It means that the Qur'an descended as a whole in one single time from the Preserved Tablet (al-lawh al-mahfuz) to the Nearest Heaven (al- sama' al-dunya) and then placed in the House of Glory (bayt al-`izza), after which Gabriel would descend with its diverse parts over a duration of twenty-three years. The first verse revealed from it was: "Recite in the name of thy Lord Who createth" (96:1) and the last was: "And guard yourselves against a day in which ye will be brought back to God, then every soul will be paid in full that which it hath earned, and ye will not be wronged" (2:281) - Qurtubi said it. I read in Ibn al-Subki's "Tabaqat" (Transmission-Layers of the Shafi`i scholars) on the authority of Imam Ahmad ibn Isma`il al-Qazwini that the Prophet (s) lived for seven days after this verse was revealed. Al-Rafi`i* said: "And the same Imam Ahmad died seven days after saying this." I read in Ibn Abu Jamra's commentary on Bukhari that some of the scholars said the first verses revealed were those of "Recite" while others said they were those of "The Cloaked One" ("al-Muddaththir," sura 74). What reconciles them is that "Recite" is the first revelation to descend was "Recite," while the first order to warn was "The Cloaked One".** If it is asked: "Why did he say: Arise and warn, and he did not mention the glad tidings, although the Prophet (s) is both a warner and a bringer of glad tidings?" The answer is that the glad tidings are for those who enter into the fold of submission, and at the time that this sura was revealed, no-one had yet entered Islam, and God knows best... *The chief legal authority in the late Shafi`i school, followed by Nawawi. ** "O thou enveloped in thy cloak, arise and warn! thy Lord magnify, thy raiment purify, pollution shun!" Ibn al-`Imad said: "We have sent it down on the Night of the Decree" indicates that the night is better than the day. The scholars differed in the meaning of its excelling a thousand months ("The Night of the Decree is better than a thousand months" 97:3) which adds up to 83 years and four months, or 30,000 days and 30,000 nights. Ibn `Abd al-Salam said in his "Qawa`id" (Rules): "The good deed (al-hasana) on that night is better than 30,000 good deeds on another." Ibn Mas`ud said: "It is incumbant upon the believer to intend spending it in prayer from the very first night of the month of Muharram (the first month of the year) to the end of the year, so that he will most certainly chance upon it." Nawawi said: "None is granted the benefit of its excellence except he to whom God shows its exact occurrence." Mawardi said: "And it is desirable for him who knows it, not to reveal it." The Phrase of Oneness is the key to the Garden of Paradise; "every key must have teeth,"* and its teeth are to forsake all that is forbidden and do what is ordained. God the Exalted says: "Therefore know that there is no god but God alone" (47:19) and the Prophet (s) said: "Whoever said: There is no god but God alone, taking care that it is unalloyed (mukhlisan bihi) and from the heart, enters Paradise." It was asked in what being-unalloyed (ikhlas) consisted. He said: "In barring one from what God the Exalted has declared forbidden." The Prophet (s) also said: "O Abu Hurayra! Every good deed on your part shall be weighed on the Day of rising except the Witnessing that there is no god but God alone, for verily it can never be placed in the Balance." *A saying by Wahb ibn Munabbih reported by Bukhari in the title of the first chapter of the Book of Funeral Prayers (Jana'iz). By grace of the rose The nightingale learnt the art of song; Else, within its slender bill, there could never be sung such lovely rhymes and tunes. (Hafiz, Diwan-i Hafiz, ghazal 272, v. 4) In the magazine SUFI (Issue 28, Winter 95-96, p. 22) H. Ghomeini interprets this verse in his article "Poetics and Aesthetics in the Persian Sufi Literary Tradition" as follows: "A beam of this Eternal Beauty struck the Rose, and the Rose reflected that Beauty to the Nigthingale, filling the distraught bird with melody, frenzy, and ecstasy. ... one basic message: to show how Beauty gave birth to Love and how Love generated Existence." Another interesting article about that theme is by Carl W. Ernst "The Symbolism of Birds and Flight in the Writings of Ruzbehan Baqli" (SUFI 11, Autumn 1991), Ernst gives a lot of references. The book "As through a Veil: Mystical Poetry in Islam" by A. Schimmel (1978), Chapel Hill, The University of North Carolina Press, is a very good source for someone who wants to plunge into symbolism. One take on Roses: The notion of prayer beads started in Hinduism and was retained into Buddhism (which was, after all, originally a Hindu reform movement). At the time of the Arab expansion, Afghanistan and western Persia were primarily Buddhist (!), Zoroastrianism having been long in decline. The mystics of Islam and the