Kaffea lalla ------------------------------ From: maarof Date: Sat, 24 Aug 1996 04:07:37 -0700 Subject: Friday tale (long) Friday tale by Abdurrahman Haqqi "CAN Rahman tell me how many surah in the Quran," ask my Quran teacher. He taught me how to read Quran during my teenage years -- years ago. I was surprised. Why did he ask? He knew I have returned from Kuwait University a few years ago, and he asked such a trivial question. So I answered: "114 surah, sir!" "Exactly, can Rahman named them?" So I recited the names of the surah: "Surah al-Fatihah, al-Baqarah, Ali Imran, an-Nisa, al-Maidah, .... and finally an-Nas". And he said: "Very good! "But can Rahman deduced from the sequence of the surah, starting from surah al-Fatihah and ends with surah an-Nas?" I couldn't answer, the question never occured to me, even though during my studies on fiqh and usul fiqh. I believed that it is God's will the way the surahs are arranged. I also believed that the Muslims can learned from what is written and unwritten in the Quran for happiness in this life and hereafter. I remembered the story of Abu Bakar cried when surah an-Nashr was revealed, even though the surah tells about the victory of the message of Islam brought by the Prophet. But to Abu Bakar, the surah tells the earthly presence of the Prophet was nearing its end. So my teacher explained the wisdom of the arrangement of the Quran for about half an hour, while smoking even though I didn't smoke. In summary, his main point is if we can find the meaning or what they mean to us -- the names of the surahs -- we can solved life problems, whether individually or in group, with analyzing every problem and their arrangement. For example, the opening surah of the Quran, surah al-Fatihah is the basic guidance for mankind. The next surah, surah al-Baqarah is the first stage in development of man because al-Baqarah means 'cow' which provide milk, which implies a state of fitrah (the state of pure nature. The next, Surah Ali Imran means 'Family of Imran' shows the importance of family for baby who needs milk. The providance of milk and family will not be complete without women, so the fourth surah -- surah an-Nisa' which means 'women'. And so on till the last surah, an-Nas which means 'man' the final purpose of man to seek protection and care in Allah from jinns and other humans. What attracted me is the order and the strategic position of 'an-Nisa' in the path for mankind as drawn by Quran. Ponder the relationship of milk (baby), family and women from the corresponding surahs. So, who is brave enough to downgrade the position and status of woman? Who is brave enough to think woman as only minor player in this life? Who thinks that man is more honourable than woman? Those who accept these views, are not following the true teaching of the Quran. Al-Quran honours the children of Adam without diffentiating gender (QS. al-Israk: 70); al-Quran stated the administration of this world is the shared duty of man and woman. Both are equally responsible (as example QS. al-Ahzab: 35-6); and al-Quran stated is is piety which raised the state of humans in front of Allah (QS. al-Hujarat: 13). In my opinion, the classical interpretation or tafsir on textual interpretation of nas-nas al-Quran and Sunnah on position of woman, according to verse 34 surah an-Nisa' will be challenged greatly in view of currently critical view of reality of life since the end of the 20th century, and in the end of 21st century, the difference between man and woman might only be by their natural biological state. The view that man is better in term of intellect, strength, creativity and bravery as written by az-Zamakhsyari (w.565H) in his kitab al-Kasysyaf (see vol. 1/523-4); or man has has complete intellect, maturity and judgement as written by Nawawi Banten (w.1319H) in kitab Mrah Labid... (1/149); and man more innovative and the provider of the family while woman only to give birth and caring children as written by Rasyid Ridha (w.1356H) in kitab al-Manar (V/69-70) will probably be set aside or no longer applied. Woman has three resposiblities, i.e the natural duty as mother and wife; resposiblity with husband's permission together as provider for family; and responsiblity toward individual achievement. The first responsiblity, to be the same as man is impossible, but who can deny that right for women's income to be above that of a man or her husband; and who can deny the right of a woman to be the best student in a university. There is truth, in what is happening in Middle East, when Wishal al-Mahdi, wife of Hassan at-Turabi, during the Muslim Women Conference, 31 July 1996 in Khartoum, Sudan said 'Because woman is thought as weak, her rights given by Allah were taken away and she is forced to stay in home'. Now, who will return her those rights? ------------------------------ From: Sipko den Boer <106254.1277@compuserve.com> Date: