Hillegas What is really important about science fiction is that in its various genres it provides an extraordinarily flexible instrument for social criticism, that it is particular able to deal with problems of life in a new age of science and technology, and that at the same time it is able to reach, because it is a kind of popular literature, a much larger audience than does most mainstream literature.