mystics of Buddhism of course recognized each other, and the notion of counting prayers on a string of beads made its way west. The Christians got them from the "Saracens" (Turks, mostly) during the Crusades. In Arabic, the word for "invocation of Divine Presence" (my loose translation) is WiRD and the word for "rose" is WaRD. Just a short vowell apart. The Rose symbolism thus connotes Remembrance, and the play-on-words was retained into English as: Rosary. EVIDENCE ABOUT PRAYER-BEADS IN ISLAM ------------------------------------ Arabic: masbaha, sibha, tasbih Allah says in His Holy Book to His Holy Prophet, "Remind people, for reminding benefits them." The reminder of Muslims has various forms, public and private. A public form of this reminder is the adhan. The masbaha or subha or tasbih, or rosary, or prayer-beads, has had since the earliest companions the function of a private reminder. It is for that reason that the tasbih was called by them mudhakkira, "reminder." The statement, often heard today, that counting dhikr on beads is an innovation, is mistaken. The use of beads for counting dhikr is a sunna attested by the sahih hadith of Saad ibn Abi Waqqas, who related that the Prophet, Peace be upon him, once saw a woman using some datestones or pebbles (nawan aw hasan), and did not prohibit her to use them. This hadith is found in Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nisa'i, Ibn Maja, Ibn Hibban, and Hakim. Dhahabi declared it sahih. Another sahih hadith to that effect was related by Safiyya, who was seen by the Prophet, Peace be upon him, counting "Subhan Allah" on four thousand date stones. This hadith is found in Tirmidhi, Hakim, and Tabarani, and was confirmed by Suyuti. The Indian hadith scholar Zakariyya al-Khandlawi relates in his book "Stories of the Sahaba" that Abu Hurayrah said: "I recite istighfar (formula of asking forgiveness) 12,000 times daily" and that, according to his grandson, he had a piece of thread with 1,000 knots (or 2,000) and would not go to sleep until he had said Subhan Allah (Glory to God) on all of these knots. According to her granddaughter through Imam Hussayn, Sittna Fatima also used to count her dhikr on a thread with knots. Mawlana Zakariyya continues, "It is well-known that many other companions of the Prophet, Peace be upon him, used beads in their private devotions, such as Saad ibn Abi Waqqas himself, Abu Safiah the slave of the Prophet, Abu Sa`d, Abu Darda', and Sittna Fatima, May Allah be pleased with them all. Stringing or not stringing the beads together does not make any difference." It is also well-established that counting dhikr is a sunna of the Prophet, Peace be upon him. He himself advised his wives, Sayyidna cAli, and Sittna Fatima to count tasbih (subhan Allah), tahmid (al-hamdu lillah), and takbir (Allahu akbar) thirthy-three times each before going to bed at night. Ibn `Amr relates that he saw the Prophet, Peace be upon him, count the times he said "Subhan Allah" on his hand. Imam Suyuti recounted in one of his fatwas entitled "al-minha fi al-sibha" (The Profit Derived From Using a Rosary) the story of cIkrima, who asked his teacher `Umar al-Maliki about the rosary. `Umar answered him that he had also asked his teacher Hasan al-Basri about it and was told: "Something we have used at the beginning we are not desirous to leave at the end. I love to remember Allah with my heart, my hand, and my tongue." Suyuti comments: "And how should it be otherwise, when the rosary reminds one of Allah Most High, and a person seldom sees a rosary except he remembers Allah, which is among the greatest of its benefits." The idea that the sibha comes from Buddhism or Christianity was one of the Hungarian scholar Ignaz Goldziher's (fl. 1897) legacies to orientalism. Ghomeini interprets this verse in his article "Poetics and Aesthetics in the Persian Sufi Literary Tradition" as follows: "A beam of this Eternal Beauty struck the Rose, and the Rose reflected that Beauty to the Nigthingale, filling the distraught bird with melody, frenzy, and ecstasy. ... one basic message: to show how Beauty gave birth to Love and how Love generated Existence." Another interesting article about that theme is by Carl W. Ernst "The Symbolism of Birds and Flight in the Writings of Ruzbehan Baqli" (SUFI 11, Autumn 1991), Ernst gives a lot of references. This is because when Adam fell to earth his hair grew long and his body became soiled, whereupon Gabriel came with scissors, cut his hair and nails, removed the dirt from his body, and buried everything under the ground. Then Adam slept and when he woke up he saw that God had created the palm tree by his side: its body -- that is its trunk -- was from his body, its fiber or luffa was from his hair, and its stalks were from his nails. It drinks from the top down while other trees drink from the bottom up. Our Master `Ali said -- may God be well pleased with him: "The first tree that stood on the face of the earth is the palm-tree." God the Exalted mentioned it in the Qur'an : "Tall date-palms with shoots of fruit stalks, piled one over another" (50:10).