Sat, 24 Aug 1996 04:22:35 -0400 Subject: sharing the experience of the path " We are a group of lovers whom desire has brought from a distant place on a journey....Look down from the roof and behold with kindliness this congregation of afflicted lovers!" I remember as I passed by him, feeling the way Allah[swt] willed me to feel, that if only more Brs could be like him; sadly enuff, tho I reside in a country where abt 10% of the population is muslim, few of them reflect this; brthers especially are famous for tight tight clothes and unislamic behaviour. But I digress; as soon as I thought " if only more Brs could dress like this, it makes me so so happy to see a br dress like this" another thought struck me, namely that I have seen Brs dressed like that, and even more strictly without any effect; and following tat thought, the question" could he be a sufi?" Just my thot for the day:-) > wa 'alaikum salaam wr wb > Imaan A related issue is that of people who are atheist. I am torn about whether I should quickly change the subject with them if they bring up the issue of God or whether to wait and hear out their ideas. I am more attracted to the first but end up doing the second in most cases. And this leaves me feeling weird and low for several days. I begin to wonder if my belief in God is just a game I am playing with myself, a convenient fiction to conceal the depressing "reality" out there. I mean belief makes life so much more pleasant that I actually don't care whether it is "true" or "false". Yet my mind subconsciously tries to impose order on my thoughts and classify them as true and false. The real solution seems to me to avoid these people altogether. But how is this compatible with loving them? I mean if I ignore them I begin to feel emotions of pride and superiority. Another issue is if my faith is so weak that just a brief conversation with an atheist brings on a major moral crisis, is that not something to worry about? Still, I think it is true that the company one keeps has a big impact on one's thoughts. Just being with a person who believes refreshes the spirit, even if you talk about something completely superficial and unrelated to God and religion. Sorry about rambling. All this was triggered by an event in real life. And I needed to get this out of my system to try to stop thinking about it. My first encounter with Sh.Nazim several years ago was an eye-opener.Before that I had become a great admirer of Imam Shamil after whom my youngest is named. And I had seen a picture of Imam Shamil in the possession of a Naqshi murid in Libya And when I first saw Sh.Nazim in Jamiya and immediately and loudly said "You look like Imam Shamil " he immediately gave the candid reply without hesitation "My teacher ? Imam Shamil KAUKASI DAGESTANI" Such was the mind of Sh.Nazim always in the world of his Naqshi masters. The second time I met him was in a restaurant opposite Masjid Darul Aman i.e in the PKM building. He was eating in a humble restaurant with Jamiya people with him.I took the golden opportunity of sitting opposite him with permission of course. And his words which I have always awaited anxiously from an alim but which i had hitherto never heard " ULAMA PREACH ISLAM THROUGH THE LAW , SUFIS PREACH ISLAM THROUGH THE HEART " He always knew what to say and to the right people. It was several minutes after that when he returned to the waiting van and sat in darkness in the van , that I saw the glow in his eyes .I can still visualise those greenish eyes that lighted up but never blinked which is what I expect from people in full mental concentration on the word Allah in the heart. SH.NAZIM struggled against secularism in Turkey and went to jail for his beliefs. His support for the Bosnian people is the reason for his selection by the Muslims there to meet the Pope. His English, American , Malaysian ,European indeed cosmopolitan following attests as to his impact and popularity".A good ulama never visits princes. A good prince visits ulama." But as Rumi points out sometimes appearances belie the reality which is actually the opposite. When Sh.Nazim moved into Brunei he was able to start work to undo the occult influences of the infamous Yogi of India. As for Raja Ashman his orthodoxy and austerity is a credit to Muslims particularly in view of the notorious behaviour of some members of the royalty. The stature or station of a Sufi depends on his historical impact.Insha Allah Sh.Nazim has the charisma, the appeal ,the following , the mechanism and the baraka to do the necessary.Despite what Badiuzzaman or the other Turkish shuyukh have done it is largely confined to Turkey.Sh.Nazim's international work will create ripples as it beginning to do through books , internet, and this constant movements which is not dictated by others but because of spiritual influences as those close to him will attest.
