and bluffed like that... narration: But that was a bad idea after all, huh. --------------------------------------------------- p 47 1 narration: She doesn't answer = She's still undecided = That means there's still hope! narration: But I said something to make her rush to a conclusion. Ginta: (Ahhhh. What'll I do?!) Ginta: (I don't like being kept in a state of suspense either, but if I'm flatly rejected, I won't be able to recover...) Miki: Ginta. 2 Ginta FX: 3 Ginta: H-HI, MIKI! GOOD MORNING! commentary at margin: Unnaturally loud voice ---> 4 Miki: I have to talk to you... Miki: ...for a bit. 5 Ginta: S-- Ginta FX: Ginta: Sure... --------------------------------------------------- p 48 1 Miki: Umm... 2 Miki: I like you a lot, Ginta. 3 4 Ginta: R-really!?! Miki: But, I like Yuu, too. 5 --------------------------------------------------- p 49 1 Miki: I like both of you a lot. And so... Miki: With my feelings split like this, I can't very well go out with you, Ginta. Miki: A girlfriend who's also interested in another guy... Even you wouldn't like that, would you, Ginta? 2 Ginta: I-- I wouldn't mind!! While you're going out with me you'll forget all about that guy-y-y! 3 4 Miki: Because we're living in the same house. Even if I didn't want to, I'd be running into him every day... Ginta: ...... B-but... --------------------------------------------------- p 50 1 Miki: And so... Please go out with Arimi-san... 2 3 Miki: To tell you the truth, the thought of you being taken away by Arimi-san...is unpleasant. I think I'd be terribly jealous. But that's me being selfish, isn't it. 4 Miki: I don't have the right to tie you down, Ginta, and interfere with your chance to have a wonderful girlfriend... Ginta: M-Miki! That's not it-t-t! --------------------------------------------------- p 51 1 Miki: ? Ginta: Ah! I mean... 2 Ginta: (I--) hypothetical Miki: Ehhhh?! A lie?! That's cru-u-uel! To fool me... That's the pits! hypothetical Miki FX: hypothetical Miki: I *hate* you, Ginta! Ginta: (I can't say it...) 3 Miki: Your true feelings made me awfully happy, Ginta... Thank you. I can't respond--I'm sorry. Miki: Even if you get a girlfriend, let's continue to be good friends, 'kay! 4 Ginta: Ah... Uhh, Miki Miki: Bye. I'll be going now! 5 Ginta: Mi...... --------------------------------------------------- p 52 1 narration: Y-- You gotta be kidding... Why is it turning out this way?! Ginta: ~~~~~~ narration: This isn't funny-y-y! 2 Ginta: (Ahhhh. I shouldn't have played such a cheap trick.) (It wasn't supposed to turn out this way!) (MIKI-I-I-I!!) 3 --------------------------------------------------- p 53 1 narration: This is the decision I came up with after thinking about it over all of winter break. 2 narration: With this... narration: It's okay, right... --------------------------------------------------- p 54 1 Miki: Hey, hey, Meiko! What are we gonna eat toda-a-ay? 2 Miki: Maybe it's cake, after all. Ah! But o-shiruko* is good, too, huh. <*Commentary: A (sweet) red bean soup with rice cake.> Meiko: Miki... 3 Meiko: Keeping it to yourself is bad for your health. Why don't you just let yourself be depressed? 4 5 Miki: But I was acting so cheerful! How come you knew? Miki FX: Meiko: Your cheerfulness wasn't natural. 6 Meiko: ...... I wonder if I was wrong? Miki: Huh? --------------------------------------------------- p 55 1 Meiko: I'd been thinking that, more and more, you've been attracted to Matsuura-kun, Miki... And that it would be nice if the two of you became a couple... 2 Meiko: It's just that Matsuura-kun was a fresh experience for you, Miki, so you were strongly attracted to him for a little while... Meiko: And maybe all you really needed from Ginta was someone who was always nearby, and there for you in a normal kind of way... 3 4 Miki: C-c'mon... Miki: Don't say stuff like that! Meiko: Ah! 5 Meiko: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I was only talking. Forget about it, 'kay!?! --------------------------------------------------- p 56 1 Miki: I'm worrying about it-t-t! Meiko: Ahhhh. I'm sorry-y-y. narration: The one I really needed was Ginta...? narration: Even though she tells me that... narration: Even if that's true... narration: It's already too late... 2 3 4 narration: Sunday afternoon... --------------------------------------------------- p 57 1 narration: A shop that I like... narration: Shopping leisurely by myself... narration: It should be a time that I love, but it's no fun at all. 2 narration: No matter what I see, my heart is without joy. There isn't anything I want at all. Miki: (I'm feeling terribly down somehow. I'm seriously ill.) 3 narration: Today, of all days, when I called Meiko, she wasn't in... 4 5 narration: I'll go home... ===Sidebar=== FREE TALK (3): Recently, I was invited by some friends, and now I've started going to see plays done by a theatrical group called "Caramel Box". They're simple, modern plays that are full of gags and wind up with a touching, happy ending. They're extremely amusing, but there are quite a few holes in the script (the development of this is a bit unnatural...) and (this character's psychological development is missing something) and in many other parts, too. But all of the actors are appealing, and they're a splendid troupe that certainly made me feel like seeing their next performance, too. I especially liked Uekawa Takaya-san* . <*Commentary: An alternate kanji reading could give for the surname.> His role of Kouhei-kun, in "In April, She'll..." was good, wasn't it. --------------------------------------------------- p 58 1 narration: Maybe I'll feel a little better if I go home and see Yuu's face... sign: JR line <---Ticket Machines 2 3 Arimi: Oh! Miki-san! 4 Miki: ...... Arimi-san. Miki: (I didn't want to see her now, did I...) Arimi: For a moment there, I didn't recognize you-u-u. You let your hair down today, hm. It's cute . 5 Miki: Yeah, since it's cold. Miki: In the winter, outside of school, I often... Arimi: ...... So it's not for fashion, but because of the cold. 6 Miki: That's a large bag. Arimi: Ahh. That's because I'm going to stay at a friend's place right now... --------------------------------------------------- p 59 1 2 Arimi: That friend... Who do you think it is? 3 Miki heartbeat FX: 4 Miki: C-- Could it be... Miki: ...Ginta? Arimi: That's right. Suou-kun. --------------------------------------------------- p 60 1 Arimi: He said, "My parents won't be around tonight, and no one's here, so come over!" It's the first time I'm staying over at a guy's place, so my heart's pounding. 2 3 Arimi: Ju-u-ust kidding! It's a joke! A joke! Arimi: No matter what... Arimi: Actually, it's a girl in my class... 4 Arimi: Huh? Arimi: Oh! 5 Arimi: Wait! Hey. Arimi: Miki-sa-a-an! Miki FX: --------------------------------------------------- p 61 1 Arimi: Oh no... I wonder if she took me seriously. Arimi: She's so naive, after all... 2 3 Arimi: Oh well. That's okay. 4 Miki FX: 5 narration: Staying over... narration: Those two. They've gone that far. 6 narration: How nice, Ginta. narration: Arimi-san's cute... narration: A bit headstrong, but she's a nice person... --------------------------------------------------- p 62 1 narration: But, I wonder if it's all right... narration: I wonder if Arimi-san won't change her mind again and dump Ginta. Miki: (It's none of my business, huh... That's right... Because it's their problem, right.) 2 3 narration: I can talk about anything comfortably. narration: My closest male friend... --------------------------------------------------- p 63 1 narration: He's really, truly drifting away... 2 narration: Even though it's something I've known... narration: I feel so... narration: I feel so lonely-y-y. --------------------------------------------------- p 64 1 Miki FX: 2 3 sign: Koishikawa Matsuura Ginta FX: 4 Miki: G-- Ginta...? Lying to you... --------------------------------------------------- p 65 1 Miki: Huh...? B-but... Arimi-san is going over now to stay, isn't she? You have to hurry home... Ginta: Eh? 2 Ginta: Suzuki-san's... Staying where? Miki: That's why she's at your place, Ginta... 3 4 Ginta: She said something like that?! It's a lie! It's nonsense!! 5 caption: Ginta Suou Horoscope: Aries Bloodtype: O --------------------------------------------------- p 66 1 Ginta: Okay, Miki...? Ginta: Please don't get angry and just listen to me. 2 Miki: ?! 3 Ginta: The reason that Suzuki-san and I have been so close all this time recently is... That's all an act. Ginta: There's really absolutely nothing between us. Even now, Suzuki-san likes Matsuura... So what she said about going out is a lie, too! 4 --------------------------------------------------- p 67 1 Ginta: She said it would make you jealous and turn your attention from Matsuura over to me. It's a strategy that Suzuki-san thought of... Ginta: And I only played along with that... 2 Ginta: I'M SORRY!! I'M RE-E-EALLY SORRY! Ginta FX: Ginta: FORGIVE ME!! 3 4 5 Ginta: Huh...