* *[Cf. 6:99, 6:141, 18:32, 19:23, 19:25, 20:71, 26:148, 54:20, 55:11, 55:68, 69:7, 80:29.] The Prophet (s) used to tell people to eat balah or green dates together with tamr or dried ripe dates** for when the sons of Adam eat them shaytan is angry and says: "The sons of Adam are eating the new together with the old!" This is because green dates are cold and dry while dried ripe ones are hot and moist, and each possesses benefits that complement those of the other. The Prophet (s) would join together cucumbers, rutab or fresh ripe dates, sha`ir or barley bread, and tamr or dry ripe dates, as well as mix cold water with honey and drink it on an empty stomach. All this makes for lasting good health, because good health endures when (foods of) hot and cold (elements) are joined. Physicians forbid eating fish together with eggs, or fish together with yogurt, and they forbid drinking honey with cold water after eating fish or before sleep, also drinking water after sexual intercourse, and entering the bath after drinking milk. Al- Samarqandi said in "al-Bustan": "Whoever enters the bath on a full stomach and becomes afflicted with colic has no-one to blame but himself." **[The various Arabic names of the date corresponding to its different stages are: tal`, khalal, balah, busr, rutab, and tamr or suyyab.] The Prophet (s) said: "Let the one who fasts break his fast with rutab or fresh ripe dates," for fasting weakens the stomach and the liver, and sugar reaches the liver fastest because it likes sugar and accepts it, especially rutab. The Prophet (s) said: "When the (time of) rutab comes, wish me well, O `A'isha." Tamr or dry ripe dates are the best food in any land. The pith of the palm (jummar) confines the stomach and helps against jaundice and fever. Adding to its benefit is the consumption of ginger preserve following it. This will be addressed later insha Allah. Finally, there is nothing better than rutab for the menstruating woman, and nothing better than honey for the sick. The Isma'ilis believe that this day was passed on through Nabi Muhammad (pbuh) through his cousin and son-in-law, and the first revealed Imam of the Shi'a sect of Islam, Ali ibn Talib. The Isma'ilis still observe the Night of Power on this day. The Isma'ilis get together on this day communally for intense dhikr and ritual prayer until sunrise the following morning. Ibn `Abbas said -- may God be well pleased with him and his father: "God the Exalted taught Gabriel a certain invocation and ordered him to teach it to the Prophet (s). Whoever says it, God will record for him 70,000 good deeds and erase from his record 70,000 bad ones, and He will raise his station 70,000 levels. This invocation is: "There is no god but God as much as all things say: There is no god but God, and as much as it is obligatory for them to say: There is no god but God, and as it befits His gracious countenance and the might of His majesty; "and all praise to God as much as all things praise Him, and as much as it is obligatory for Him to be praised, and as much as it befits His graceful countenance and the might of His majesty; "and glory to God as much as all things glorify Him, and as much as it is obligatory for Him to be glorified, and as much as it befits His graceful countenance and the might of His majesty; "and God is Greater as much as all things magnify God, and as much as it is obligatory for Him to be magnified, and as much as it befits His graceful countenance and the might of His majesty." It is related in the hadith that when a servant of God says "La ilaha illallah" an angel ascends carrying it, and another angel descending from heaven meets him, to whom the first angel asks: "From where are you coming?" whereupon the second asks: "And you, where are you going?" The first replies: "I am ascending carrying So-and-so's witnessing to take it to his Lord." The second says: "And I am descending carrying his exemption (bara'atahu) from the fire." One of Jesus' inheritors (awsiya') passed by little boys playing and stopped to play with them. Among them was the vizier's son. Later, the vizier's son took him to his house so that his father could honor him appropriately. The latter brought him some food, whereupon devils appeared. As soon as he said: "In the name of God the Beneficent, the Merciful" (bismillah al-rahman al-rahim) they fled. The vizier enquired about it and he replied: "I am one of Jesus' companions. He sent me to you so that you would believe in God alone and forswear idols." Upon hearing this the vizier submitted. Then he said: "The king's horse died today." The disciple said: "If the king should do as I say, God will return life to his horse." The vizier told the king and the latter acquiesced, whereupon the vizier brought the disciple to his court. The disciple said: "O king, hold one of the legs of the horse, let your father hold another, your son the third, and your mother the fourth, and repeat after me: LA ILAHA ILLALLAH." They did as he said. Each limb began to move in the hand of its holder, and behold! the horse jumped up and was alive again by God's permission -- Exalted is He. It is related in Ibn Sa`d's "Layers" (Tabaqat) that the Prophet (s) was asked who was meant in the saying of God the Exalted: "Those who spend their wealth in the night and the day, in secret and in the open, they have their reward with their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve" (2:274). He said: "They are the owners of horses" (used in the service of jihad). Ibn `Abbas (r) said: "In battle the horse says: Most glorified and sacntified is the Lord of the angels and the Spirit." `Umar (r) said: "Get the mares, for their bellies are a treasure and their backs a rampart." Horse meat expels gases but is not good for delicate constitutions because it is viscous and bilious (sawdawi). It is forbidden to eat according to Abu Hanifa alone... No poor-tax (zakat) is due on the horses one owns according to the majority of scholars, while Abu Hanifa declared it obligatory (wajib) if they are mares or mixed, but not if they are only males. For each of the herd on which poor-tax is due the owner must give one dinar, or else estimate their collective value and give five dirhams for every two hundred dirhams. Ka`b al-Ahbar said -- may God be well pleased with him: "There was a righteous king among the Bani Isra'il. God revealed to their Prophet: "Tell him to wish for something." He said: "I wish to strive in the way of God with my possessions and my offspring." God gave him one thousand children. He began to prepare each child for battle until that child died as a martyr, whereupon he prepared the next one, and so forth until they were all killed in a period of 1,000 months. Then the king himself entered the fray and was killed. The people said: "No-one will ever be able to attain to his merit." And (now) God revealed this sura (The Decree)." Al-Waqidi said: "It is the first sura revealed in Madina." Najm al-Din al-Nasafi, however, says: "Eighty-five suras were revealed in Mecca, the first being al-Fatiha and the last "Woe unto the Defrauders" (sura 83); and twenty-nine were revealed in Madina, the first being "al-Baqara" (sura 2) and the last "al-ma'ida" (sura 5)." Abu Bakr al-Warraq said: "Solomon's kingdom was five hundred months, and Dhu al-Qarnayn's kingdom was five hundred months, and God has made the deeds done during that night outweigh both kingdoms." I saw in "Rawd al-afkar" (The Meadows of Reflections) that one day the Prophet (s) mentioned four men who had who had worshipped God for eighty years, not disobeying him for one blink of an eye. The Companions were seized by wonder at this, whereupon Gabriel came to him and brought him this sura so that the Prophet (s) and the Companions became happy. The scholars differ concerning the designation of the Night of the Decree. Most say that it falls on the twenty-seventh of Ramadan. Whoever prays on that night four rak`at (prayer-cycles) in which he recites al-Fatiha, "Rivalry in worldly increase distracteth you" (sura 102) once, and "Say He is God: One" (sura 112) three times, Allah will make the throes of death easy for him, remove from him the punishment of the grave, and give him four pillars of light on top of each of which rest 1,000 palaces. Al-Shafi`i said -- may God be well pleased with him: "The strongest reports I have is that it falls on the twenty-first." The author of "Tanbih al-ghafilin" (Abu al-Layth al-Samarqandi, d. c983 CE) reportedly said it is not confined to the last ten nights of Ramadan, but al-Rafi`i rejected this opinion. What I did see in the "Tanbih" is that he said that the letters which form "The Night of the Decree" are nine (la-y-la-t-a-l-qa-d-r), and God mentioned it three times in the sura: 9 x 3 = 27, which is an indication that it falls on the twenty-seventh. This is also the opinion of Ibn `Abbas, who adduced the fact that God created seven heavens, seven earths, seven seas, and seven days; and that He created us from seven elements and nourished us with seven kinds of food, according to His saying (80:27-31): "And we cause the grain to grow therein" -- this is (1)wheat and (2)barley -- "and (2) grapes, and (3) reeds" -- that is, canes -- "and (4) olives and (5) dates, and garden-closes of thick foliage" -- orchards with great trees -- "and (6) fruits" -- such as figs -- "and (7) grasses" -- that is, the vegetation which animals eat. And finally, (Ibn `Abbas adduces) that He ordered us to prostrate upon hearing seven verses. All this is discussed in the chapter on trust (al-amana).
